Hyde Park High Schooler Defeats Discriminatory McDonald's Seating Policy Amid Arrest, Protest

The Chicago Maroon reports that a high school student at Chicago's Kenwood Academy, unwilling to tolerate a discriminatory student seating policy at a McDonald's restaurant in Hyde Park during a busy lunchtime, openly defied the policy and was placed under arrest as a result. The McDonald's on Lake Park and 52nd Street nevertheless changed its student seating policy in the wake of the arrest, but that didn't stop more than 100 students and organizers from organizing a protest which decried the policy, deeming the policy present-day segregation.
G8: Genoa: Police on Trial for Brutal Diaz Raid

The trial in Genoa Italy of almost 30 police officers accused of various offences following the brutal raid on the Genoa Social Forum and Indymedia buildings during the Genoa 2001 G8 Protests began on Wednesday 6th April.
In the raid on the Diaz school over 90 people were arrested. At least 62 people suffered injuries after police savagely beat people, some still in their sleeping bags - 31 people were taken to hospital, three of them in a critical state. Some are still receiving medical treatment.
Almost four years after the raid various high ranking police officers stand accused of fabricating evidence (eg planting molotov cocktails) and trying to cover up the responsibility for the attack. Many of the police who took part in the raid are still not identified since they wore masks and no identification numbers.
The trial is expected to resume later towards the end of the summer.Meanwhile the trial of officres accussed of torture at Bolzaneto detneion centre, were those arrested were taken, continues.
With the latest G8 Summit due in July this year in Scotland, civil liberties groups will be watching the behaviour of the authorities very closely indeed.

Clergy from all over the state of Tennessee have called on the people of Tennessee to march on the Capitol of Tennessee to call on the Governor and the Tennessee Legislator to a halt to the proposed TennCare cuts. To not allow the cutting of the 323,000 enrollee and the extreme limit in benefits that will effect hundreds of thousands more. To not allow the change in the definition of medical necessity which will in fact effect the quality of care provided to Tennessee’s Children.

Anti-War Organization Gets Visit from the SFPD

Bay Area United Against War (or B.A.U.A.W.) was visited by the SFPD on April 2nd. The police were waiting at Centro del Pueblo when BAUAW members arrived for their meeting on Saturday. The police, who claimed to have been sent by Lt. Lynch of the Richmond Police Station, asked questions such as how many people would attend the meeting and how many were expected for the upcoming "demonstration" at Washington High School. When they were told that they didn't belong at the meeting, the police officers said that they were "part of the community," so they should be allowed to be there for the public meeting. In a statement, BAUAW said, "Police Officers do not have a right to attend and ask questions at an antiwar meeting! Their presence is intimidating." Lt. Lynch, when he was confronted on Sunday, said that this statement reflected BAUAW members' negative attitude towards the police. Read More
Mayday 2001 Mass Detention Compensation Claim Fails

Nearly four years after police trapped thousands of protestors in Oxford Circus for 7 hours without access to toilets, food or water during the Mayday 2001 protests, the High Court has has rejected compensation claims that people's "right to liberty" under the European Convention on Human Rights had been breached.
The compensation claims were brough by Lois Austin and Geoffrey Saxby who were caught by the police action in surrounding thousands of protestors - their lawyer argued that detaining people for a short while might be justified in certain circumstances, but that holding people for over seven hours was illegal imprisonment.
After a two week court case, on Wednesday 23rd March, Mr Justice Tugendhat said the Metropolitan Police were "duty bound" to impose an absolute cordon to prevent violence and the risk of injury to persons and property. He said the case was about the right to liberty and public order "and not about freedom of speech or freedom of assembly", adding that if water and toilets had been provided, "they would have been used as weapons against the police by a minority of the crowd".
There are around 150 other claims by people held by the police operation which were depending on the test case outcome. The two are now set to take the case to appeal.
Civil Liberties organisations fear the judgement will encourage the police to use similar methods in the future, specifically at the G8 Summit in Scotland this July. Shami Chakrabarti, director of Liberty, said: "Today's judgment should alarm anyone who believes in the right to protest or that people should not be detained en masse like cattle."

