ARIZONAMEXICO BORDER REGION: STRIKE

Fighting Erupts Between Workers, Federal Police and Scabs at the Cananea Mine

Miners attacked, 3 seriously injured in latest round of aggression against 3-year strike

Cananea, Sonora - At least three people suffered serious injuries and 26 were arrested when fighting broke out between striking miners and others at the giant Cananea copper mine in the northern Mexican state of Sonora (less than an hour south of the Arizona border). One of the injured, apparently a strikebreaker, was shot in the head but survived, despite initial reports that he had died.

Cananea is the site of a historic 1906 strike that many argue led to the 1910 Mexican Revolution. Since 2008 members of Section 65 of the National Union of Mine and Metal Workers and the Like of the Mexican Republic (SNTMMSRM) have been on strike at the mine.

The owner, the powerful Grupo México corporation, regained control of the mine from the strikers after hundreds of police agents stormed the facility on June 6. (As is traditional in Mexico, the strikers had been sitting in at the site.) The company then contracted workers from outside to get the mine back in operation. However, the union won a temporary court order on Aug. 12 allowing strikers to picket at the facility.

The fighting broke out after several hundred strikebreakers attacked a picket-line with clubs and stones, and then laid siege to the Section 65 union hall together with plain-clothed federal and state police. A coalition of Mexican trade unions are calling for a demonstrations and caravans on Sept. 14 and 15, as Mexicans mark the bicentennial of the start of the War of Independence from Spain - as well as a full investigation into the events of September 8 and protection for the striking workers.

we dont need mining jobs to survive.. mining jobs dont make ends meet. they make enough money to buy a
prostitute or raise an illiterate family.. but, they always destroy the food and water and air supply while making a couple low life industrialists who buy off govt officials to destroy more and consolidate more... to hell with mining jobs and all the resupply of malt liqour, bordellos and drugs accomodating the repressive existance of the downtrodden and disgruntled

Fascism is not the Answer.

A Minors Lifeguard. 19.Sep.2010 03:36

While it is important to make sure the transition to non-pollution is done, this transition should not include fascism which is the attack and shooting of all miners.

What is needed is a re-tooling of the industrial revolution to wind, tidal, and solar power out of coal, gas, oil and atomic energy because those fossil fuels are poisoning the planets livability. The striking miners need a living wage that allows improvement of the living and working conditions, and that incudes the safety committees need for non-pollution solutions such as the renewables and to quit pollution mining forever. The present class struggle at the mines should be resolved politically, and not with state organized violence that destroys the union workers and their correct positions.

To destroy the unions and put in a dictatorship of monopoly is the defacto fascist solution which is no solution at all. The workers need a state that functions in their favour such as was promised by Oberon who got the majority of the votes in the last federal election. The fact that Caulderon, took the presidency shows that election fraud of the magnitude that put George W. in after Al Gore recieved two million more votes in 2000 U.S.A. took place. Such election fraud is destructive of the liberation path to organized labour and the peasant working classes.

Viva socialist liberation. End pollution wars, not endless wars for more pollution.
