De nuevo, como cada dos a�os, la Korrika llega a Euskal Herria. Este a�o la carrera durar� nuevamente 10 d�as y recorrer� 2.150 kilometros por toda Euskal Herria. Noche y d�a, sin detenerse en ning�n momento. Se espera la participaci�n de m�s de 600.000 personas de toda edad y condici�n, al igual que en anteriores ediciones. El desarrollo de la Korrika d�a a d�a, fotos de anteriores ediciones, el video y la canci�n , as� como la sorprendente iniciativa de la ziberkorrika entre otras, se pueden encontrar en la web oficial de la Korrika. Korrika 15 homenajear� a la MUJER EUSKALDUN, porque korrika 15 quiere resaltar la importancia y el papel imprescindible que ha tenido en la transmisi�n de nuestro idioma. A trav�s de diferentes �pocas, han sido las mujeres las que han hecho frente con fuerza y con valent�a a las leyes enemigas del euskara, y las que han guardado, mantenido y transmitido oralmente nuestro idioma en nuestras casas. (Adhesi�n al Manifiesto). Korrika es una carrera a favor del euskara que recorre toda Euskal Herria, organizada por la Coordinadora de Alfabetizaci�n y Euskaldunizaci�n AEK. El objetivo de dicha carrera es la concienciaci�n e impulso del euskara y recabar fondos para llevar a cabo dicho trabajo d�a a d�a en los centro de aprendizaje de euskara de la coordinadora. Desde la primera carrera, que se celebr� en 1980 desde O�ati (Gipuzkoa) hasta Bilbao (Bizkaia), korrika se ha convertido en uno de los actos m�s importantes a favor del euskara, por el n�mero de personas que logra aglutinar. Ya se han realizado 14 ediciones de korrika en los �ltimos 26 a�os.
Hands Off Iraqi Oil

Amidst the daily violence suffered by Iraqis, oil companies and the US and UK governments are planning to secure long-term control over Iraqi oil. Accounting for 10% of the world total and 95% of government revenue, the stakes for oil companies and the Iraqi people are incredibly high. A Hydrocarbon Law which advocates a radical restructuring of Iraq's oil industry was approved by the Iraqi cabinet this February. It was crafted in secret over an 8 month period from July 2006, in consultation with 9 foreign oil companies, the US and UK governments and the IMF. Iraqi Parliamentarians saw it for the first time this February. Iraqi civil society has had no involvement in the process, despite lobbying for inclusion. For the past four years, contractual mechanisms such as Production Sharing Agreements (PSAs) and Exploration Risk Contracts have been promoted by oil companies and occupation-installed oil ministers and advisers. Once signed, they are virtually unchangeable and will control development of Iraq's oil for decades. They will cost the Iraqi state billions in lost revenue. This law surrenders Iraq's sovereignty and economic future to foreign interests. It has been crafted in secret, and pushed forward through war and occupation. No law should be passed, let alone contracts signed, while Iraq is subjected to a military occupation and foreign interference.

Illegal Tree Felling By Developers at Garden Festival Site

Langtree Mclean, the developers who want to build on the old garden festival site, have cut down more than 1000 trees already - they don't have planning permission yet and they don't own the site yet! If they get their way, the site will be almost completely clear-felled. They are destroying semi-mature trees, including oaks, from the original plantings for the Garden Festival in the early 1980s. Judge Dismisses Two Charges Against Ed Rosenthal

On Wednesday, March 14th, it was announced that two charges against Ed Rosenthal were dismissed. Federal District Court Judge Charles Breyer ruled that Rosenthal, who is an author and medical marijuana activist, was vindictively prosecuted, and dismissed charges of tax evasion and money laundering. The remaining marijuana charges against Rosenthal are virtually identical to those pursued against him in his 2003 trial. Rosenthal's trial has been continued, and a status conference will be held on April 13th at 11:00am.

War Resister Kyle Snyder Arrested in Canada, then Released

On Friday, February 23, U.S. war resister Kyle Snyder was arrested in British Columbia for unspecified immigration violations. Police in Nelson, BC barged into Snyder’s home, handcuffed him, and hauled him off to jail. The police had no warrant. Snyder, who was wearing only a robe and boxer shorts at the time, was not allowed to put on clothes or shoes. He was not read his rights or allowed to call his lawyer. Nelson police told him he would be deported to the U.S., where he is wanted for unauthorized absence from the U.S. Army.
The U.S. Army requested the illegal apprehension.

Over 300 people lined the stairs to Washington’s Capitol in Olympia today and then filled three rooms for the hearing on SMJ 8016. Another memorial calling on Congress to reject the troop surge (SMJ 8003) was also heard. It was an excellent pairing, since the war in Iraq was premised on the deceptions perpetrated by Bush/Cheney. Those deliberate deceptions are one of the major impeachable offenses.

Last year the military exported war and occupation through the Port of Olympia in broad daylight. The Olympia community responded with strong resistance. Fort Lewis was scared enough to avoid Olympia this year and has decided to export war through Tacoma instead, under the cover of darkness. Army Stryker vehicles began moving to the Port of Tacoma late Friday night, early Saturday morning and are not yet finished.
Tacoma Port Militarization Resistance (PMR) is working with Olympia PMR to protest and stop the shipment of more military vehicles (and consequently, more troops) to Iraq.