From April 18-22, they will camp by the hundreds. UC Santa Cruz students, staff, and faculty -- not to mention dozens and dozens of community members -- will converge on the fields at the base of the campus for Tent University Santa Cruz (TUSC), which promises to be among the largest political gatherings in the recent history of UCSC.
TUSC will essentially be a creative and powerful form of resistance to the ever-growing culture of oppression of which UCSC is a part, as well as an opportunity to define and create the kind of world we wish to live in. In glaring contrast to the University of California, which is driven almost solely by economic imperatives, Tent University will function based on principles of liberty, solidarity, community, and creativity. UCSC faculty will lead their classes there, rather than in their classrooms; representatives of various community organizations and movements will hold teach-ins and workshops; and students will teach their own classes on a wide variety of subjects.
Besides operating as its own semi-autonomous university, Tent University will also be a giant cultural festival, complete with numerous local bands and cultural clubs performing. It will mark a convergence of the campus' many vibrant movements, including the ongoing workers' struggle, a walk-out to defend public education on April 20th, and resistance to the campus' continued taxing of the natural environment (and the infrastructure of the greater city of Santa Cruz) to make way for thousands of more students. The final two days of Tent U will be devoted to a series of elaborate, mass-democracy sessions, where the entire group of Tent U campers will collectively devise a platform of demands to present to the University and the State Legislature.
UCSC Students Kick Military Recruiters Off Campus

On April 5, about 300 UC Santa Cruz students led by Students Against War (SAW) kicked Army, Navy and Marine Corps recruiters out of the annual Career Center Job Fair, marking yet another success for the nation-wide counter-military recruitment campaign. (Call to Action!)
Joined by Watsonville’s Brown Berets, SAW protesters gathered for a rally at the campus bookstore and occupied the streets in a traffic-stopping procession up to the Stevenson Event Center where the Job Fair was being held. Students were motivated by fiery speeches about the racist, sexist, classist and heterosexist biases of the military, all of which are in violation of the UC Santa Cruz’s non-discrimination policies.
As the march began, a small group of students infiltrated the Job Fair and surrounded recruiter’s tables, chanting and linking arms. This small group was soon joined by more students from the march who pushed their way through front and side doors, chanting, “Whose Campus? Our Campus!” as Job Fair administrations attempted to literally shove them out the door.
Ultimately, 100 students were able to surround recruiters’ tables while the remaining 200 marchers stayed outside the Event Center, blocking the entrances and chanting in support of those on the inside.

As part of B.A.U.A.W.'s campaign to implement Proposition N, the ballot measure that S.F. voters approved last year to bring all the troops home now from Iraq, they were planning a counter-recruitment information table at a career fair at the school for Tuesday, April 5th. This is not the kind of demonstration that would require police-issued permits. BAUAW says, "The police have no right to show up at our meetings where we discuss our antiwar work. We have filed a formal complaint against the police for this intrusion on our rights and are seeking legal advice to prevent them from doing it again without good cause." Read more

