Guatemala City -- October 7, 2008.- The Social Forum of the Americas has begun, with most of the nearly 2000 participants arriving today. The registration process begun normally while switching from an automated system to a manual one. All the packets and a beautiful bag where distributed to each registered delegate. There was not doubt here that Spanish is the official language of the forum. The other undisputed presence is that of the Mayan people. In fact, their presence has been felt not only in numbers, but also in spiritual influence. Mayan religious ceremonies have gone on at dawn and sundown.

A record television audience of almost 70 million people viewed the vice-presidential debate last Thursday night at Washington University's Athletic Complex in St. Louis. But nearly a mile out of view of the complex lay an example of what corporations, the media, and the state have together tried to quell in increasingly forceful ways: public dissent.
Over one hundred workers, activists, students, veterans and families gathered in Northmoor park near campus to voice alternatives to the candidates' discussion of abstract policy issues. Activist groups Instead of War, Code Pink, and Veterans for Peace organized the protest to highlight the narrow scope of the debate, and to expose the carefully mediated lack of public access to discussions of public policy. About 100 people attended a Rally on the steps of the Capital building in Olympia Washington today, October 6, 2008, urging Governor Chris Gregoire to mount a legal challenge to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's (FERC) approval of the Bradwood Liquefied Natural Gas terminal. The Rally was moderated by Dan Serres of Columbia Riverkeeper, who introduced a wide variety of speakers. Speakers included, from Washington State government, Rep. Dean Takko from Southern Oregon and Jay Manning, Director of Washington Department of Ecology. From Washington State citizen organizations concerned about the detrimental effects of the proposal were Ruby Wolf of the Cascade chapter of the Sierra Club, George Exum of Wahkiakum Friends of the Columbia River, Gerald Pollet, Seattle City Light Study Group and Gail, a forest land owner.
Also speaking were Monica of Rising Tide North America and Olivia Schmidt from the Columbia River Clean Energy Coalition.

Makah Grandmothers are walking from Neah Bay Washington to Arizona to bring awareness to issues that are impacting them and generations to come. Please come to Holiday Park (in front of Lloyd Center) to greet them as they arrive in Portland. PORT ANGELES — The grandmothers want their grandchildren to know when they see injustice, when someone tries to keep them quiet, they must speak out.
And if that doesn't work, walk out.
Which is what the three grandmothers, Makah tribal members from Neah Bay, did at 4 a.m. Wednesday.
Dotti Chamblin, Gail Adams and Rhonda Markishtum, whose ages total 181 years, began a 330-mile trek to Portland, Ore., with a walk into the early morning fog over the Makah Reservation.
They arrived in Port Angeles shortly before noon Wednesday and went to U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks' office at 322 E. Fifth St. to deliver a letter.
Dicks, the Democrat from Belfair who represents the 6th Congressional District, sits on the Appropriation subcommittee for the Department of the Interior, which oversees the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
The grandmothers' letter — four pages, single-spaced and containing their phone numbers — calls for better health care for Native Americans and better care for the land and waters that sustain them.
Treaty rights-
The letter also decries what the grandmothers believe are ongoing violations of Native American treaty rights.
Tribes in the 19th century signed pacts trading their lands for basic human rights, including hunting and fishing in designated places.
Such treaties are protected by the Constitution, Chamblin said, yet too many times over the decades, they have not been honored.
Among the treaty violations, the grandmothers believe, is the case of the five Makah men who hunted and killed a gray whale in the Strait of Juan de Fuca on Sept. 7, 2007.
The five were charged with violating the Marine Mammal Protection Act, a federal offense.

Grand juries are one of the good intentions paving the road to our current legal system. Unlike a trial jury, which decides whether a suspect is guilty, a grand jury merely decides whether there's probable cause to prosecute a suspect on felony charges. The goal was to create a filter to catch unjustified felony cases and stop them at an early stage, so that the suspect wouldn't be wrongfully prosecuted (and have to spend unnecessary time in jail and unnecessary money on lawyers). But it all went very wrong.

In Auckland and Hamilton low-paid workers at McDonald's and the Farmers department store are striking and protesting for better pay and working conditions. The strikes started on September 19th with workers working out of Otara McDonald's, to be accompanied on the picket line by a giant inflatable rat. October 3 saw staff at six different McDonald's walk out, five in Auckland and one in Hamilton. The striking workers at the Auckland Airport McDonald's travelled into the city to support strikers at two other stores, while when the Hamilton strikers left their store, only managers specially brought the 130km down from Auckland were left to run the store. During these strikes, which lasted for several hours or longer, many customers left without food rather than cross the picket lines.

Sarah Palin flew into San Francisco to attend a GOP fundraiser October 5. Several hundred angry protestors gathered in front of the Hyatt-Regency Hotel in Burlingame, adjacent to the San Francisco airport, to demonstrate their displeasure with the GOP platform. Palin's motorcade arrived at the Hyatt-Regency in Burlingame at about 11:00am though she was scheduled to speak to a fundraising brunch at 10:30am. Following the vice-presidential candidate's recent debate with Democratic candidate Joe Biden and her attacks on Obama's character made at a speech in Carson, California on October 4th, many protestors' signs referred to Palin as an outright liar.
