For it was exactly twenty years ago �the first Saturday of June 1984- that the then president arrived in town to accept an honorary doctorate (in laws, of all things) from University College Galway (UCG). It was an election year, and an opportune moment to pose for Irish-American voters with a parchment in one hand and pint of Guinness in the other. "Hey Ronnie Reagan, I�m black and I�m pagan, I�m gay, and I�m left, and I�m free I�m an unfundamentalist environmentalist, Don�t bother me." 'In the few days before Reagan arrived, sleepy old Galway was transformed: the town was invaded by secret servicemen with cropped hair and dark suits, who spoke into hidden microphones on their cuffs; the black Mercedes population trebled; and the unusual helicopter activity was menacingly suggestive of �Apocolypse Now�. Those of us who had friends in the vicinity of the University were unable to visit them for a few days.' For the previous eight weeks, dozens of us had gathered each Tuesday night in the Atlanta Hotel, separating into sub-committees in the several corners of the bar, and redividing into pint-drinking social groups afterwards. Nuns, republicans, Labourites, trades unionists, ex-aid workers, human rights activists, academics, young trotskyists (I was one of them), all had their different strategies and objectives, but it was a period of comradeship and excitement. During the build-up, one memorable stunt grabbed national headlines. A group of academics at UCG organised a �de-conferring ceremony� at which holders of UCG doctorates publicly burned them in protest. Among those who participated was the heroic veteran socialist republican and writer, Peadar O�Donnell, who had been awarded an honorary doctorate by UCG a short time before. In the few days before Reagan arrived, sleepy old Galway was transformed: the town was invaded by secret servicemen with cropped hair and dark suits, who spoke into hidden microphones on their cuffs; the black Mercedes population trebled; and the unusual helicopter activity was menacingly suggestive of �Apocolypse Now�. Those of us who had friends in the vicinity of the University were unable to visit them for a few days. It was a fine Saturday as several thousand marched from Fr Burke park towards the Cathedral car park �a space very near the University made available by the then bishop of Galway, Eamon Casey, who was boycotting the Reagan ceremonies himself. Suddenly, as the front of the demonstration passed the Atlanta Hotel, the heavens opened and we found ourselves in the middle of the heaviest rain our lives. We believed that the CIA was responsible for peppering the clouds from a helicopter with some substance or other �either to cause the more timid of the protesters to run for shelter, or to ensure that there would be no rain during Ronnie�s parade. Twenty years later, it�s re-election time again, and another teetotal warmongering president is coming to pose with a pint of Guinness for the Irish-American constituency. The Atlanta Hotel no longer exists, but a new generation of unfundementalist environmentalists is coming into contact with veterans of the Reagan protests in other corners of other bars. At the very least, we should spoil his photo-opportunity. Christy Moore is singing out against Bush as he sang out against Reagan twenty years ago �he is headlining the Irish Anti War Movement�s �When Bush Comes to Shove� gig in Dublin on 19 June. Vrijwel alle antifascistische demonstranten zijn gearresteerd. Getuigen verhalen op indymedia onder meer van extreem politiegeweld en sadistische en vernederende behandelingen. Alle arrestanten zijn inmiddels vrijgelaten, velen hebben een 'schikkingsvoorstel' van 100 euro gekregen. Twintig mensen schijnen beschuldigd te worden van 'zware geweldpleging'. Inmiddels echter hebben enkelen daarvan al kunnen verklaren dat ze volkomen geweldloos waren en het juist de politie was die buitensporig geweld heeft gebruikt. Ruim 300 antifascistische demonstranten zijn zaterdag 5 juni gearresteerd door de Haagse politie bij een protest tegen de neo-nazistische NVU, die verderop in de stad marcheerde. De betogers tegen het fascisme werden door een grote ME-macht ingesloten. Bij een uitbraakpoging door een deel van de demonstranten, trad de politie hard en gewelddadig op. Enkele gewonde demonstranten zijn met ambulances afgevoerd. De politie sloeg en hield ook betogers tegen op straat die niets met het relletje te maken hadden en weg wilden.