Sea Shepherd & Humane Society documenting brutal seal hunts in Canada

We've all seen photos of baby harp seals; with their white coats and big dark eyes, they're quite adorable animals. Most of us have also heard of the yearly hunts that target them for their pelts, and leave their skinned bodies to rot all over the ice. This annual slaughter of hundreds of thousands of animals, subsidized by the Canadian government, is cruel, economically unnecessary and is also the largest single killing of marine animals that happens every year. An on-the-ground scientific study found that 42% of the seals were skinned while they were still alive. Babies are killed in front of their mothers. Mother seals chase after their babies as their babies' still struggling bodies are dragged away on hooks. The level of cruelty of which humans are capable is disgusting beyond words. Someone complained about one of the graphic photos of the seal hunt posted to this site. This story is about the graphic acts themselves. This year, both the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) have crews in Canada to document the hunt. Activists are prevented from approaching an active seal hunt closer than half a nautical mile without permission from the Candadian government. A permit to "observe" from no closer than 10 meters is the best one can get. Activists with and without such permits have been threatened and attacked while obeying the law, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and U.S. Coast Guard have been siding with the hunters. Jesse Morrow Mountain is on the north side of Highway 180 (designated a scenic highway by the federal, state, and county governments.) RMC proposes a one-hundred-year plan to provide for local gravel needs by mining 400 acres of the mountain to a depth of several hundred feet. Once a week, the mountain will be blasted open with dynamite to “produce the desired aggregate.” An “aggregate processing plant” (i.e., a rock crushing machine) will be built on site. There will be in excess of eighty daily round-trip deliveries by gravel truck with operations occurring approximately 315 days a year. Currently RMC has not been granted a permit to begin operations, and they have not filed an environmental impact report on the project.

4/5/2005: Thousands of nurses, firefighters, teachers, and labor activists converged outside the Ritz-Carlton hotel in San Francisco this evening to protest a Schwarzenegger fundraiser for a proposed fall special election. Protesters spilled through police lines and blockaded all four corners surrounding the hotel; several dignitaries, including George Shultz and his wife's car, were surrounded by angry crowds as they entered the fundraiser. Schwarzenegger is pushing initiatives that would curtail state worker pensions, change the way teachers are paid, and establish new fiscal controls affecting schools.

4/5/2005: Let’s begin with a few facts. RMC Pacific Materials of Pleasanton, California, is proposing to destroy half of Jesse Morrow Mountain. Jesse Morrow Mountain is on the north side of Highway 180 (designated a scenic highway by the federal, state, and county governments.) You see it when you’re on the way to Kings Canyon/Sequoia right after you take the hard left turn on 180 and head due east toward the Sierra Nevada. It’s the huge mountain just past the old schoolhouse, now a restaurant, the Sherwood Inn. The south face of the mountain looks out over Sanger and Reedley and its north face drops down to the little community of Piedra and what’s left of the Kings River.

Police Pepper Spray on Non-Violent Protestors Back in Court

After nearly eight years, two trials, a trip to the Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court, the “Pepper Spray 8” – forest activists whose eyes were swabbed with pepper spray-soaked q-tips during peaceful protests – are heading back to court for trial number three. “We’re hoping the third time’s the charm,” said Plaintiff Spring Lundberg, who was seventeen when members of the Humboldt County Sheriffs Department held her eyelids open while applying pepper spray during a sit-in at Pacific Lumber Company in protest of ancient redwood logging in Headwaters forest.
This civil rights trial will be heard again in federal court after two hold-out jurors prevented a verdict in the September 2004 trial. At issue is whether police used excessive force when they forced pepper spray into the eyes of protesters staging a sit-in. The defendants are Humboldt County Sheriffs' Dept., Eureka Police Dept., the former Sheriff and current Sheriff of that county.

Statoil and the Norwegian people will be the beneficiaries of the most generous tax deal in the world. However, serious questions are being asked as to how the oil companies have come to benefit from such an extent and as to the role that Ireland's former Energy Minister, the now disgraced Ray Burke, had in forming the oil tax deal that now pertains. CCNY Students Begin Hunger Strike to Protest Suspension of Counter-Recruiters

CCNY Faculty and students have begun a three-day hunger strike at City College to protest the arrest and suspension of students involved in a protest against military recruitment on campus. CCNY Professor Bill Crain writes: "Join Chithra KarunaKaran, Susan DiRaimo, students and me in a 3-day hunger strike in protest of the belligerent arrests and suspensions of the three students and the staff member as a result of the March 9 protest against military recruitment at CCNY. Our purpose is to draw attention to the seriousness of the repression of the right to free speech and assembly, and to call for dropping the charges." A recent hunger strike by Georgetown students was successful in bringing a "living wage" to the Georgetown campus after years of obfuscation and delay.

