On Thursday, July 15, 2004 at 1500 hours two American Viet Nam Veterans, Dave Blalock and Darnell Summers will be holding a Press Conference outside the Gates of the US Army’s 5th Corps Headquarters, Campbell Barracks, in Heidelberg. Both will speak out about the Injustices and Crimes that they witnessed while on active duty in the US Army. They will also announce the launching of a campaign to broadly distribute, throughout the US Armed Forces based in Europe, the “Call for Sisters and Brothers in the Armed Forces to Resist … Refuse to torture prisoners… Refuse to obey illegal orders… Refuse to commit atrocities against an innocent population…”

Dave Blalock and Darnell S. Summers are members of the Vietnam Veterans Against the War (AI) and the Stop The War Brigade. Both were prisoners in the US Army’s penal system. Blalock was imprisoned in the Fort Jackson stockade before being sent to Viet Nam. Summers was a prisoner at the infamous military prison in Long Binh, Vietnam known as "LBJ" or the Long Binh Jail. Dave and Darnell will give first-hand testimony about the horrible conditions and brutal treatment of both American and Vietnamese prisoners at the hands of the US Military. They will also speak about the wave of violent prison uprisings that swept through the military in the late 60s and early 70s.

“This does not represent the America I know,” said U.S. President George W. Bush in May following the release of the Abu Ghraib prison torture photos.

“Torture & Murder are endemic to the US Justice System!” Vietnam veteran Darnell S. Summers said in an interview with EL Pais in June.

“From My Lai and the Long Binh Jail to Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib the whole world knows who the real torturer’s are!”, Dave Blalock at a planning meeting in June.

NOTE: President Bush will not be at this press conference!  Instead Dave Carson, Gulf War veteran, a representative from the Military Counseling Network will be present to talk about the important assistance they provide to many GI's based both here in Germany and in Iraq who are looking for a way out of their intolerable situation. Other Anti-War/Peace organizations will also be represented.

Below are brief biographical sketches of two of the speakers:

Dave Blalock volunteered for the US Army and served from 1968 to 1971. After being AWOL for nine days in basic training he was court-martialed and spent one month out of a possible six-month prison term doing “Hard Labor” time in the Fort Jackson stockade. He then spent one year in Vietnam (1969-1970) where he became politicized by his experiences there.

After returning, he spent his last 15 months in the army by joining the large anti war movement that had existed within the US military and actively worked inside one of the many underground GI organizations. In 1989 Blalock, along with three other people burned American flags on the steps of the US Capital building in protest against the new Flag Protection Act of 1989. They were arrested for this and their case ended up in the Supreme Court, which ruled the law un-constitutional. From Vietnam, to the 1980’s counter-insurgency wars in Central America, to the ‘91 Gulf War, to the ’99 Kosovar war, to 2001 bombing of Afghanistan, to the present war on Iraq he has been active in the fight to expose and oppose all US war moves around the world. He puts special emphasis on building support for the GI anti war resisters inside the armed forces. At present, Blalock is also writing a book that tells his life story through the Vietnam War.

Darnell Summers volunteered for the US Army and served from 1966 to 1970. While home on leave before going to Vietnam in 1968 he became involved in the struggle to found the "Malcolm X Cultural Center (MXCC) in Inkster Michigan, a suburb of Detroit and was one of  the spokespersons for the "MXCC". Because of his political activities he was later targeted by COINTELPRO and arrested in Viet Nam. He was then brought back to the United States and ultimately charged with the murder of a Michigan State Police "Red Squad" Detective Sergeant, Robert Gonser, who was allegedly shot by Summers while he was home on leave. The charges were dropped in 1969 due to the statement of the Prosecutors "State" witness, Milford Scott, who wrote a letter to the presiding Judge stating that the police had scripted his testimony and that he knew nothing about the events in question. This was one year after the Detroit Rebellion, which saw 43 people killed, and thousands arrested. Then again in February 1982 Summers was arrested here in Germany and charged again with the Gonser murder based on the same evidence and illegally extradited to the US. Then in 1984 after the State refused to release sensitive surveillance documents (From the FBI, CIA, NSA, ASA, DOD, etc.) the charges were suddenly dropped with the stipulation that given new evidence the charges would be re-instated. Darnell S. Summers remains the only suspect and under U.S. statutes he can be arrested at any time. As a Black man inside the Army he was confronted by not only by racism but also the fact that he was in a military organization that was murdering people across the globe. Since then Summers has been active in the struggles against racism and U.S. instigated aggression. He was instrumental in organizing the "STOP THE WAR BRIGADE" in Germany during the Gulf war to build support for anti-war GIs.

