DENMARK (NEW IMC): REPRESSION
Police Evict Danish Youth Social Center, Sparking International ProtestsUngdomshuset Solidarity 02 Mar 2007 04:18 GMTYesterday morning (Thursday, 1st of March) at 7 am the police started to attack the Ungdomshuset Youth Center in Copenhagen. The residents of the neighborhood were warned via radio and television because of expected fights in the streets, to keep their distance from the neighborhood of Nørrebro, where the house is located. The media was already talking about violent actions, even before the eviction started. At 7:00 on Thursday, March 1st, the neighborhood of Nørrebro was awoken by the Police and military, who had come to bulldoze Ungdomshuset. It was after not all so easy as they had calculated: the police and paramilitary forces had to deal with a lot of barricades around and by the house. The police were themselves affected by the tear gas that they had injected in through a window. There was street fighting throughout the day and the police lines moved back and forth several times. Indymedia Denmark writes, "Yesterday a total of 219 arrests were made. The rioting continued sporadically throughout the night at various places in Copenhagen. The police succeeded in detaining a number of activists citing 'the public perception of justice' (that people who commit crimes should be punished) and fear that the activists might continue rioting as reasons in court. Today (friday) the police are planning to have reinforcements from all over the country and there's a feeling that this is not over yet. Most likely foreign activists will come to support the danish activists over the weekend and there have been put up infopoints for foreign activists looking for food, a place to stay and ... legal aid." When the eviction began, demonstrations were quickly called in 6 cities in Germany, and there were demonstrations from Blågårds Site at 5:00 p.m. (17h) on Thursday, March 1st, and a Reclaim Demo from Israel at 2:00 p.m. (14h) Denmark's borders are also being monitored, with the government keeping the option open to close off the borders later on. The bridge from Sweden now has a police checkpoint on it. Info-telephone: 26907507 or 26907508. For more information, see news.tv2.dk The Ungdomshuset Solidarity report circulated Thursday morning stated that there were already some (including internationals) in the hospital. There is a call from local people to make it a day of action (in different cities). On Friday and Saturday at 5 p.m., there will be a central demonstration in the city. For supporters in Copenhagen, there are several places to gather:
For pictures, see: Indymedia Germany and UK. School was out for the day, and the free school around the corner made a solidarity action in the streets of the neighborhood (50 young people walking with a box, symbolizing the killing of the project) in christiania burning containers are in the streets. The police officially anounced that residents should "keep away from the quarter". In the city, traffic as disrupted as some solidarity blockades also took place in other parts of the city. |
Welcome to policestate Denmark
Solsort, danish activist 03.Mar.2007 14:11
Today (saturday) the dansih police has arrested 90 people, as they searched several adresses this morning. The police has claimed that they were searching for foreigners to arrest and kick out of denmark, but half of the arrested are from denmark.
Members of ABC (anarchist black cross - legal help for prisoners) has been arrested.
The police has admitted that they used teargas and force to enter a collective were many activists were arrested.
400 activists has been arrested over the last three days, and the police are trying to get as many as possible in prison.
Friday night Nørrebro was the setting of heavy clashes between protestors and the police.
As a street party of 1500-2000 people were starting to move towards ungdomshuset the police took action and used teargas. A police car was set on fire and bricks were thrown at the police. A dansih television station repports that a protestor was hit by the tear gas grenade, and another protester was hitted by a stone and was taken to the hospital - as I am writing he has left the hospital as he felt he did not need any help.
Nørrebro is in a state of emergency and the police can do whatever they want to do.
The war isn't over!
The eviction of ungdomshuset will never be forgotten nor forgiven.

