In the early hours of Saturday morning, activists occupied and shut-down the HQ and only UK freight warehouse of Carmel Agrexco - Israel's largest agricultural exporter from the Occupied Palestinian Territories. The occupation held for over 6 hours until they were forcibly removed at 12 noon. During the occupation over 10 loading trucks intended for the warehouse were sent away. British supermarkets - accounting for 60% of Carmel-Agrexco's total exports - had some of their orders affected. The Israeli government has a 50% stake in the company. Exports include flowers, avocados and herbs grown in illegal Israeli settlements on occupied Palestinian land. Newswire: Israeli Owned Agrexco Warehouse Shut Down | Carmel occupied! On August 18 2006, while seven African American lesbians women were walking down the street in the West Village, a male bystander assaulted them with sexist and homophobic comments. The women tried to defend themselves, and a fight broke out. Three of the women accepted plea offers and the other four received sentences of up to 11 years in prison. Anatomy of a Successful Antiwar Movement, 24.06.2008 14:09 This summer there will be a National Assembly to End the Iraq War and Occupation in Cleveland, Ohio (http://natassembly.org). One of the main goals of the assembly will be to lay the groundwork for mass action against the war. At first glance, 2008 seems like an unlikely year to jump start a sluggish antiwar movement. With the elections this fall, the political pressure to line up behind the Democratic Party’s slate of candidates is already peeling away our fair weather friends from those of us who are serious about building an independent antiwar movement. I-Witness Video's '04 RNC Protest Footage Subpoenaed by NYC Government, 23.06.2008 12:10 I-Witness Video, which documented the police at the 2004 Republican National Convention along with the National Lawyers Guild, has received two subpoenas from the City of New York in connection with civil lawsuits related to the RNC arrests. The subpoenas are so broad that we believe the City's true motivation is not defending themselves from lawsuits about false arrests, but rather intelligence-gathering. We have moved to quash the subpoenas and are fighting their demand to turn over the names of individual videographers. Palestinians Use Video Cameras To Document Attacks By Settlers, 23.06.2008 04:34 Video cameras have become a crucial way for Palestinians to document the daily harassment inflicted on them by Israeli settlers. In one recent example, a Palestinian family living on the southern hills of Al-Halil, was attacked by four settlers armed with baseball bats while farming their land. The video provided evidence against two settlers, who were arrested by the Israeli police. Philadelphia Activists Still Homeless After Arrests and Seizure of Home, 23.06.2008 03:09
On June 13, 2008, police entered a home in North Philadelphia without warrant and arrested its four residents, whose recent community activities included petitioning against police brutality and new police surveillance cameras in their community. One of the arrestees, Jen Rock recounts that police "said they were responding to a complaint about 'trespassing in an abandoned building'. We have lived in our home for almost 4 years." Read Report Local writer Jeff Rousset summarizes the weeks events and argues that these recent incidents further reveal "the consistent dedication of the Philadelphia Police Department to squash dissent by any means necessary." I interviewed Clifton in the neighborhood near where he was assaulted on Saturday 6-12-08. He told me on camera how he was assaulted by two assholes coming out of a bar on SE 48 and Belmont street here in Portland Oregon around 7pm at night. This happened as he was waiting for a bus to go to work on an evening shift...the job he lost due to be taken to jail and missing work. Force-Fed Ducks, Ten-01 Sucks: Foie Gras Protest Report, 22.06.2008 18:39
On Friday night, June 20, a group of about a dozen protesters headed to the restaurant Ten-01, at 1001 NW Couch. The owner of this restaurant (who ironically also owns the veg restaurant Nutshell) had previously told protesters in person that he would take foie gras off the menu and never serve it again - at which point an earlier protest was cancelled, and protesters with signs in hand walked away from the establishment. However, he has once again put it on the menu.
