Oakland's Proposal for Massive Influx of New West Oakland Residents

San Francisco Bay Area, 21.04.2014 23:05

Advance the Struggle writes: What follows is a critique of the West Oakland Specific Plan - WOSP - which the city of Oakland hopes will help in "developing" West Oakland and is attempting to pass in the coming weeks. The development that's presented is about attracting an influx of capital investment - retail, industrial, and high wage residents - and transforming West Oakland into a center of commerce for a new set of residents. New growth is about raising property values and attracting new residents and businesses, not improving the situations of those who already live there.

Santa Cruz, CA, 21.04.2014 23:04

Thousands of people, though not as many as in previous years, returned to Porter Meadow at UC Santa Cruz on April 20, 2014 (also Easter Sunday) to celebrate 420, the unorganized annual counterculture holiday. All these people have at least one thing in common; a love for smoking cannabis.

Israeli Military Is Largest Recipient of U.S. Military Aid, Behind Afghanistan

Santa Cruz, CA, 20.04.2014 23:03

Community members gathered in downtown Santa Cruz today on Tax Day, April 15, to protest the U.S. government's military aid to Israel. According to If Americans knew, Israel has been the largest recipient of U.S. foreign aid since 1976, and in the last 20 years economic aid to that country has been slowly phased out in favor of military aid. Israel receives about $3 billion ($8 million a day) directly from the United States in military financing each year, which is about one-fifth of what is allocated for the entire foreign aid budget.

"PEOPLE OVER PROFIT"

We want to encourage everyone to come out this May Day and stand united for social & economic justice. Together we can build a movement to take back our communities .

As we approach International Workers Day in 2014, we find ourselves facing unprecedented cuts to public services including education, street and park maintenance, social services, unemployment insurance and much more. As a result we are seeing a rapid increase in symptoms of poverty including houselessness and food insecurity. Along with all of this we continue to experience attacks on people of color, immigrants, working families, women, students and our right to organize.

Our response to this onslaught against humanity is to organize and FIGHT BACK!!

People Over Profit!

Suffolk University: Partner in Armenian Genocide Denial?

Boston, 17.04.2014 23:04

Suffolk University must reverse its decision to honor Abraham Foxman with an honorary law degree at its 2014 commencement. Rewarding those who deny the Armenian genocide is morally indefensible.

Report Back: 4th Annual Hahamongna Walkabout

LA, 16.04.2014 23:05

Hahamongna is a Native American village site at what's now the base of JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) and currently threatened by an overly-elaborate plan to renovate Devil's Gate Dam. This plan involves defoliating the area. Alternative plans would spare the ecosystem; however, the more grandiose one seems to be favored because more money is involved. Those interested in a more sustainable approach to cleaning Devil's Gate Dam are encouraged to contact their city council members (if residents of Pasadena) or Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich (if residents of Los Angeles County).

The Arroyo Seco Foundation conducts regular tours, not only of Hahamongna Watershed Park (known for many years as Elk Grove Park) but the surrounding areas, identifying the many uses of local native plants. Participants of the 4th Annual Hahamongna Walkabout (and Bikeabout) learned about local Indigenous culture and got to eat pancakes made from local acorns and sample chia seeds and elderberries.

Southern California Joins Worldwide Wave Of Action

LA, 16.04.2014 23:05

The Worldwide #WaveOfAction began Friday, April 4th at former Occupy sites around the world. Citing studies that “have proven that it only takes 3.5% of the population taking nonviolent action to create meaningful and positive change,†the originators of the idea have called for a three-month cycle of action beginning, symbolically, on the date of the assassination of Martin Luther King and ending, symbolically, on July 4, 2014.

In Southern California, rallies were held in Los Angeles, Westminster, Anaheim, and San Diego. A morning march from the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce to Congressman Xavier Becerra’s preceded a vigil for the “Robin Hood tax†(H.R. 1579). People rallied at City Hall at noon in solidarity with the #WorldWideWave.

People of Westminster, CA united for an all-day rally in Freedom Park honoring the civil rights legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Free food, screen printing, pageantry, and community spirit were present long into the evening.

The Anaheim, CA Wave of Action was called to bring awareness to killer police in Orange County as well as the rising numbers of homeless on the streets of America.

In San Diego, Civic Center Plaza was re-occupied for the day with a message of “Evolve, Survive, Thrive†and “UNITE in LOVE.â€

What It Is Like to Be Homeless in Downtown Fresno

San Francisco Bay Area, 05.04.2014 23:16

Homeless people in downtown Fresno can no longer set up encampments. They must put up a tent in the evening and take it down early in the morning. During the day, they have to stay with their property or it will be taken and put into storage. On March 6, the Fresno City Council passed an ordinance that makes it easier for the police to remove shopping carts from the homeless. These "quality of life" ordinances add pressure to be constantly on the move and never have a place to stay that is safe and secure.

Steve Pleich writes: There has been much discussion over the last several months concerning the wisdom of having a fully functional Needle Exchange Program in our community. Many have expressed doubts about the public health benefits of such a program, but a clear-eyed and dispassionate analysis of those benefits has been subsumed by an overriding public safety concern.
