Tuesday 17th May: International Day Against Homophobia.

The International Day Against Homophobia "will articulate action and reflection in order to struggle against all physical, moral, or symbolic violence related to sexual orientation or to gender identity. It intends to inspire, support, and coordinate all initiatives contributing to the equality among citizens in right, as well as in fact, and to achieve this in all countries where action is possible.

What is Homophobia? | The Fear Behind The Hatred | The Emotional Origin of Homophobia | Sexual Prejudice - Understanding Homophobia and Heterosexism | Towards an international recognition of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, and Trans People

According to opinion widely held, homosexuality is said to be freer today than ever before. For the slightly more attentive observer, the situation is globally very different.

Despite homosexuality's apparent visibilty [in the street, in the newspapers, on television, at the movies, recent legislative advances made in many countries for the recognition of same sex couples], the more attentive observer notes that the situation is globally very different. Indeed the 20th century was the most violently homophobic period of history: deportation to concentration camps under the Nazi regime, Soviet gulags, blackmail and persecution in the United States in the McCarthy era... Homosexuality is discriminated against everywhere: in at least 80 countries, homosexual acts are forbidden by law in many countries, the punishment can exceed ten years in prison; sometimes, the law prescribes life imprisonment. And in a dozen countries, capital punishment may be actually carried out. In Africa, recently, several presidents have brutally acted on their will to combat personally this "scourge" which they consider "anti-African". Even in other countries where homosexuality is not considered a crime, persecutions have multiplied. In Brazil, for example, death squads and skin heads spread terror: 1,960 homophobic murders have been officially reported between 1980 and 2000. In these conditions, it is difficult to think that "tolerance" is gaining ground. So, homophobia appears more violent today than ever before.

Your Title

Me again 17.May.2005 05:50

I haven't commented in a Long time seems like. Well, in your main Homepage Title heading you comment that you are against moral violence. I've never heard of such a thing! Does that mean that we who have morals that do not agree with the Behavior of the homosexual life are practising moral violence? If thats the case that is Absurb!! I Respect Homosexual People for who they are and think that they are the Most Nicest Human Beings that have ever graced this Planet. But when I was a child, I grew up in a Family of a man and a woman and I was sent to Sunday School and a little later I went to church for awhile and the pastor talked about homosexuality but never in a rude way. But ever since I 1st heard about the Homosexual life styles, I have Never liked it. It really goes against all of the straight ways of the man and woman unions, I felt and I've never liked it and I Never will!! I've only been treated rude by 1 homosexual once in my entire Life, but I can't say enough about the Respect I have for them. They have shown me nothing but Kindness!! If I had my way, most of my friends would be homosexuals. I know of a group of guys & women that show they are homosexuals, but there Not a True Homosexual(I respect your choices) - because they are Devients, Obnoxious & VERY Sick people and had the misfortune of knowing what kind of people they Really are.!! They Really shame your way of Life.
The Very Best to all of you!

Explanations and generalizations

Ben Nasty 17.May.2005 13:19

Moral violence (IMHO) is violence in the name of morals. Example: beating up, threatening or harrassing someone and believing it to be ok because that person is gay and morally wrong.

While I appreciate the views of hte above poster, I have to question their view point. They make large assumptions about who is gay and who is not. An example would be where they said that they had opnly been treated rudely by one homosexual person. While I appreciate the comment that homosexuals are nice people, it still re-enforces a stereotype that you can lump a group of people together by their sexuality. Did the above poster just assume that all the people that are rude on a daily basis are straight? Did they get out of the car and check the sexuality of every person that cuts you off on the highway?

My point is that even a positive stereotype can be harmful because it encourages people to think about homosexuals as "them" or "those people". My belief is that people should be seen as individuals, even when they are joined together under a common cause. Just as the gay community can not represent all the desires and choices of any one homosexual, no one homosexual can represent the entire gay community.

So please, the next time people ask you how you feel about homosexuals or gay rights, don't make generalizations about a huge community. Speak of how you feel about those homosexuals that you know. Then when it comes to the rights of the community as a whole, giving them what you would expect for yourself or any other community of individuals would be a very respectful thing to do.

The once a year Queer symapthy space from Indymedia

Backburner 18.May.2005 20:03

Women's issues, queer folks, and peoplke of color issues issues have been on the back page at Indymedia forever. INC has stayed true to it's white boy machismo anti-globalization format. Congrats. Issue news that isn't under the tight scrutiny of a local IMC never makes the front page and alls white with the world of struggle. You've got more coverage of Italy than East St Louis. Indymedia when will people of color, queers, and feminists have a space dedicated to those issues.
and no Ward Churchill is not a piece on people of color or the life the majority of indians live. They aren't college profs, thet don't live in Boulder, and no one cares how they feel about Sept 11th.

hey backburner

indy volunteer 19.May.2005 15:28

hi backburner, i think you are right. there are not enough stories on indymedia relating to the issues you have stated. however, you are wrong about that being 'indymedia's' fault. see, this site is a global site, that is why there are more stories from italy than east st louis.

the site is based on open publishing as all indymedia sites are, so the stories that come to this 'global' site arent necessarily culled from the local sites, but are original submissions from writers just like yourself.

you are shooting yourself in the foot when you blame an open publishing resource for not having the stories that you want to read. it is your responsibility to the movement that these stories get mentioned and put in a place where more folks can see the problems.

also it helps little to whine, but helps immensely to act.

Solidarity with Back burner.

When IMC took open publishing off the front page it gave sophisticated IMC locals (mostly white) control over the front page. The software and tech startup knowledge (in the hands and expertise of people who are mostly white) is hard to come by in many less educated communities. IMC killed itself when it took open publishing away from the front page. The hits have gone down and so has use. Furthermore as a person of color I have personally found the local IMC's in close proximity to where I have lived to be white dominated, disconnected form the grassroots poor community, and elitist. Not one IMC should be allowed to move one step without proportional representation from the minority or people of color in the community. It should be predicated on leadership from the feminist and queer community as well. The hurdle should either be higher or lower for sttrarting an IMC. For instance you have a chicago IMC. Why can't there also be a Southside Chicago IMC? A Bronx IMC, A little Havana IMC,etc...
The way it stands now a handful of "radical" upper to middle class white boys set the table that no one wants to sit at.

No Such Thing as Homophobia

Keep those Values in the West ( Destroy Your Own Societies) 23.May.2005 05:21

There is no such thing as homophobia. There is a natural reaction to the mental illness of homosexual behavior and it is negative and justified; the ones who practice homosexuality are homeopathic. The problem with the Western Pro-Palestine activists is they want to spread their decadent cultural values in the Muslim and Arab World.
