January 26, Houston: Sister Mawiyah was in Haiti when the earthquake hit on January 12. She has been doing missionary work there for the last 23 years and made it her home for the last five years. The name of her organization is Haitian American Ministries. Bro. Kofi had been notifying us that she was missing during the earthquake and was not responding. But around 2:00am on the morning of January 14, he received a text message from her that confirmed she was alive in the midst of thousands being found dead. January 23, Los Angeles: Despite the heavy rain, 24 people took part in an emergency vigil for Haiti at the Downtown Federal Building, Thursday eve, Jan 21. The vigil's purpose was asking people "to donate money to go to grassroots women and their families, and therefore communities, rather than to thieving elites and their corrupt NGOs." La violence augmente contre les activistes antimines

La violence augmente contre les activistes antimines à Cabanas, au Salvador Le 26 décembre, Dora Alicia Recinos Sorto est devenue la troisième victime d'une vague de violence contre les activistes environnementaux dans la région de Cabañas, au Salvador, où les membres de la communauté protestent contre la réouverture d'une mine d'or exploitée par l'entreprise canadienne Pacific Rim.

Dora Alicia était membre du comité environnemental des Cabañas, et avait participé activement au mouvement d'opposition à la mine. Elle était enceinte de huit mois quand elle a été tuée par balles, et son fils (âgé de deux ans)a lui aussi été blessé lors de l'attaque.

Cet assassinat arrive six jours après celui de Ramiro Rivera Gomez, le vice-président du comité environnemental des Cabañas, qui avait survécu à huit tentatives de meurtres par balles au mois d'août cette année. En juin, un autre activiste écologiste, Gustavo Marcelo Rivera Moreno, avait été torturé et tué. Beaucoup d'autres membres de la communauté ont reçu des menaces de mort. Parmi eux, des travailleurs pour la jeunesse ("youth workers"), des journalistes de la radio locale communautaire Radio Victoria. Le prêtre local Père Luis Quintanilla a échappé de justesse à une tentative d'enlèvement.

Radio Ñomndaa festeja su V Aniversario: la Palabra del Agua fluye en la música, lazos solidarios y nuevas propuestas

El pasado 20 de diciembre, Radio Ñomndaa, la Palabra del Agua, cumplió cinco años de vida. Es la primera radio comunitaria en el estado de Guerrero y la única en el idioma Ñomndaa. Se escucha por miles de personas de las comunidades amuzgas, y para muchas de ellas, es la primera vez en su vida que han podido escuchar música y noticias en su propio idioma. Desde el principio, Radio Ñomndaa ha estado bajo ataque del gobierno federal, estatal y especialmente el gobierno municipal de una cacique poderosa. Major Hotel Strike is Imminent in Puerto Rico

Hotel workers in Puerto Rico are prepared to strike at three hotels: the Conrad Condado Plaza Hilton Hotel, the Caribe Hilton Hotel, and the El San Juan Hilton Hotel & Casino.

Though negotiations between the workers and the Hilton Corporation are expected to continue, a strike is considered imminent. Major disruptions in most services would occur as the strike would involve more than 1,100 employees, including those in housekeeping, restaurants, kitchen, bars, room service, banquets, front desk, bell and door staff, swimming pool, telephone, maintenance, croupiers and slot cashiers. All the beaches of Puerto Rico are, by law, open to the public, and for the duration of the strike, the beaches adjacent to the hotels will be occupied by striking workers and hundreds of their friends and supporters.

100,000 march for System Change not climate change in Copenhagen with mass arrests

Global UN Climate negotiations (COP15) are proceeding in Copenhagen with over 100 heads of state expected to attend in the next week. With 2009 the 5th hottest year on record, Scientists are saying a Climate Treaty is more urgent with Global carbon emissions still increasing and acidification threatening marine biodiversity.

There are major differences between the industrialised nations, the large developing nations of India and China, and the poorest and most vulnerable countries as typified by Tuvalu which proposed to fortify the Kyoto agreement, and Bolivia. In Copenhagen 100,000 people marched, however after 3pm police charged into the march and made arbitrary mass arrests estimated to be about 1,000. Further protests are occurring the next week inside the conference center and on the streets, check Denmark Indymedia for details and reports.

