Griechenland: Das Land steht in Flammen

Griechenland steht in Flammen: Statisten, Kapitalisten, Mord!

You Greek leftists are hilarious

BetaProspekt 29.Aug.2007 05:56

Seriously, to turn the Greek forest fires as platform for your leftist ideas is hysterical and histrionic. Do you honestly think that if Greece was a Socialist "people's republic" that arsonsists wouldn't have started those fires? Guess what. People start fires. They start them because they are bored or mentally disturbed. What the fuck does Capitalism have to do with anything?

building boom?

fnl 29.Aug.2007 18:41

Apart from not wanting to comment on your choice of wording, I'd like to give you an explanation for this phenomena: it's not linked to right or left wing politics although, it only has one link: money. You obviously are not living in Southern Europe, otherwise you would not be asking these questions. Here the building boom is simply the economic rocket making many constructions companies (and the politicians they bribe - both, left and right) extremely rich. They are building everywhere they can, legal or illegal. The dilemma is the following: if it is stopped, the economies of the Southern European countries will most likely collapse, if it isn't stopped, they'll collapse from corruption... What we need is a smooth transition "back to normal". Additionally, I do not think that these are any freaks "in love with fire" - this is far to large scale to be true.

Is there any evidence?

endlessfields 29.Aug.2007 23:54

Is there any solid evidence that there is some sort of political motivation for starting these fires? Even though it might seem in the interests of the ruling regimes that these forests be gone, just because some politicians want the land cleared and additional factors might make it seem "obvious" that there's some sort of connection it doesn't count as actual evidence. It's purely speculation. There's plenty of idiots and crazy people in the world and the laws of probability suggest that it's likely some kid's stupid prank. (the huge fires in British Columbia a few years ago were started by a firefighter tossing a cigarette butt out onto the side of the road!) If anyone has any solid information (or if I've missed a bunch of information) linking these devastating fires to political motives please post it here. The people of Greece and the world need to be aware of the kind of games our leaders are playing. Our planet cannot afford to lose more tracts of forest, or have so much pollution released into the atmosphere in such a short time. Not to mention all the loss and suffering of the people affected by these fires.

you have similar "urbanization" processes going on in Southern Spain. Although
in more "diplomatic" ways.

Theories abound

Thomas Simmons, Kapiti Coast 06.Sep.2007 01:33

Te list of theories grows. Some are phrased as the final and obvious answer but let's just admit we can not prove them at this time.

A1. Politics--it is the fault of the Capitalists. This is basically the old money motive.

B1. Disturbed people--the old insanity defense. No scale is too small, I might point out, for the truly insane. It is a matter of logistics not the degree or type of insanity. If they want to destroy things, then they will do what they can manage.

B2. Bored People--you'd have to nuts be to keep going on such a scale so this is just the insanity defense.

A2. Corrupt Politicians and construction companies spurred on by the building boom--the money motive

I see only two motives mentioned here, venality and insanity. Very old motives they are too.
