IN BRAD'S MEMORY

The New York City Independent Media Center responds to the death of Brad WILL

Brad Will was killed on October 27, 2006, in Oaxaca, Mexico, while working as a journalist for the global Indymedia network. He was shot in the torso while documenting an armed, paramilitary assault on the Popular Assembly of the People of Oaxaca, a fusion of striking local teachers and other community organizations demanding democracy in Mexico.

The members of the New York City Independent Media Center mourn the loss of this inspiring colleague and friend. We want to thank everyone who has sent condolences to our office and posted remembrances to www.nyc.indymedia.org. We share our grief with the people of our city and beyond who lived, worked, and struggled with Brad over the course of his dynamic but short life. We can only imagine the pain of the people of Oaxaca who have lost seven of their neighbors to this fight, including Emilio Alonso Fabian, a teacher, and who now face an invasion by federal troops.

All we want in compensation for his death is the only thing Brad ever wanted to see in this world: justice.

  • We, along with all of Brad's friends, reject the use of further state-sponsored violence in Oaxaca.
  • The New York City Independent Media Center supports the demand of Reporters Without Borders for a full and complete investigation by Mexican authorities into Oaxaca State Governor Ulises Ruiz Ortiz's continued use of plain-clothed municipal police as a political paramilitary force. The arrest of his assailants is not enough.
  • The NYC IMC also supports the call of Zapatista Subcomandante Insurgente Marcos "to compañeros and compañeras in other countries to unite and to demand justice for this dead compañero." Marcos issued this call "especially to all of the alternative media, and free media here in Mexico and in all the world."

Indymedia was born from the Zapatista vision of a global network of alternative communication against neoliberalism and for humanity. To believe in Indymedia is to believe that journalism is either in the service of justice or it is a cause of injustice. We speak and listen, resist and struggle. In that spirit, Brad Will was both a journalist and a human rights activist.

He was a part of this movement of independent journalists who go where the corporate media do not or stay long after they are gone. Perhaps Brad's death would have been prevented if Mexican, international, and US media corporations had told the story of the Oaxacan people. Then those of us who live in comfort would not only be learning now about this 5 month old strike, or about this 500 year old struggle. And then Brad might not have felt the need to face down those assassins in Oaxaca holding merely the ineffective shields of his US passport and prensa extranjera badge. Then Brad would not have joined the fast-growing list of journalists killed in action, or the much longer list of those killed in recent years by troops defending entrenched, unjust power in Latin America.

Still, those of us who knew Brad know that his work would never have been completed. From the community gardens of the Lower East Side to the Movimento Sem Terra encampments of Brazil, he would have continued to travel to where the people who make this world a beautiful place are resisting those who would cause it further death and destruction. Now, in his memory, we will all travel those roads. We are the network, all of us who speak and listen, all of us who resist.

Those of us who do not love the APPO

Leonabrook 29.Oct.2006 23:42

Greetings,

As an immigrant in Mexico for 30 years and resident of this wonderful region of Oaxaca, I would like to comment on recent happenings.

It is sorrowful to hear of the death of Brad Will during his coverage of the conflict in Oaxaca. The loss of a young and vibrant person is always a tremendous tragedy, and I communicate my condolences to his family, friends and co-workers.

The conflict we have lived with during five months is a frightening thing. When a group of armed individuals take over a city and force it to its knees, the civilian population is helpless. We have seen businesses close, people loose their jobs, our beautiful touristic city has been strangled. The streets in the center are a disgusting focus of filth and destruction, thanks to APPO and the SNTE. (Graffiti – “Ulises take rat poison” “Death to Ulises”, dirty beds and old sofas in front of the post office, garbage everywhere, lovely old wrought-iron balconies ripped from 17th century buildings, public buses stolen and vandalized, barbed wire, tin sheeting, smoldering fires. )

Mexico enjoys a democracy which we have seen blossom over the past 20 years. This country has a history of being ruled, always, by repressive groups – beginning with the indigenous tribes, most memorably the Aztecs, then the Catholic Church, the Spaniards, the dictatorship of Porfirio Diaz, the 72 year reign of the PRI, and as we speak the “casiques” in the non-urban areas. Finally, 10 years ago our mayor was elected from the PAN, then our president, and our following mayor from an alliance of other political parties. Of course most other states and cities enjoy political pluralism. The population begins to believe in the democratic process and the strength of suffrage. What right have these people to question who sits in the governor’s office? Did they even bother to vote?

Mexico has laws, a constitution, it is a vibrant well-functioning country. That there are injustices and poverty, corruption, nepotism, tell me, what country doesn’t suffer from them? The human soul has a larcenous side. But to celebrate a group of ruffians and thugs, who stalk the streets armed with sticks and machetes, burning tires at night and threatening the safety of the populace, after the progress that is being made in our “third-world country,” is not acceptable. This is terrorism in a very real form. That a group of people who import professional agitators and pay rural bumpkins by the day to terrorize us by night, that they have the right to demand the removal of a legally-elected official, who was ratified a few weeks ago by the senate of the land, is to deny the populace their voice. It is to trample the legal system and the bases of society.

