A Day of Tears: Report from the "sHell No!" Action in Portland

Portland, 31.07.2015 22:49

A report from Thursday's "sHell No!" actions at Cathedral Park, with analysis.

As has been well-documented, Royal Dutch Shell has plans to drill for oil in the Arctic, despite their knowledge that such extraction will exacerbate Climate Change [...] President Obama has given these plans his blessing, as could be expected of a politician beholden to the extraction industries. In order to commit such an ecocidal act, Shell has to transport many different resources to the area by ship, and activists have attempted to slow the process by blocking, if only temporarily, a couple of these key transports. In Seattle, kayakers delayed the departure of a Shell oil rig in June.

In Portland, the Fennica, a Shell ship carrying a key piece that is required on site before drilling can legally begin, docked for repairs about ten days ago, giving local activists some time to put together a response. Another kayak blockade was quickly planned, and to the surprise of most locals, Greenpeace pulled a surprise action a little after 3:00 a.m., early on the morning of July 29th. Thirteen people with climbing equipment lowered themselves off the St. John's Bridge, downriver from the Fennica, and positioned themselves in harnesses about a third of the way down, with ropes strung between themselves. This simple, even elegant, set-up made passage of the Fennica impossible without injuring the climbers. They were provisioned with enough food and water to stay there for days.

This bold action quickly caught the attention of the media, as Greenpeace actions are designed to do [...]

Activists Hang from Bridge in Portland to Block Shell’s Arctic vessel

Portland, 30.07.2015 22:48

A group of environmental activists have rappelled off a bridge in Portland, Oregon, in a bid to block a key vessel in Shell's Arctic drilling fleet leaving the city's port.

"Our goal is to basically demonstrate as much community resistance to Shell's plans to drill for oil and secure new oil reserves in the Arctic," Meredith Cocks, of local green group Portland Rising Tide, told Reuters.

Semi-annual PDX Police Review Board report shows amazing misconduct

Portland, 29.07.2015 22:50

ANALYSIS: Semi-annual Police Review Board report shows amazing misconduct, mixed discipline, little about shootings (July 2015)

After reading the January 2015 Police Review Board (PRB) report posted sometime about July 16, Portland Copwatch finds that the range of misconduct identified is astounding. We also are left with the impression that while some of the application of discipline was appropriate, others seemed to minimize very serious matters.

Copwatch [June Meeting] Analysis

The June meeting wasn't as well attended as the May one, and the IPR and
CRC took way too much of the time explaining how the "Byzantine" system
works. The professional facilitator they hired ended up cutting off one
person who was trying to tell her story. I expect this time will be better
organized as a result.

Here again are some suggestions we (Portland Copwatch) put out before; lots more ideas can be
found in the Stakeholders report from 2010 and the original Mayor's Work
Group report from 2000 (which led to IPR being created)[...]

Humanist Hall Threatened by Complaints from Newcomers Next Door

San Francisco Bay Area, 29.07.2015 22:50

The Humanist Hall is being attacked by newcomers who live in condos built right next door only about ten years ago. The Humanist Hall have opened their doors for countless radical and under-served organizations over the past 75 years, yet now they are being labelled a public nuisance by the City of Oakland due to complaints from the new neighbors. An online petition calls on Mayor Schaaf to "encourage condo owners and renters to respect the social norms of the neighborhood - our neighborhood - that they have moved into.."

Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Fines Predatory Student Lending Practices; Churches and Synagogues Pray for Students Trapped in Debt‎

Boston, 28.07.2015 22:53

Synagogues and churches held prayer services for students as the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau fined Discover Bank $18.5 million for illegal student lending practices. The bank must repay students $16 million, pay a $2.5 million civil penalty and reform its lending practices. The Bureau accused Discover of overstating the minimum amount due in billing statements, misrepresenting students' total interest payments and engaging in illegal debt collection practices. The penalty is the first of its kind by the Bureau against a student loan company. "This fine sends a strong message to companies that take advantage of students," said Eric LeCompte, executive director of the religious anti-poverty coalition Jubilee USA Network, which advocates for responsible student lending policies. "Predatory lending traps students in debt." This past weekend, 64 faith communities from 26 states prayed and acted for fair student lending policies as part of Jubilee USA's national interfaith "Jubilee for Students" prayer event. In 2012 and 2013, the event pushed congressional legislation to stop federal student loan interest rate increases.

Muwekma Farm Destoyed by City of Oakland and OPD

San Francisco Bay Area, 28.07.2015 22:49

For two months, the Muwekma Farm was located on the corner of 31st Avenue and International Blvd in Oakland. On July 9, the City of Oakland and OPD destroyed every single plant, raised bed, and bench. Muwekma Farm writes: We have no specific date for retaking the land, but when we do there will be another announcement. To those who desire a world free of environmental destruction and economic slavery, we would like to remind you that there is an inordinate amount of vacant land in the City of Oakland.

Oakland Activists Accused of Freeing Animals Are Charged as Terrorists

San Francisco Bay Area, 27.07.2015 22:49

The year 2013 was a busy one for animal liberation actions across the U.S., primarily at businesses that breed and/or sell fur. Tyler Lang and Kevin Johnson of Los Angeles recently pled guilty and currently await sentencing for a related charge of violating the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA). On July 24, the FBI arrested two more animal rights activists related to the string of 2013 actions. Joseph Buddenburg and Nicole Kissane of Oakland were charged under AETA for 2013 actions. A call-out for support for Joseph and Nicole has gone out for their court appearance on July 28 at the Oakland Federal Courthouse.

San Francisco Bay Area, 27.07.2015 22:49

On June 16, 2014, during a protest against police brutality and recent police shootings in Fresno, Brian Sumner used chalk on the Fresno Police Department Memorial, writing phrases such as "FPD = Guilty", "Badges Don't Grant Extra Rights", and "Who do you call when the police murder?" He was arrested. On July 17, 2015, Brian was found guilty of vandalism and later sentenced to one year of informal probation, 50 hours of community service, and $250 in court fees and restitution. Brian says he plans to appeal his conviction and sentence.
