Jumping the Fence of Death
Jumping the walls that separate Morocco from the colonial enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla has long been a way to enter Europe from Africa. Security forces have begun firing upon migrants attempting to cross. In response, the European Caravan against the Fence of death will protest at Ceuta on the 4th, 5th and 6th of November.
"In various places in Europe, there have been gatherings and protests, to say "enough!": enough assassinations, enough murderous deportations, enough blows and annoyances, enough investment in the militarisation of the frontier. We, social groups and self-organised spaces, independent media activists, European citizens born here and there, neighbourhood associations, assemblies and migrant forums from difference places within Europe, have decided to join together in a caravan to the wall at Ceuta, so that our "Enough!" is heard loudly.
We go towards the barricades that are the place of a crime perpetrated in the name of European democracies. We go towards the barricades that are the symbol of a border regime made not only of physical barriers and more and more militarized surveillance zones but also a system of access rights that creates "first class" and "second class" citizens (as well as "non-citizens"), leading to a veritable apartheid both in labour and in social life, making precarious the conditions of life and work and spreading fear about 'the Other'.
We invite everyone, men and women from different European cities, to join us in this journey, because today more than ever, in the face of the cruelty, against the proliferation of barriers and the inclusion/exclusion system that really exists in Europe, being part of human society means saying "enough" to the fence of death and to everything it symbolizes: not in our name! And it also means an alliance with those trying to cross that wall, defending their right to existence that is also our right... in a better world."
