By deliberately confusing assets that can be *produced* with assets that can only be *acquired*, modern economics laid the ideological foundation for unemployment, poverty, inequality, and the looming global depression.
With legislation on the verge of passing to close the "School of the Assassins", the time has come this November to stand up against violence, torture, and war! This Nov. 18-20 we ask that all those who stand for justice and democracy join us at the gates of The U.S. Army School of the Americas (SOA/WHINSEC), in Fort Benning, Georgia. In November of 1989, 14-yr old Cecilia Ramos, her mother, and 6 Jesuit Priests were murdered by a Salvadoran Death Squad attempting to instill fear in anyone who raised their voice against El Salvador's military. This November - as the 15th anniversary of the SOA Watch movement and support for legislation HR 1217 on the verge of closing the school - we need YOU, your family and friends, to join us at the gates in Fort Benning to end the violence and demand justice and freedom.

The U.S. stands a good chance of becoming a third world country in the future. I just heard on Nightline that "our" government helps pay for the war in Iraq by taking out loans from other countries like China. What a stupid thing to do.
The attack on the Akshardham temple in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, really should not surprise anyone. India has been suffering such attacks for almost two decades now. A look at the 1990s shows how India and Indians have suffered at the hands of terrorists and religious extremists, all amply aided by Pakistan
We strongly condemn the way responsible authorities 'manage' the issue of bird flu infection in Croatia. This refers to procedures in Zakov Gaj where police squad used rifles and machine guns to shoot poultry which escaped to veterinarians, what, for a good reason, shocked and frightened locals. These kinds of procedures not only violate Animal Welfare Act, but also break constitutional rights of people of Croatia because these measures were conducted against their will. Policemen were breaking into backyards and shooting at poultry while shocked locals were too afraid to object.
Has Israel's stated intention of keeping Palestine off the map “indefinitely” caused Britain and the US any of the concern expressed this week at the remarks of the Iranian President?
The U.S. is enabling Ethiopia to ignore and international court of justice (ICJ) verdict on the border conflict between the two countries. This may result in another devastating war soon creating a major humanitarian crisis. An urgent action is required to force Ethiopia to abide by the ICJ verdict. But there is no sign that the U.S. is moving to avert the potential disaster. A similar callousness which characterized the pre Rwandan Genocide is still the norm in U.S. policy making when it comes to African issues.
A revised Franco-US draft resolution demanding full cooperation from Damascus with the probe into the murder of Lebanon's ex-premier is likely to be readied for a vote by the UN Security Council on Monday, diplomats said.

I am the editor of a new alternative weekly that will serve New Jersey. We are going to have 50% left and 50% conservative content but most importantly, we would like good investigative writing and left writers who have enough smarts and talent to write stuff that doesn't think every Democrat who slaps 'Progressive' on their name tag is a good person.
We are particularly interested in articles that cover the growing gap between rich and poor in the United States and articles that provoke people to rethink policy.
Graduate students are welcome.

Dear Fidel Castro and Cuban People: Nothing shows the disregard of international law as clearly as the attempts by the US, UK and some European countries to set aside the absolute prohibition of torture and ill treatment by re-definition and "rendering" – or the transfer prisoners to regimes that are known to use torture. In effect sub-contracting torture, yet keeping their own hands and conscience clean.
