Born Bruce Duncan Phillips on May 15, 1935 in Cleveland, Ohio, he was the son of labor organizers. Whether through this early influence or an early life that was not always tranquil or easy, by his twenties Phillips demonstrated a lifelong concern with the living conditions of working people. He was a proud member of the Industrial Workers of the World, popularly known as "the Wobblies," an organizational artifact of early twentieth-century labor struggles that has seen renewed interest and growth in membership in the last decade, not in small part due to his efforts to popularize it. utahphillips.org | utahphillips.org/utah.html | utahphillips.blogspot.com Dispatch from the Sit-in at Evergreen, 26.05.2008 02:38

Honor the Dead, But Save the Living Tre Arrow Update - 5/23/08, 26.05.2008 02:38
A Message from Tre: "Blessings to all of you. Perhaps you've heard that I'm set to take a plea bargain on June 3rd. In the aftermath of Briana Waters' and Eric McDavid's trials, I have weighed the options and decided that I don't want to take the risk of potentially being convicted and spending the rest of my life in prison. I want you all to know that this is a non cooperation plea agreement: I am in no way selling my soul just to receive a sweet deal from the prosecution. By this I mean I am not giving them any information about anyone or any thing which could lead to others being prosecuted. They offered me a deal I couldn't refuse, which takes into account the time I served in Canada. For those who supported me through all of this, I thank you deeply. I continue to stand firm in my commitment to being a voice for the Earth. I speak for the trees, for our fellow co inhabitants, and for the voices commonly ignored. This is our home, our one and only Earth Mother. Just as I will protect my birth mother from violation and harm, I am dedicated to being a force to stop the unnecessary and egregious assault on this precious planet. To this end I devote my music, my passion, my life. I look forward to seeing everyone on June 3rd. West Papuan Rainforest defender and land rights activist touring Aotearoa, 26.05.2008 02:10 National speaking tour: Septer Manufandu, West Papua: Tuesday, 27 May to Wednesday, 4 June 2008 Septer Manufandu is the leader of FOKER: the NGO Cooperation Forum in West Papua - the umbrella agency for 64 NGOs working for cultural and human rights in West Papua, which has partners internationally. He formerly worked for Yalhimo, the Humeibou Environment and Indigenous People Foundation, which has been involved in campaigns to protect indigenous land rights and to combat illegal logging. Septer brings a first hand perspective on the devastation and suffering caused when tropical forests are logged for their valuable kwila wood. His visit comes at a time when the Ministry of Forestry is considering its policies concerning illegal logging and the import of kwila, and of growing public concern about deforestation and its impact on climate change. Septer will be speaking at public meetings in Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland and Whangarei, illustrating his talks with a documentary compilation 'Save the People and Forests of Papua' made by local NGOs. Indonesia closely restricts the visit of journalists and humanitarian workers to West Papua so this visit offers a window of information about a 'hidden' region which has been subject to massive human rights violations by the Indonesian Military. The speaking tour is hosted by the Indonesia Human Rights Committee and Pax Christi. The true story of animals in New Zealand, 26.05.2008 01:09 Rebel Press is pleased to announce the re-publication of Clean, Green, and Cruelty Free? The true story of animals in New Zealand. This comprehensive guide to the state of the animal population in Aotearoa New Zealand was compiled by Catherine Amey for the Animal Protection Society. Aotearoa New Zealand is often promoted as a peaceful land of blue skies, pure streams, and rich pastures — a "clean and green" paradise. In reality, our society is based on the sounds, smells and blood of the slaughterhouse. Every year New Zealanders kill over a hundred million animals for food or profit. Over two million battery chickens are crowded into tiny, stinking cages, and thousands of pregnant sows endure boredom and frustration in cramped dark stalls. Animals suffer for our amusement in circuses, zoos, racetracks and rodeos, or are bred and hunted for sport. Hundreds of thousands of animals endure pain in laboratory experiments every year, while many more are trapped, shot, or poisoned because they have been defined as pests. Clean, green and cruelty-free? explodes the myth of New Zealand as a pristine and animal-friendly environment. Designed as a resource for animal advocates, it will be of interest to anyone concerned about animal suffering.
