Debtors face new threat

DETROIT — With the help of 18 Democrats, including Michigan Sen. Debbie Stabenow, the U.S. Senate passed a bankruptcy bill — the first in 27 years — that will make it difficult for consumers and low-income earners to wipe out debt through bankruptcy.

The bill, sponsored by the credit card industry, is set to go to the House for a vote where Republicans anticipate strong support.

But one of the country’s five largest legal aid providers in Michigan said the bill will hurt the poor.
