On Thursday, September 18, a group of about 35 people dressed in chef’s uniforms, banging pots and pans, and led by Reverend Billy made their way through Union Square in protest of the privatization of the Children’s Pavilion, the public building located on the north side of the square. The plan, proposed by the Union Square Partnership (USP), an organization of corporations led by restauranteer Danny Meyer, would create an upscale restaurant in the building.

A huge part of Union Square, most of the west side, was walled off Thursday evening for a private USP gala event.

Reverend Billy was one of two protesters to be arrested at yesterday’s action. It is unclear what exactly Reverend Billy was charged with, however a plain clothed officer at the scene said it could be 6 or 7 things. The other protester was arrested for throwing something.