Blalock war in Ft. Jackson bevor er nach Viet Nam geschickt wurde und Summers war in Long Binh, Viet Nam inhaftiert.
Beide werden aus erster Hand über die schreklichen zustände und die brutale behandlung von beiden, Vietnamesischen und armerikanischen Gefangenen berichten. Sie werden auch über die gewaltsamen Aufstände in den military gefängnisen ende der sechziger und anfang der siebziger Jahre berichten.

Präsident Bush wird nicht an der Presse Konferenz teilnehmen. Statt dessen wird der Golf Kriegs Veteran, Dave Carson, ein Repräsentant des “Military Counseling Network” anwesend sein. Hier bei wird er darüber informieren wie man den Soldaten in Deutschland, sowie auch in Irak, helfen kann, um einen Weg zu finden, wie sie aus ihrer jetztigen furchtbaren Lage heraus finden können.

Dave Blalock trat freiwillig der US Armee bei und diente von 1968 bis 1971. Er war ein Jahr in Vietnam (1969-1970), wo er durch seine Erfahrungen politisiert wurde.

Er schloss sich der großen Anti-Kriegsbewegung, die zur dieser Zeit innerhalb des US-Militärs existierte, an und arbeitete aktiv in einer der vielen GI- Untergrund-organisationen mit. Im Jahr 1989 verbrannte er zusammen mit drei anderen eine amerikanische Flagge auf den Stufen des Kapitols aus Protest gegen das neue Gesetz zum Schutz der Flagge. Sie wurden verhaftet und der Fall kam vor den Bundesgerichtshof, welcher dieses Gesetz für verfassungswidrig erklärte. Von Vietnam, nach Zentralamerika, über Irak und Jugoslawien bis zur aktuellen Bombadierung von Afghanistan war er aktiv an der Aufdeckung und dem Kampf gegen alle US-Kriegshandlungen in der Welt beteiligt. Er legt seinen Schwerpunkt auf die Unterstützung der Antikriegsbewegung der GI's innerhalb der Streitkräfte.

Darnell Stephen Summers trat freiwillig der US Armee bei und diente von 1966 bis 1970. Während seines Heimaturlaubs vor der Verlegung nach Vietnam im August '68, beteiligte er sich an dem Kampf um die Gründung des "Malcolm X Cultural Centers" (MXCC) in Inkster, Michigan, ein Vorort von Detroit. Er war einer der Sprecher des Centers und wurde später  eine Zielscheibe des COINTELPRO und wurde daraufhin in Vietnam wegen seines politischen Engagements verhaftet, in die USA zurückgebracht und schließlich  des Mordes an Michigan State Police "Red Squad" Detective Sergeant Robert Gonser angeklagt. Angeblich war er von Summers während seines Heimaturlaubs erschossen worden . 1969 wurde das Verfahren eingestellt, weil der "Kronzeuge" Milford Scott einen Brief an den Richter geschrieben hatte, indem er erklärte, dass die Polizei das Manuskript für seine Zeugenaussage geschrieben hat und er nichts über die in Frage stehenden Ereignisse weiß.

Zwischen 1979 und 1981 ist Darnell mehrmals als Unterstützer  von ‚FighT bAck, die Revolutionäre Stimme von G.I’.s in Europa, in und vor den US-Kasernen aufgetreten und rief die Soldaten dazu auf, die Kriegsvorbereitungen der USA gegen den Iran nicht zu unterstützen.  Er wurde dann im Februar 1982  hier in Deutschland verhaftet und mit genau den gleichen Beweisen nochmals des Gonser Mordes angeklagt. Er wurde 1982 auf Anforderung des damaligen Außenministers Haig höchstpersönlich, an die USA ausgeliefert, obwohl das ganze Verfahren gegen das Gesetz und den Auslieferungsvertrag verstieß. Nachdem der Staat sich geweigert hatte sensible Überwachungsdokumente (FBI, CIA, NSA, ASA, DOD, etc.) herauszugeben, wurde die Anklage plötzlich wieder fallengelassen mit der Bedingung, dass der Fall wieder neu aufgerollt würde falls neue Beweise auftauchen sollten. Darnell S. Summers bleibt jedoch der einzige Verdächtige und nach US-Recht kann er jederzeit wieder verhaftet werden.

Als schwarzer Mann in der Armee war er nicht nur mit Rassismus konfrontiert sondern auch mit der Tatsache, dass er in einer militärischen Organisation war, die in der ganzen Welt Massenmorde beging. Seither war Darnell S.Summers aktiv im Kampf gegen Rassismus und gegen die US-Aggressionen. Er war während des Golfkrieges wesentlich an der Organisierung der " STOP THE WAR BRIGADE " in Deutschland  beteiligt, um die Unterstützung der Antikriegs GI's aufzubauen.
