Januar 2008, der vom Weltsozialforum ausgerufene globale Aktionstag, wurde auf jedem Kontinent in fast 900 gleichzeitig stattfindenden Aktionen erfolgreich ausgeführt. Dies setzte ein Zeichen der Bewegungen gegen die neoliberale Globalisierung, Krieg, Patriarchat, Rassismus, Kolonialismus und Umweltkatastrophen.
Am selben Wochenende kam es auch zu Protesten gegen die Blockade im Gazastreifen und für Menschenrechte und das Ende der Besatzung Palästinas. In den USA gab es in einigen Städten Proteste, in denen Israel dazu aufgefordert wurde, die Gefangenschaft von 1,5 Millionen Palästinensern im Gazastreifen zu beenden. Unter den Demoteilnehmern waren US-Amerikaner palästinensischer Herkunft, Menschenrechtsaktivisten, jüdische Unterstützer der Rechte der Palästinenser und viele andere.
Mit der zentralen Idee “act locally, think globally”, macht das globale Netzwerk des Weltsozialforums Kämpfe auf der ganzen Welt sichtbar und bildet ein immer größer werdendes Netz für Menschen, die daran glauben, dass eine andere Welt möglich ist. Von New Orleans bis Kenia, von Pakistan bis Kolumbien, von Grönland bis Australien nahmen Menschen am globalen Aktionstag teil, mit dem ihre täglichen Erfolge präsentiert werden, wie sie Alternativen zu dieser von Unternehmen regierten Welt schaffen.

Human rights is not being met for millions of people around the world. Even in the US, racism, social divide and other forms of discrimination still lingers. In this day and age, shouldn't people be more open-minded? It is the year 2008 and people are still blinded with ignorance and intolerance.
In Australia it is much the same. People in prominent positions in society are mainly of Anglo-Celtic origin, yet they exclaim that Australia is a fair country embracing "multiculturalism". One example can be of a racist named Gareth Hall, who is a Sports Presenter on WIN Television's WIN News in Ballarat, Australia. He degraded Australians of ethnic descent just because they are different. This shows that ethnic minorities have to work 10 times harder than white Australians to get respect. Gareth Hall on the other hand most likely did not have to work hard to get where he is today. People at WIN Television did not take on account on his skills and education, but for one thing: he is white. This shows because he speaks with an uneducated, broad-Australian accent who frequently mispronounce words in front of the TV studio camera. Fair enough he has a great job, but he has no right for degrading people of other cultural backgrounds. This is one example of inequality in a so-called 'Land of opportunity'.
