Opponents to CAFTA see it as an agreement that will continue to pit workers in the US against workers in Central America in a race to the bottom. A race characterized by low wages, human rights violations, environmental destruction, union busting, corporate interests, and the marginalization of women. A free trade agreement viewed as a step towards the larger, much more ominous Free Trade Area of the Americas. un altre món és aquí, 17.07.2005 18:00

Karl Rove's Defense is No Defense, 16.07.2005 05:04 The Right Wing is arguing that Rove did not know that Valerie Plame was a covert agent and is therefore not guilty. They are arguing that Rove does not have the requisite intent under the statute to be culpable for committing the crime of releasing the name of a covert agent, because he did not know that Plame was a covert agent. But the plain meaning of the statute shows that this line of argument does not matter . . . High School Students to Hold Anti-War Rally on Campus, 16.07.2005 05:01

Tenncare Enrollees Enter Week Four: Occupation of State Capital Continues . . ., 16.07.2005 01:03 Interview with Stan Davidson, Member of Tenncare Sit-in Core Group Stan Davidson is a Tenncare Enrollee who has been part of the core group that has been occupying the State Capital for twenty two days, going on week four. Davidson says that his group is a hodge podge mix of people of different ethnicities, different levels of physical ability, and various interests. Davidson says that there has been so much going around the State Capital that the core group hasn't been able to keep up with who has been coming and going, let alone what is happening in rural Tennesse organizing around Tenncare. He says that his group is unified in its desire to save Tenncare, the state's health insurance program for the poor and uninsurable, and that they are in this occupation for the long term, intending to continue to occupy the State Capital day and night until their demands are met for an open, transparent meeting with the Governor about Tenncare. Nashville's Homeless Gather at State Capital to Urge Governor to Save Tenncare, 16.07.2005 01:03 Members of Nashville's Homeless Power Project held a press conference yesterday in front of the Governor's office on day 24 of the sit in at the State Capital by Tenncare Enrollees who were demanding to meet with the Governor to stop the Tenncare cuts and hold a public meeting. The organizers of the sit-in, many of whom are Tenncare Enrollees, say that the homeless are one of the most vulnerable populations to be cut off of Tenncare. Howard Allen, a homeless man without health insurance, says that may people will die in the streets if they lose their health care coverage. This morning we found them and a small group of activists have been annoying them all day. heres an update on whats been happening today! Last night, some known vivisectors were spotted coming out of a hotel in central Wellington. This morning at 7am, a bunch of activists spread out around Thorndon, and followed vivisectors as they left the hotel to see where they went. Several bunches of vivisectors were followed and they all ended up in one place. The Royal Society Buildings in Halswell St, Thorndon. It looks like they couldn’t find a proper venue at all and all the vivisectors are crammed into the Royal Society Buildings. So, at 10-30 this morning a bunch of extremely pissed off activists turned up with drums and stuff and proceeded to deafen the vivisectors and ruin their little meeting. After an hour of this, we jumped into cars and headed out to Hutt valley for a pre arranged visit to the labs out there. [ Photos ] The G8 and Indymedia, 16.07.2005 01:02 In 1990, the G7 held its meeting in London. It passed by quietly. There were no 'red zones' and only a small protest took place. Eight years later, 400 social movements from around the world - under the banner of Peoples' Global Action - co-ordinated local resistance to global problems. In the UK 50,000 people came together to resist the G8 meeting. In 2005, the G8 returns to the UK. Inspired by the Zapatistas, who, in 1994, said YA BASTA! to neo-liberalism and declared war on the Mexican Governement on the day the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) went into effect, people have taken up Direct Action in every corner of the world to fight for another world. The summits of the financial institustions (WTO, IMF and the World Bank) and meetings of politicals leaders (G8, APEC, EU summits) have become the target of environmental and social justice activists. Radical media activists have played a vital role in covering these protests and actions. Indymedia has become the target of the authorities on too many occasions for telling the truth. In Genoa (G8 2001) the Indymedia Centre at the Diaz School was raided by the cops and media activists were beaten up brutally. In 2003 (G8 Evian) the Indymedia Centre in Geneva was also stormed by the police and dozens of people were arrested. In Wellington, Indymedia activists will set up an Indymedia Centre this week on 166 Cuba St. to report on the global protests. 'Berlusconi's Mousetrap', an account of what happened in Genoa at the G8 meeting in 2001, will be screened at 7:30pm on Friday, 8th July, at Thistle Hall (corner Cuba and Arthur St). Check out http://www.g8radio.net/ for live radio streaming from Scotland. WORKERS CHARTER Movement formed in Auckland, 16.07.2005 01:02 A Workers Charter movement was founded in Auckland on 2 July by 50 activists, with 20 more sending their support. Coming from an array of left groups, workers' unions and social movements, they were united in their desire to give workers a political voice. HUNTLY MINERS SAY - NO SCAB COAL!, 16.07.2005 01:02 Miners in Huntly fighting for a fair pay raise have been suspended by Solid Energy management, and are now looking for solidarity action from steel workers in Glenbrook Steel Mill, where a worker was killed on July 4th. Both groups of workers are members of the EPMU, but Huntly miners are furious that Glenbrook bosses are now using scab coal to keep their furnaces going. They are appealing to Glenbrook workers not to touch the coal. The miners were looking for 5% on top of the national 5% pay raise campaign, a militant "5+5" demand that keeps up with inflation. Following the lockout, they learned that the local Genesis Power station was selling their coal to Glenbrook, ensuring that a go slow there was beaten and that the steel mill was at full production. Huntly miners are furious that a warchest of "up to 150,000 tonnnes of scab coal" is now being used to starve their campaign into the ground. G8 - Protests in Scotland and Aotearoa, 16.07.2005 01:02 50 people showed up for a protest against the G8, Free Trade and Climate Change in Wellington. [ Report ] The proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with China was auctioned off on Lambton Quay. Bidders traded workers rights, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Democracy, Biodiversity and FUN for the FTA in return. A teach-in, film night and community dinner were also well attended. Auckland saw up to a hundred people gather in a Carnival Against Capitalism which included chalking, Food Not Bombs and speakers. Leaflets were handed out and well recieved, and some ACT Party members turned up with "Enjoy Capitalism" t-shirts providing comic relief. In Christchurch people gathered at Bedford row on Saturday to participate in 'the dance of dissent'. A street was occupied, a tripod set up, music was running and Food not Bombs seved free food. In Scotland activists protested all week. On Saturday, the 'Make Property History' bloc off the 225'000 strong 'Make Poverty History' march clashed with police. The Carnival for Full Enjoyment travelled around the streets of Edinburgh on Monday 4th, involving a cast of G8 Summit protesters, clowns, police and local people. The same day, Faslane, a nuclear submarine base, was blockaded by 2000 activists. On the first day of the summit, protesters blocked all roads to Gleneagles. 10'000 people were on a protest in Auchterader. The permieter fence to the Gleneagles hotel was dismantled. Many arrests were made throughout the week. The legal support team estimate that at least 700 people were arrested and 350 charged. According to BBC some New Zealanders were among the ones arrested. [ Report from H. Plant ] Update: A New Zealand medic was arrested on the 4th of July at the Carnival for Full Enjoyment and later forced to leave Scotland [Report]. |
