Fatal encounter: Jennifer Laude meets US Marine Corps

Boston, 21.10.2014 23:04

PHILIPPINES: As I peered at Jennifer Laude’s serene face in the open casket, I saw the wound on her forehead that was barely concealed by the mortician’s make up. I did not see the bruises on her neck and shoulders, but a person familiar with the autopsy said they were severe.

Call for Medical Aid Donations for Kobane

Boston, 20.10.2014 23:04

Kobane sorely needs medical supplies to maintain the defense of the city and many civilians. Doctors inside Kobane are fixing up people the best they can, including external fixation limbs mangled by gunshot wounds, but still people are bleeding to death after reaching aid stations and while being held up by Turkish border police on the way to nearby Turkish hospital. The main clinic in Kobane has been overrun by IS and later destroyed and medical care is now taking place in private homes. IS also recently burned an entire supply warehouse belonging to a local Kurdish relief organization. We've formulated a list with suggested donations that individuals and collectives can pack up and mail themselves.

Video: Tiny Houses for the Homeless

Portland, 17.10.2014 22:51

Housing should be a human right and yet is often subverted by the right to speculation. This video of Opportunity Village in Eugene Oregon shows what citizens like Pastor Bryant of the First Christian Church can do. Arnold Kunzli is an emeritus Swiss professor and author of Housing as a Human Right
 http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2003/06/266635.shtml

The cost comes down to three dollars a night per person, and one of those three dollars is paid by the villagers themselves. They all pay thirty dollars a month for their utilities, for the water, and electricity and Internet service even. So we are running this facility for two bucks a head a night.

URGENT: Olympic Nat'l Forest at risk from USN "Electronic Warfare Range" PLEASE COMMENT as

Portland, 17.10.2014 22:51

The Olympic National Forest (and even greater areas of eastern Washington) are slated to be converted to be used as the "Pacific Northwest Electronic Warfare Range" by the US Navy. The deadline to do something to save this precious fragile place is Oct. 10th. This is a big, permanent, expanding, military project that will change the Peninsula forever. The Forest Service can still say No.

Please go to the link (US Forest Service) in the forwarded message below from nbeety and send a comment objecting. People were not informed the way they should have been, and most locals are still unaware of this. We should demand a much longer comment period and public forums for local inhabitants of the areas, including Native American reservations.

The "emitters" the Navy wants to deploy, some mobile and some permanent, surround the Quinalt Indian reservation and impinge on other Native American land.

In order to find inspiration for comment writing, I went through all the public comments that had been posted as of 10/5 at the Forest Service site (see links below) . This is very laborious and time-consuming, so in order to save others that trouble, I put a collection of them into one text file that you can see at
 http://soula.org/files/OlympicForestComments.txt

DEMAND PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD EXTENSION! At least 30 more days. People in eastern Washington received zero notice, and those on the Peninsula had a piece of paper stuck on the post office window for a week or two.

To ask for extension, write to Greg Wahl at  gtwahl@fs.fed.us or call (360) 956-2375.

Always mention negative effect on TOURISM!

3 Billion Gallons of Oil Industry Wastewater Illegally Dumped into Central Valley Aquifers

San Francisco Bay Area, 16.10.2014 22:51

As the oil industry spent record amounts on lobbying in Sacramento and made record profits, documents obtained by the Center for Biological Diversity reveal that almost 3 billion gallons of oil industry wastewater were illegally dumped into Central California aquifers that supply drinking water and irrigation water for farms.

Columbus Day Protest, Downtown L.A.

LA, 16.10.2014 22:50

Columbus Day has been suffering setbacks of late. Minneapolis; Berkeley, California; and most recently Seattle now observe Indigenous People's Day instead. San Francisco has Italian Heritage Day; Hawaii, Discoverers Day (i.e., the discovery of the islands by Polynesians); and South Dakota, Native American Day. Venezuela dropped Columbus Day in 2002 in favor of Day of Indigenous Resistance. Mexico, El Salvador, Argentina, and other countries celebrate Dia de la Raza. While Columbus Day's still recognized here in Southern California, a new annual protest occurs in downtown L.A.