Heute beginnt in Sea Island im US-Bundesstaat Georgia der G8-Gipfel. W�hrend in den Jahren zuvor Proteste gegen die Politik der G8 blutig unterdr�ckt wurden, wurde zum diesj�hrigen G8-Treffen im gesamten Bundesstaat ab dem 24.Mai ein Ausnahmezustand ausgerufen. Demonstrationen d�rfen nur weit vom Gipfel entfernt unter harten Auflagen stattfinden. Polizei und Milit�r haben Stra�ensperren und Checkpoints errichtet, patroullieren durch die Ortschaften. Das Indymedia-Center, welches in Brunswick eingerichtet wurde, wird seit Tagen belagert..
Proteste finden dennoch statt - bereits am vergangenen Donnerstag konnte ein Vortreffen der G8 gleich zweimal gest�rt werden. Am Samstag beendeten Aktivisten einen 140-Meilen-Lauf f�r "globale Gerechtigkeit" (Fotos). In Atlanta wurde ein Teach-In veranstaltet. In San Francisco, wo seit dem 3.6. ein Bio-Tech-Gipfel stattfindet, richteten sich einige Demonstrationen auch gegen den G8-Gipfel.
Zus�tzlich zu den Demonstrationsverboten wird das Konzept des Embedded Journalist angewandt: W�hrend in San Francisco "nur" unabh�ngigen Journalisten der Zutritt zum Gipfel untersagt ist, d�rfen in Georgia Journalisten generell nur bis ins 60 Meilen entfernte Savannah vordringen. Mai machten die Greenkids mit einer Aktion in Magdeburg auf den Zusammenhang von Tabak und Kriegen, aber auch die Umweltzerst�rung f�r den Tabakanbau auferksam. Neuer Schwerpunkt: Tierversuche f�r die Tabakindustrie
Nur wenige Tage zuvor blockierten AktivistInnen von Rettet den Regenwald e.V. und von "Rauchzeichen! - Kampagne gegen Ausbeutung und Umweltzerst�rung durch Tabakkonzerne" die fr�here Reemtsma-Zentrale in Hamburg und forderten eine Offenlegung der Bezugsquellen des Reemtsma-Tabaks sowie die Verbesserung der Situation der B�uerInnen und Umweltbedingungen. Sp�ter wurde einem Reemtsma-Vertreter ein Negativ-Preis f�r Umweltzerst�rung und Ausbeutung �berreicht.
Am Nachmittag des 28. Mai fand ebenfalls in Hamburg ein Stra�entheater statt: Miombo-B�ume (bzw. solcherart verkleidete AktivistInnen) "starben" in der N�he von RaucherInnen und eine Begleitperson kl�rte �ber die Zerst�rung des Miombo-Urwalds in Afrika auf.

Los d��as 8 y 9 de junio se llevar�� a cabo en Buenos Aires el juicio a Josu Lariz Iriondo, detenido en esta ciudad a la espera de la resoluci��n de la Justicia argentina sobre la petici��n de extradici��n del gobierno espa��ol. El juez de su causa, Claudio Bonad��o, ha manifestado p��blicamente que se inclina por la extradici��n y, como si esto fuera poco, hasta ahora no ha aceptado otra prueba de la defensa que el informe del Relator para la Tortura de la ONU. Entre las pruebas rechazadas por Bonad��o se encuentran el informe de SERPAJ-Uruguay referente al caso, la carta de Mikel Alberdi (preso condenado a diecisiete a��os por el atentado del que se acusa a Josu) deslindando cualquier responsabilidad de Josu, y el sumario de la Justicia espa��ola referente a dicho atentado (que en ning��n momento menciona a Josu). Despu��s de una fuerte campa��a internacional el juez Bonad��o acept�� en el juicio el testimonio de cuatro ciudadanos argentinos, entre ellos el premio Nobel de la paz Adolfo P��rez Esquivel. En caso de que Bonad��o acepte la petici��n de extradici��n, la defensa apelar�� ante la Suprema Corte de Justicia; luego de este fallo, ser�� el gobierno argentino quien tenga la ��ltima palabra. La solidaridad es la ternura de los pueblos, palabras de Neruda citadas por Juanita, la esposa de Josu, en su carta abierta. Cada d��a llegan nuevas muestras de esta ternura: en Internet se recogen adhesiones a una petici��n por la libertad de este ciudadano, y varias organizaciones solicitan su asilo pol��tico. Im Fr�hjahr 2004 haben sich in Berlin verschiedene antirassistische und antifaschistische Gruppen, Organisationen und Einzelpersonen zusammengefunden und eine Kampagne gegen die NPD-Zentrale in der K�penick und den Abschiebeknast in Gr�nau ins Leben gerufen. Seitdem gab es verschiedene thematische Veranstaltungen hierzu und am 6. Juni 2004 soll eine Demonstration die Anliegen der Kampagne �ffentlich machen.