On your website you say “we speak and listen”. I wonder if you have listened to the thousands of people who love this city, respect its laws, and mourn the loss of the world we support and participate in. We have been, quietly among ourselves because we are afraid of the hoodlums and goons, hoping for our federal government to intervene in the rape of our rights. You also talk about people who make this world a beautiful place. Oaxaca was a beautiful place, but Indymedia wasn’t interested until the APPO ignored legitimate channels in our democracy. You say you imagine the pain of the people of Oaxaca who “face an invasion by federal troops”. We who are not felons and outlaws, kidnappers and terrorists, welcome it.

The idealism of Brad Will and the others of Indymedia is a wonderful thing. Revolution, death, destruction, disregard for the rights of the population are hideous and hateful. Maybe you should concentrate on Cuba or Africa where real repression and corruption are. You say you “create … passionate tellings of truth”. The whole truth, or just 50%?

Paz,

Leonabrook
Oaxaca, Oax.

p.s. Please don’t show this letter to anyone in the APPO. I’m afraid they would murder me. Or tie me up in the Zocalo with a hood over my head as they did to folks at the beginning of their reign of terror.

p.s.s. There was a “march for peace” today. Will you cover it?

Response to Leonabrook

If you really live in Oaxaca, as you say, comparing the APPO and its sympathizers to "terrorists" is simply misinformation. More than a hundred thousand of inhabitants of Oaxaca have peacefully, in several occasions, shown their support to the APPO (size of demonstrations never seen before in Oaxaca). The APPO has always called for peaceful actions. The APPO has never killed anybody (it was accused once to do so, but never proven). In contrast, Ulises Ruiz, the "elected-official of a democracy", as you say, is clearly a murderer. The people who have died in the past days, including Brad Will, were shot by known members of the PRI. The PRI has governed, and continues to govern in Oaxaca (in case you forgot), with corruption and repression in a sea of misery, and now with the complicity of the PAN. If you really love Oaxaca, you would at least acknowledge the legitimate demands of its teachers, and how the response to those demands has been violence (repression in June), and denial from the federal government. Even with the invasion of the city with the federal police, ordered by Fox, the APPO has shown restrain by calling to peaceful resistance.

Mexico is changing. The poor, the majority, are raising their voice, and so far by peaceful means. Another proof is the millions who marched in Mexico City in July (never seen before either). You better try to understand them, to connect with them, if you really love their country. The journalists of Indymedia are interested in reporting the reality from below, from the perspective of the oppressed. They don't close their eyes to the injustice with the pretext that it exists elsewhere. Precisely because they are not cynical, because they believe in a world without injustice, lies and violence, they go after them, to expose them. That's what Brad did. That's why we are all Brad.

APPO=DESTRUCTION

Raul 30.Oct.2006 04:39

The APPO is an ultra-left militant group that has brought nothing but destruction and chaos to our beautiful city. It is they who have no will to negotiate and will evidently be the cause for more bloodshed.

The rule of thugs

Kazemi 30.Oct.2006 05:31

The "heroic" actions of APPO, leftists and post-colonialists in Oaxaca reminds me of my home country of Iran, where revolutionary Islamic thugs in the "name of the people" attacked and murdered the peaceful folks who were fighting for their rights and for their democracy. Hundreds of students, dissidents, atheists, liberals, democrats were slaughtered by the Islamic thugs and their leftist allies.

Is it any wonder that APPO and the post-colonials as PRD have such a fondness of Islamists, nationalists and right wing religious fascists? Why is Indymedia blind to this alliance of leftists with the ultra-right nationalists and Islamists? Why was Brad Will blind to that?

Información en ESPAÑA

Flavio 30.Oct.2006 13:44

Nuestro apoyoa Oaxaca y a Indymedia.

False Accusations

Anonymous 30.Oct.2006 15:32

It does not make sense to say that the leftists are allied with the ultra right, fascists, islamists, etc.

There's no evidence that the APPO is allied with any such groups. Nor that they're a terrorist organization guilty of the things you accuse them of.

The Mexican government, though, has a lot of blood on it's hands.

Ulisis wasn't giving people what they needed. So the people are trying to get what they need.

Respuesta

anonymous 31.Oct.2006 20:18

our reaction reflects our racism

m. 02.Nov.2006 16:56

brad's death is an outrage. having known him i am personally affected by this. but what i can't help but recognize is an upsetting stirring about the complete lack of solidarity and expression of grief about the murdered oaxacan people during the blockade. there are no cries of disbelief - no lockdowns - not until a white american gets killed. is it because we assume that it's "normal" for black and brown people of the "third world" to kill each other? we think "oh, that sucks, back to my dance parties, coffee drinking, and dumpster diving"???

What about their lives and dignity?

All i'm saying here is let us reflect in this moment about how our racism and classism allows us to ignore the deaths of so many people throughout the world who are fighting for justice or are killed by oppression. let us refelct as to what the reasons are that allow us to be numb. sometimes it's not even in another country - but in our own backyards - as murders by police continue to increasingly go by without protest or sustained alarm.

it will do all lives' and hearts and passions justice.
