"Women, Girls, HIV, and AIDS" is Theme of This Year's Events

HIV/AIDS service organizations, especially in San Francisco, were hit by devastating cuts in federal funding earlier this year as the second Bush administration chose not to give as much money as in the past. Ryan White CARE grants, which are doled out to the 51 metropolitan areas in the United States hit hardest by the AIDS-HIV epidemic. Representative Nancy Pelosi worked this year to restore for 2005 some of the funding that was lost. She also helped to include a provision that directs the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to revise the process that has resulted in drastic cuts and major fluctuations in the Ryan White Care Act funding for San Francisco and other major metropolitan areas.



ACT UP San Francisco thinks that AIDS is a scam because it has not turned out to be the epidemic that was predicted 20 years ago. They say, "Decisions regarding health issues should be based on a thorough evaluation of facts including the fact that people who test positive and remain healthy vastly outnumber HIV positives who become ill and die."