In einem Gerichtsverfahren, das auf Anordnung der Regierungsbeh�rden �ber Wochen komplett geheim gehalten werden musste, gelang es der US-B�rgerrechtsorganisation "American Civil Liberties Union" (ACLU) jetzt erstmals genauer darzulegen, wie das FBI auf private Daten, die bei amerikanischen Providern gespeichert sind zugreift. Erschreckend dabei ist, dass die Geheimdienste dank des "Patriot Act" (vom Okt. 2001) dabei keinerlei demokratischer Kontrolle mehr unterliegen. Da die betroffenen Provider �ber Abh�rma�nahmen keinerlei Auskunft geben d�rfen, ist Umfang der �berwachung durch niemand au�erhalb der Geheimdienste abzusch�tzen. Was aber immer klarer wird, ist das die Beh�rden ihre Zugriffsm�glichkeiten nicht, wie im "Patriot Act" vorgesehen, exklusiv f�r die Jagd nach Terroristen einsetzen, sondern zus�tzlich systematisch Daten von regierungskritischen Gruppen und Einzelpersonen aussp�hen.

Police, followed by private guards, arrived at the site of the tree sit in the Red Hill Valley yesterday afternoon (June 1, 2004), forcing supporters on the ground to leave rather than be arrested. Blasting is scheduled to begin soon to cut an 80 metre wide swath through the face of the escarpment to make way for the controversial Red Hill Creek Expressway. In the early hours of Sunday, the protesters entered the area and managed to scale the trees and erect sturdy platforms without being detected by private guards posted less than 100 metres away. Those occupying the trees in a small wooded area just west of Mount Albion Road intend to stay for an extended period of time, up to "several months" they claim, in order to prevent irreparable damage to the escarpment face.

Medford, Ore. - Local community activists joined Greenpeace today for the launch of its first U.S. Forest Rescue Station, at the site of the proposed Kelsey Whiskey timber sale, located in the Klamath-Siskiyou region of southern Oregon. The mobile Station, which is open to the public for workshops, hikes and other educational activities, is a hub for Greenpeace's campaign calling for greater protection and restoration of forests on U.S. public lands, and a moratorium on commercial logging.

Men ontkomt er niet aan. Nederland is voor de 2de helft van het jaar voorzitter van de Europese Unie. Tel daar nog de Europese verkiezingen van 10 juni bij op en het feest is compleet. Rondom beide thema's is al veel te doen.
Zo wordt er gewerkt aan protesten tegen verschillende toppen In Maastricht wordt rondom het thema milieu al gewerkt aan een Climate Action Summer School. Ook is er 5 juni een heus festival rondom de kritiek op de Europese Unie in Leiden. Op 26 juni is er de PLEUROParade in Utrecht waar gedanst en geprotesteerd wordt tegen de EU. Op 10 juni zijn ook de EU verkiezingen. Hierop is al aardig wat kritiek gekomen. Ook op deze kritiek wordt ingegaan. Vooral de manier waarop de verkiezingen gepromoot worden door verschillende politiek organisaties valt niet bij iedereen even goed. Wij zullen u de excessen niet onthouden.