Saturday night, 30-40 regional activists observed multiple convoys from Ft Lewis coming through the Port of Tacoma to be shipped to Iraq. Riot cops had a big presence, probably 30 or so. Activists had a presence there to show that we do not want the military using our port. We need more people! Another action is planned Sunday night @ 9pm for the next expected set of convoys. The more people that come, the more of an effect we can have. If we have enough people, we can possibly take direct action and stop or slow down the militarization of our port. We need people! Let's stop the military from using our port!
3 Arrested at Port of Tacoma (video)

Wally Cuddeford, Caitlin Esworthy and Jeff Berryhill were arrested Sunday night / early hours of Monday morning by Tacoma Police while nonviolently protesting the movement of Stryker Combat Vehicles through the Port of Tacoma. They are currently (4:16 AM Monday) being held in Pierce County Jail (S 9th and Tacoma Ave (910 Tacoma Ave)) with one charge each of Assault 3, a felony. Their bail is set at $10,000 apiece. Caitlin's arraignment hearing is on Tuesday morning.

Wally Cudderford Arrested At Tacoma City Council Meeting

Today, a group of us went down to the Tacoma City Council meeting to talk during the public speaking section. After a couple of us had spoken our mind about the brutality of the police at the Port, Wally Cudderford (who was arrested and tazed 3 times on Saturday) got up to read something he had written.
When he began shedding light on the fact that the TPD allowed their chief to use their resources to stalk his wife and connected that with how he did NOT expect the police to EVER be accountable for their actions, the council tried to silence him. When he continued to speak, a council member told the police to remove him from the building.

Following an afternoon rally at the Federal Courthouse in Tacoma on Friday, members of Port Militarization Resistance staged a peaceful demonstration at the Port of Tacoma, where they were met by Tacoma Police. Later, police turned violent and launched tear gas and rubber bullets at activists as they sat chanting peace slogans.

Unintimidated by hundreds of police in riot gear, peaceful antiwar demonstrators turned out in large numbers at the Port of Tacoma Monday night, where a port militarization resistance movement that began Mar. 3 entered its eleventh day. March 16th: Rachel Corrie Remembrance Events on the Fourth Anniversary of Her Death (Olympia)

Rachel was a 23 year-old college student at The Evergreen State College who traveled to the Occupied Territories in the winter of 2003. Rachel went to Rafah, in the Gaza Strip, to do human rights monitoring and to begin a project she hoped would culminate in a Sister City relationship between Olympia and Rafah. On March 16, 2003, she was run over and killed by an Israeli military bulldozer while defending the home of a Palestinian pharmacist, his wife, and three young children against illegal demolition.
She will be remembered during a variety of events on the fourth anniversary of her death.

On February 1st a small but unified group set up what would eventually become Camp Quixote on a vacant city lot in downtown Olympia. What began as a few tents and a handful of supporters has turned into a democratic communtiy of those without homes, and a cause that has roused the interest of many who live in the Olympia area and beyond.
On March 17th from 1-4pm at St. John’s Episcopal Church members of Camp Quixote, the faith based community, and local non-profits invite anyone and everyone to Meet Camp Quixote. This event will present the opportunity for those in the community to have direct discussion with those currently living at the camp.

TLC Does Not Mean Tender Loving Care: At Least Not for Everyone

March 1, 2007, marked the first anniversary of the implementation of a free trade agreement between El Salvador and the United States of America. DR-CAFTA has been something many Salvadoraños have opposed from the very beginning of negotiations. After one year of experiencing the effects first-hand of Tratado de Libre Comercio, also commonly known as simply TLC, it is unsurprising the streets of San Salvador were not quiet. The innards of DR-CAFTA were hashed out behind closed doors by the elite power holders, in this specific case, the ARENA government and the Bush Administration. The TLC agreement passed all legislation necessary despite an immense amount of resistance against neo-liberal models of trade throughout the Americas. Before the creation of this free trade zone in 2005, foreign investment in El Salvador was at $300 million - in 2006 it declined to $222 million. Also in 2006, the inflation rate of El Salvador grew from 4.3% to 4.9%, the second quickest growth of inflation in the last 10 years for the country. Ashland Citizens Address Proposed Logging on Mount Ashland

(March 3, 2007, Ashland, Oregon) Concerned citizens, spiritual representatives from many Ashland churches, temples, and local tribes, met in Ashland's Lithia Park to honor and highlight the pristine Ashland Watershed. Concerns were highlighted about the Mount Ashland Association's proposal to log seventy acres of old-growth forests (for new ski runs), thus possibly impacting the Ashland Watershed.
A group of approximately fifty community members met in Lithia Park beside a gurgling stream, emphasizing the beauty and "lifeforce" of Ashland Creek and other areastreams, rivers, and its local watershed. The event was hosted by Grandmothers & Friends in Green, chaired by Angie Thusius, who opened the event by stating, "There are old-growth forests among this watershed. Their roots help to anchor the soil on the mountains. Our bodies are 70% water, and the planet is approximately 70% water, so we are gathering here today at Ashland Creek to honor the water in this area." Ms. Thusius formed her group last June after reading in the local Ashland newspaper that The Mount Ashland Association was "planning on logging seventy acres of old-growth forests for ski slopes." Noting that "worldwide watersheds are diminishing, and that we can all think about the future, preserve the Middle Branch (of Ashland Creek's East Fork) and keep it undisturbed." Pointing to the facts about Ashland's Mission Statement, she also added, "Our City (of Ashland), in terms of watershed issues, has the power to maintain and preserve our watershed from developments." Sodexho Contract Terminated by PSU Administration

PSU administration has decided to terminate the food services contract with multinational corporation Sodexho. On Wednesday of this week, [2/28/07] PSU administration informed multi-national corporation, private prison supporter and current PSU food service contract holder Sodexho of their decision to terminate their contract with the company effective June 31st.
Now is the time for students, activists and everyone who has a stake in this decision to weigh in and ensure that administration and whoever takes Sodexho's place observes the values of the PSU community. This is not a rumor. An official PSU administration announcement will be coming at any time. This is our opportunity to influence the food service change that we want to see!