Many thousands of people attended a global weekend of vigils organised by 350.org and other protests with Walk Against Warming In Australia attracting 90,000 people, with 40,000 attending a Melbourne rally. (Video)

La Conférence des Nations-Unies de 2009 sur le climat doit se tenir à Copenhague du 7 au 18 Décembre. Présentée comme la dernière chance de sauver notre futur, doit-on s'étonner de constater que les populations soient en colère ? Récemment, La campagne 350.org a clairement montré le désir des populations de réduire drastiquement les émissions mondiales, pourtant, nous avons déjà vu de telles manifestations populaires auparavant, comme les manifestations mondiales contre la guerre en 2003 qui ont eues peu d'impact sur les gouvernements. Mais ce n'est pas seulement par rapport aux émissions. Les pays du sud qui n'y ont que peu contribués subissent aujourd'hui la majeure partie des conséquences. De plsu en plus les chargés de campagne climat disent que nous ne pouvons pas confier notre futur au marché et que nous ne devons pas nous reposer sur 'les fausses solutions'.

Indymedia.us et EFF(Electronic Frontier Foundation) contre-attaque avec succès

Indymedia.us est heureux de vous annoncer que nous sommes parvenus avec succès, après presqu’un an d’action légale menée par Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) en notre nom, à contre-attaquer un subpoena bidon rendu par le Bureau Fédéral d’Investigation (FBI) conjointement un grand jury d’investigation. La requête exigeait que nous remettions les adresses IP de toutes les connexions pour un jour du mois de juin 2008 – non seulement Indymedia.us objecte à cette requête excessivement vaste et d’une illégitimité flagrante, mais en plus, conformément aux meilleurs pratiques d’Indymedia, nous ne gardons jamais les traces de telles connexions, afin de préserver au maximum la vie privée de nos utilisateurs. Également inquiétant était le fait que l’administratrice système d’indymedia.us qui avait reçu le subpoena, était aussi contrainte par un « gag order» (impératif de silence), la mettant dans l’impossibilité de discuter la question légale avec un plus large réseau de collectifs coopérants sur le site d’Indymedia.us. Nous sommes heureux que l’EFF ait finalement pu démontrer que cet ordre de silence est tout aussi illégitime – on ne peut que se demander combien d’ISP ont silencieusement capitulé face à des requêtes vastes et illégitimes de la sorte.

G20 Finance Ministers fail to agree on Climate Change Finance Package

G20 Finance ministers failed to reach agreement on the financing required for a global agreement to stave off catastrophic climate change, according to WWF Scotland. The Finance Ministers of the G20 countries were meeting in St Andrews, Scotland on 6-7 November.

Outside the G20 Finance Ministers meeting in St Andrews students and civil society gathered with an alternative summit on Saturday and Students Blockading the G20 meeting on the road to the Fairmont Hotel in an attempt to disrupt the G20 finance ministers as they arrived at their St Andrews hotel location. A rally occured in St Andrews to say 'Nae Tae G20.' on November 7. (Photos) The students were protesting against the G20's current policies regarding the economic recession.

Industrialised World Intransigence on CO2 emissions dooms Climate Negotiations

Africa abandons Barcelona's pre COP15 climate talks - Anger in the streets at rich nations inaction. Copenhagen Climate Treaty appears doomed - delays likely. Delay is not an option, delay kills.

This week (Nov 2 - 6) the Barcelona International Climate Change Talks are happening, five days of formal negotiations, in the lead up to COP 15 in Copenhagen in December 2009. Already Barcelona has seen a Manifestation in Barcelona streets - "The climate is not for sale" (Youtube vid | report), Outdoor film screening in city streets of Age of Stupid, TckTckTck wake up call for climate talks, Greenpeace banner drop (Youtube), Anarchist night greeting, Africa boycott U.N. climate talks (Grist report), Evening Water Lobby group targeted, and the Main entrance shut down by activists.

Conservation organisations have warned that the Copenhagen climate treaty threatens to subsidise the destruction of the world's remaining rainforests instead of financing their protection. In Indonesia Greenpeace established a Climate Defenders Camp to preserve Rainforest peatlands (Youtube Video). On October 24, 2009 people in 181 countries came together through 350.org calling for carbon emissions to be capped at 350ppm. It was the most widespread day of environmental action in the planet's history, at over 5200 events around the world, many of them reported on the Indymedia Network. (Photos)

Opposition to EDL Rally in Leeds, UK

On 31st October 2009 in City Square, Leeds, the English Defence League held a rally. The EDL is a nationalist, islamophobic organisation formed earlier this year and is widely viewed as racist.

A counter-demonstration was organised by Unite Against Fascism (UAF). Participants described it variously as being dull, jubilant and tightly controlled. Meanwhile, other anti-EDL groups attempted to confront EDL directly. Reports suggest that at least two large groups attempted to reach EDL to confront them at City Square, but were turned back towards the UAF rally by police (see time-line for first-hand accounts).

Reports from the area around City Square were that most of the EDL supporters didn't go into their pen. Some were held between police lines and others regrouped on Boar Lane, before being brought back to the railway station by the police. Another group of EDL marched around the Albion Street area and responded violently when challenged about their inflammatory chanting.