A March 31st Cesar Chavez celebration dinner benefit for the Davenport Resource Services Center, brought 150 mole contest tasters to Mission Church for an evening of good food, laughter, music, story telling and a film preview of “Latinos Finding their Place on the North Coast.”

On Sunday April 3, more than 1,200 people marched through the streets of Salinas and rallied at the Cesar Chavez Library. While we honored the life struggle of Cesar Chavez, we too struggle to keep the Libraries open in Salinas. Conncetions were easily made between the US government policy of endless war around the world and the closing of community resources such as the entire library system.

Your immediate action is needed to ensure safe and accurate elections in the state of Washington. The legislators must hear from all of us as soon as possible, or we may lose our chance to ensure paper ballots in Washington. ESSB 5395 requires a voter-verified paper record of each vote, makes that paper record the official record for recounts and audits, and requires an audit of the records produced by electronic voting machines. This is a good bill. It was passed unanimously by the Washington State Senate, and by the House State Government Operations and Accountability Committee. 24-Hour Read-In in Salinas Held to Protest Library Closure

Local and regional authors, poets, activists, artists, and other library supporters brought an “Emergency 24-hour “Read-In” to life in Salinas this weekend. They gathered around the Cesar Chavez Public Library, which was slated for closure along with the entire Salinas library system due to budget shortfalls. With a small tent city erected on the back lawn, and pro-library/anti-war banners hanging from the fences, the non-stop rally and read-in featured a non-stop “reading throne” near the library’s front door, a main 24-hour stage on the other side, and organization booths and information tables.
Many of the people who were in attendance repeatedly made reference to the fact that hundreds of billions have now been spent on the unjust Iraq War, and yet five million dollars cannot be found to keep the Salinas libraries open. For one speaker, Fernando Suarez, this issue went beyond simple economics when he told of how his son joined the U.S. Army and was later killed fighting in Iraq. Fernando is now a member of Gold Star Families for Peace.

Southeastern Regional Anarchist People of Color Conference Reportback

Last weekend, March 25-27, radical people of color from across the nation gathered in Asheville, North Carolina. There, at the Southeastern Regional Conference of Anarchist People of Color, we breathed a collective sigh of relief and turned that shared breath into shared struggle: personal, social, and organizational relationships; histories, hopes, and plans for social change. One of the very first questions asked in the opening discussion of the Southeast Regional was “What is anarchism?” Over the course of an hour, almost everyone present threw out their own definition, idea, or perspective on anarchism. The list of definitions began with “working to end all systems of domination” followed by “complete and total freedom, with a sense of responsibility, respect and collective effort.” Some said anarchism is simply no single, central doctrine; or simply the act of organizing outside of any institutions or system. A reoccurring definition that persisted throughout the conference was that of anarchism as self-definition and self-determination. This perspective seemed pressingly salient to the attending people of color, with the idea voiced repeatedly in many different ways, such as autonomia, zapatismo, hybridity, and recognizing/recreating who we are. In all of these definitions, many emphasized that anarchism is very importantly something we do; the actions of our lives individually and collectively.

Arkansas found themselves engulfed in a veil of thick smoke; courtesy of the U.S. Congress, the Bush Administration, and the U.S. Forest Service. Radio Free Nashville Launches After Eight Years of Labor

At 7pm on Sunday night, Radio Free Nashville flipped its switch, letting lose 100 watts of community-run audio programming to the southern section of Nashville over the 98.9 low-power FM frequency. Station founder Ginny Welsch gave a tear-filled greeting to the group of about 100 supporters, some of whom had worked with her for close to 8 years toward this goal. After a few words she choked up and couldn't continue. "This has been an 8 year birthing process," said programmer Dawn Kirk, taking the mic. "Most women take 9 months to birth something!"
