Venezuela's longest day: Sunday, August 15 2004

I'm exhausted, and I imagine the thousands of people still waiting in line all across Venezuela to vote can't be feeling too much more spry. Voters began arriving at the polls at 3:30 am today. Some waited in line for 8 hours before they were able to vote. But unlike the US, few voters were dissuaded by these barriers. Venezuela has held what I believe is the world's first Presidential recall referendum. Say what you will about Venezuela's political tumult; democracy is alive and well, and kicking a good deal harder than our own.
