Brazil’s third-largest river, the Rio São Francisco in the northeastern state of Bahia, is to be relocated to build more hydropower stations and supply water for industrial farming in an area inhabited by rich people.
It would mean the end of many villages of fisherfolk and river inhabitants and cause vast environmental damage.
In protest against the planned river straightening, the bishop of Barra in Bahia, the Franciscan Dom Luiz Flávio Cappio, started an open-ended hunger strike at the end of November. Dom Luiz is 61 years old and has lived in the affected area for more than 40 years.

I will contradict all the other columns that I’ve read – suffice it to say there are 59 counts and 20 complainants. Yet (here’s the contradiction) this writer sees him as the victim. As I’ve sat in court and I’ve seen the games being played by the prosecution. [How many of the other hundreds of columns that persecute Anand Jon have actually had a representative from that paper in court?
