THE DEATH MARCH-DEL MAR'S RACE TO DEATH

Today the Del Mar Racetrack should be called the Death Mar Racetrack. In 1998 at least nine horses died during the summer racing season and at that time the track was blamed for the fatalities, calling the "course's surface deep and even". (The Independent, London, August 19, 1998) Since the racing season began this year (less than three weeks ago) 7 horses have died, and it appears no one in charge at the racetrack can offer an explanation for the high number of deaths. What can you do?

The Del Mar Racetrack has been a famous staple for San Diego County since 1937. The Who's Who of Hollywood including Jimmy Durante, Desi Arnaz, Lucille Ball, Ava Gardner, Betty Grable and Mickey Rooney could frequently be found playing the ponies and schmoozing it up during the summer racing season. I remember the few times my friends and I went to the track in the early 1980's, we waited until admittance was free--I never did see any "famous" people.

Animal entertainment for human pleasure has been in existence for thousands of years, and is just as abusive and deadly today as it was with the first cock fight, chariot race, bull fight and yes, horse race. Today the Del Mar Racetrack should be called the Death Mar Racetrack. In 1998 at least nine horses died during the summer racing season and at that time the track was blamed for the fatalities, calling the "course's surface deep and even". (The Independent, London, August 19, 1998) On August 12, 2003 three horses were euthanized after a chain reaction spill took down a total of five horses and sent three jockeys to the hospital. According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Del Mar Racetrack lost 17 horses last year, "7 of them during the races." Since the racing season began this year (less than three weeks ago) 7 horses have died, and it appears no one in charge at the racetrack can offer an explanation for the high number of deaths.

I became a vegetarian in 1991 and eventually a vegan a few years back, and since that time I've came to realize how selfish and self-centered the human race is in relation to other living creatures. Animal entertainment, testing and captivity for human pleasure is abusive, painful and deadly. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that there is something seriously wrong with the Death Mar Racetrack. If the track was in question eight years ago as to it's safety, why is it an issue today? It appears that rhetoric and lip service from the racetrack's administration is attempting to hide what is really going on. I'm not an expert, but I am an animal rights advocate; It's been hot, the horses are overcrowded during training, and are forced to run on an unsafe track.

What can you do? First, boycott any form of animal entertainment; second, request the Humane Society to hold the Del Mar Racetrack authorities responsible for the deaths of the horses; and third, write your local Congressperson, State Senator and Governor about your concerns. Do not allow the death of these horses become another editorial in five years.