While en route to the ornate Cathedral of Los Angeles, we got a clear view of it with a homeless camp in the foreground. Well over 30 protesters lined the sidewalk across the street from the church with signs. Several horrific and barbaric deeds of Columbus and other pious Europeans were mentioned via megaphone as patrons, including a large group of teenagers, exited the church and stood in front.

Call-out for international solidarity with social center De Vloek

Boston, 09.10.2014 23:06

The city government of The Hague, The Netherlands wants to evict De Vloek (The Curse) free space on January 5, 2015 to make room for a sailing center. Located in the harbor of Scheveningen, De Vloek was squatted 12.5 years ago and meanwhile has grown to be an essential social space in the harbor. There is already enough space for sport sailing in the harbor, but De Vloek must nevertheless step aside for the latest prestigious real estate project which nobody is looking forward to.

Public Right to Access California Coastline Reaffirmed

San Francisco Bay Area, 09.10.2014 22:52

On September 24, the Surfrider Foundation scored a huge victory in its protracted legal battle against billionaire and venture capitalist Vinod Khosla to restore beach access at Martin's Beach in San Mateo, California. In 2010, Khosla had locked gates that provided the only public access to the beach. "Today's court decision upholding the Coastal Act is an important victory for Martin's Beach and ultimately strengthens the public's right to beach access in California," says Angela Howe, Legal Director for the Surfrider Foundation.

Drakes Bay Oyster Company Agrees to Close

San Francisco Bay Area, 08.10.2014 22:52

On October 6, the Department of the Interior and the Drakes Bay Oyster Company announced a settlement agreement that will dismiss the oyster company's failed litigation and assign clean-up costs for the mess caused by the company's non-native oyster cultivation. The settlement agreement follows four consecutive Federal court decisions that upheld DOI's November 12 decision to let Drakes Bay Oyster Company's lease expire as long planned, thereby protecting the West Coast's first marine wilderness at Drakes Estero within Point Reyes National Seashore.

Prop 1

LA, 07.10.2014 22:52

Dozens of voters occupied the median of Sunset Blvd outside the Stewart and Lynda Resnick mansion in Beverly Hills Thursday afternoon to declare “No More Sweetheart Deals for Billionaire Farmers!†Hand-painted signs pleaded for “real water solutions, not Prop 1†and decried the water bond as “water for the 1%,†not for the people of California. #NoOnProp1

At the “No on Prop 1†press conference, actors portraying the Resnicks toasted the growth of their own wealth thanks to powerful friends in Sacramento, while a tuxedo-clad waiter held a tray of POM Wonderful juice, Fiji Water, and Wonderful Pistachios (brands owned by the Resnicks’ umbrella company Roll Global). The skit touted record profits in a drought year, revealing the business model of growing water-intensive crops on toxic Central Valley soil for export to foreign markets in China.

Mary Kay's son was murdered; Chris spoke of his experience as an innocent man in Pelican Bay prison. Long time Amnesty International member Terry McCaffrey said it is clear that support for the death penalty is in decline, but "we must not let up on our struggle to put an end to capital punishment".

San Francisco Bay Area, 05.10.2014 22:51

April Negrette and Kimball Bighorse have filed tort claims against the City and County of San Francisco for police brutality that occurred when the Giants called in SFPD to eject Negrette and Bighorse from its June 23, 2014, "Native American Heritage Night" event and game. Ms. Negrette and Mr. Bighorse had peacefully confronted a group of inebriated men who were inappropriately and disrespectfully wearing a plastic counterfeit Native American-themed headdress. The Giants ordered the San Francisco Police to eject Negrette and Bighorse from the stadium, but not the drunken men, most of whom were white.

BOSTON IWW’S TO GCI: F U!

Boston, 04.10.2014 23:06

Reposted from the Boston IWW blog. Today Wobblies from Boston took to the street to support Portland OR canvassers, employed by Grassroots Campaigns Inc (GCI), who formed the United Campaign Workers* union in response to poverty pay, impossible quotas, meager training, and blatant disrespect. Canvassers’ demands included $15/hr, overtime pay, and sick leave. The company retaliated by shutting down its Portland operation, laying off employees with no notice and just two days’ wages!
