GEORGIA, US: Anti-G8
Anti-G8 Protests in US, Small but Lively10 Jun 2004 17:40 GMT
The G8 protests in San Francisco began on Saturday, when several hundred people started an anti-G8 breakaway march from the local ANSWER war protest. The masked group made their way up the Embarcadero, a top attraction for tourists and a main street which runs along the northern coast of San Francisco. Weaving on and off the sidewalk, through parks, and into tourist areas to dodge the police, the group eventually came back to the ANSWER rally for a tense stand-off with the police. On Tuesday, SF Reclaim the Streets had called for a mutant-themed anti-G8 RTS action in San Francisco. The sound system and costumed mutants gathered at UN Plaza, threw a stationary street party and then took to Market Street. Within a few blocks, however, a sizeable portion of the mass was encircled by SF Police, California Highway Patrol and Federal Protective Services. Officers reportedly offered the corralled demonstrators a chance to be either "cited and released" or arrested -- although when a Freak Radio Santa Cruz correspondent attempted to leave the encirclement, he was beaten by police. Police ended up making around 165 arrests at 5th and Market Streets. Meanwhile, police attacked and beat with sticks a number of protesters, bystanders and a homeless man outside the encirclement. Several protesters were grabbed off the sidewalk and arrested for no reason at all, including several who had been photographing police violence. |
Has Homeland Security Killed the Global Justice Movement?
Tennessee IMC Reports on the G8 10.Jun.2004 19:00
The annual meeting of the G8 has come to Sea Island Georgia this week and the global justice movement was barely there. Thousands of activists intimidated by a Miami II Homeland Security Force and reports of a state of Martial Law in Brunswick Georgia failed to come to the global justice convergence. Reports of Humvees pointing machine guns at protesters and planned arbitrary detention of activists for thirty days without charges flooded IMC networks in the weeks before the gathering.

Prisoners of a War

Last I checked 14 people were still being held right here in Georgia for the protests on Group of 8 Summit. One of those is unfortunately my best friend of the world, and he as apparently been before a judge once already. Here's some interesting information that has probably been mentioned or is well known enough: Before the G-8, 2000 body bags were shipped to Brunswick in preperation for violent portests. Also, a small park (commonly occupied by children in the area) was fenced in to serve as an extension to the Glynn County Detention Center.
It all makes me rather sick. I can't contact my friend because no incoming calls or messages to detainees are permitted. He's tried to call me, but I've missed every single one of these calls. If anyone has any clue when the "State of Emergency" in Brunswick ends, could you please send it to the email provided?