Indymedia coverage thwarted,dispatch contact arrested.
Indymedia Nl dispatcher 04.Mar.2007 15:26
Because we were depending too much on corporate media coverage regarding Ungdomshuset in the past, the Indymedia Netherlands Dispatch team decided to be better prepared for the eviction. Yesterday afternoon, an experienced media-activist, provided with sufficient phone credit, left for Copenhagen,so we could be provided with first hand information on what would happen during this action weekend.Unfortunately, it was not to be.
http://indymedia.nl/nl/2007/03/42796.shtml
As soon as he arrived, our contact went to "Solidaritetshuset", the solidarity house at the Griffenfeldsgade, there was an info point there and it was also the place where the ABC arrestee support group was working from.
His first newsupdate was also his last, all he could do was report that he had just arrived at solidarity house and that the police was assembling in front of the house with the apearant intention to raid the place and that he probabely would be arrested a few minutes later. An hour later, the new arrestee support group that was set up right after the raid, confirmed that everybody that was inside Solidaritetshuset had been arrested, inculding the largest part of the arrestee support group. The police also attempted to break into the ABC office (Anarchist Black Cross, a collective that supports political prisoners, the Copenhagen group also has been doing prisoner support for all Ungdomshuset actions, they had their office there untill recently)
The raid on Solidaritetshuset was not random, it was part of the media strategy the police had set up, because the way arrestees are being treated, was becoming very annoying for them. By this morning a lot more people had been arrested that they can give a "normal" treatment, according to due process, within 24 hours. Several lawyers had already contacted the press to point out irregularities in the procedures. A direct attack on the arrestee support group, who was in touch with the lawyers, was supposed to stop these kinds of messages from getting through to the press, attacking the lawyers themselves being out of the question, of course.
At this moment 400 to 600 people have been arrested, that is twice or even three times as many as there were this morning, this doesn't look promising as far as the respect of the right of the individual detainees is concerned.
Anarchists Fighting for Property or Self Defense?
Dan 04.Mar.2007 18:23
As I was reading this article I started to wonder what exactly the Anarchists/Leftists were fighting for. Was it to actually maintain their property? If it was then the hypocrisy of the situation would be incredible. If property is theft then what are they doing trying to protect it. What if everyone in Denmark made the same claim about all the buildings in Denmark. What would happen?
Ps. Just so you know I consider myself an anarcho-syndicalist and am simply questioning the situation...not condemming it.
The house is now being demolished

This morning they began demolishing the house. The upper stories are already gone as unions and some politicians attempt to stop the illegal work - safety procedures are being largely ignored to speed up the work, and apparently asbestos dust has been spread in the area.
This is a sad day. Not only are they destroying Ungdomshuset, they are destroying more than 100 years of national and international progressive, labour movement and womens movement history.
Ungdomshuset blir!

"As I was reading this article I started to wonder what exactly the Anarchists/Leftists were fighting for. Was it to actually maintain their property? If it was then the hypocrisy of the situation would be incredible"
I don't know if you have read the background for the situation, but in the 80s the squat movement fought against the state to have this house, and in the end they won. then it has been an autonomous freespace in 24 years, and then the city council fuckheads decides to sell the house to a christian fundamental group. So we are pissed off because the city council took away the house, wich was the only one of its kind in Denmark. Not because they took our property but because they destroyed a freespace.
The fight is not as much about that certain house (of course people are angry and sad, afterall we had the house in 24 years and we had many feelings for the house) as it is a fight against the state and their anti-freespace politics.
New communique from the Ungdomshuset Crew

”All changed, changed utterly:

A terrible beauty is born.”
Friends, local and international, we are still here and we’ve never been stronger.
On the 01.03.07 Ungdomshuset Jagtvej 69 was, after a long, hard fought resistance, finally evicted in one of the largest planned police operations in the history of Denmark. An attack on one of the biggest autonomous, cultural and social centres in Europe and on freespaces everywhere.
For nearly an hour our friends fought against the police and bulldozers, with everything they had. Another victory and show of defiance against the Danish Police and State, who believed they would have us out in 4 minutes!!
The anger, outrage and frustrations manifested in a wave of solidarity and resistance not limited to the streets of Nørrebro. Copenhagen burns and the sirens have yet to stop.
Unlimited, heartfelt gratitude goes out to our friends internationally whose determined solidarity and displays of compassion continues to inspire.
Our four demands for a youth house remain. The physical and political pressure implemented by international support is crucial in pushing beyond personal and social boundaries and relations.
With this in mind we invite you back to join us once again in the streets of Copenhagen. For those who cannot come, we encourage you to take creative and militant action in your own cities, neighbourhoods and communities.
The state’s monopoly on physical force and the brutal social control by police has never been more evident. Arrests in the streets and people’s homes, leading to imprisonment and deportations based on empty charges, have become an everyday occurrence. Their mistake! Oppression breeds resistance. Through growing social communications, self activity and networking we stand together. Our anger doesn’t recede …
We don’t forgive. We don’t forget.
The struggle continues …

Hi, thanks for the history, I wasn't aware that the house was free space and not owned by anyone. This makes more sense. I support all of you in your struggle to overthrow capitalism in Europe, and hopefully one day we can accomplish the same in America.
69 Sobre los disturbios en Copenhague
Martha Gutierrez Flores 18.Mar.2007 16:15

((i)) Svizzera italiana 21.Mar.2007 04:43
