Santa Cruz, CA, 22.07.2011 23:06

Critics of 'smart' meters say the meters are anti-consumer, a false solution to climate change and a threat to health, privacy, safety, and the environment. The "Wise Up to 'Smart' Meters" Townhall Forum on Wednesday, August 3rd at the Louden Nelson Center in Santa Cruz will feature a panel of national experts who will answer questions on the subject, including Joshua Hart of StopSmartMeters.Org and Dr. Karl Maret of the Aptos Dove Health Alliance.

Good, Lightfoot, Frazier Confront City Newspaper's Lack of Coverage and Misinformation

Rochester, 22.07.2011 15:42

On Friday, July 8, at 11:00AM, Emily Good, Willie Joe Lightfoot, and Donald Frazier met with City Newspaper editor Christine Carrie Fien and journalist Jeremy Moule to discuss City Newspaper's lack of coverage around the issues of racial profiling, police accountability, and citizens' rights.

Good also wanted to question Fien about her unresearched and libelous editorial—"
Emily Good and a Series of Unfortunate Events"—that was published on July 6, 2011. To date, there has been no retraction or correction of Fien's editorial and City Newspaper has failed to produce any article about the concerns raised in the meeting.

This Indymedia Uncut video runs about an hour and ten minutes.

Support the Antifascist Prisoners

United Kingdom, 21.07.2011 22:25

In a miscarriage of justice reminiscent of the Ratcliffe case, six antifascist are currently being held in Wormwood Scrubs and one is on bail after being found guilty of "conspiracy to commit violent disorder". The first trial, of 11 of the 22 activists facing this absurd charge, ended on 28th June 2011 with four people being acquitted, four sentenced immediately to 21 months in jail, two others sent to prison awaiting sentencing, and the other released on bail pending sentence. A second trial of the 11 other activists is threatened to start on 12th September 2011.

The incident that led to police raids across the country and 23 arrests occurred on 28th March 2009 when a number of antifascist activists travelled to Welling in south-east London to protest against a neo-Nazi "Blood and Honour" skinhead gig at the Duchess of Edinburgh Pub. No fascists have been arrested or charged or have even appeared as witnesses in the court case and in the absence of any evidence forthcoming from the fascists the Police and Crown Prosecution Service spent a vast amount of time and resources to press charges which are tantamount to a thought crime and if widely applied would in effect make it illegal to organise protests against fascist events. The use of "conspiracy" charges against large groups of activists — charging them for things that might have thought about rather than charging them for anything they have actually done is clearly being done to suit a political agenda which involves the draconian repression of progressive activists, no doubt intended as a "deterrent" to others. While at the same time real corporate criminal conspiracies are covered up and swept under the carpet, contrast the treatment of the activists with the kid-glove treatment by the state of the Murdoch media crime family, as the collusion between powerful media, corrupt police and the political establishment is further exposed.

New Yorkers demand retirement-fund TIAA-CREF divest from Israeli occupation

NYC, 21.07.2011 16:32

At rush hour Tuesday in midtown Manhattan, seventy-five New Yorkers from diverse backgrounds protested outside the headquarters of US retirement-fund giant TIAA-CREF, demanding that it end its investment in the Israeli occupation. The New York demonstration is a part of national divestment campaign initiated by Jewish Voice for Peace which saw similar actions in twenty cities nationwide marking the day of TIAA-CREF’s annual shareholder meeting, held this year in Charlotte, NC. According to reports from Charlotte, the TIAA-CREF shareholder meeting was dominated by discussions about divestment from Israel, despite TIAA-CREF’s quashing of a shareholder resolution on the issue.

Police Accountability Work Across the US

United States, 20.07.2011 16:29

Indymedia centerers in Rochester, Urbana-Champaign, and Santa Cruz, are critically examining current police policies and reporting on initiatives to make them more accountable.

Rochester: City Council member Adam McFadden wrote a memo to Mayor Thomas S. Richards, Police Chief James Sheppard, and City Council President Lovely A. Warren warning them that the "City of Rochester has lost control of its police force."

Urbana-Champaign: City council chambers were full at a combined meeting of the Urbana Human Relations Commission (HRC) and Civilian Police Review Board (CPRB) on Wednesday, July 13, 2011, at 5:30 p.m. to address racial profiling numbers collected by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). The meeting was the result of a chorus of voices asking for a public conversation about racial profiling in Urbana. The “racial disparity index,”, for Urbana police rose from 1.56 in 2009 to 1.7 in 2010, the highest in the twin cities.

Santa Cruz: Six months ago, SCPD adopted Predictive Policing. What does it mean? How will we resist it?. In addition, Bad Cop focuses on police accountability, know your rights education, and the dissemination of effective tactics to utilize while documenting police in Santa Cruz County. "We seek to document the abuse of authority and highlight the double standard that some grant to those with badges. By documenting police actions – whether they are illegal, immoral or just a waste of time and resources – we encourage transparency and hold police accountable. If you are familiar with CopWatch projects, this is a way of documenting what we see when we are watching."

Justice for Charles Hill BART Action Shuts Three Stations in San Francisco

San Francisco Bay Area, 19.07.2011 22:38

On the evening of July 3rd at the Civic Center BART station in San Francisco, two as of yet unidentified BART police officers shot and killed Charles Hill with three rounds to his chest. BART's police chief Kenton Rainey declared that he is "comfortable" with the shooting. On July 11th, at least 150 demonstrators converged at the very same station to protest the killing, to demand that the officers be held accountable and that the BART police department be shut down. Protesters had promised to disrupt the Bay Area Rapid Transit system's business as usual and BART PR spokesman Linton Johnson was forced to concede, "They succeeded."

Ban The Bag Rally and City Council Vote!

Portland, 19.07.2011 15:51

As you may know, the Oregon State Legislature recently failed to take action on SB 536, a bill to ban single use plastic bags in Oregon introduced in the 2011 session. Following up on their commitment from the rally many of you attended last year, the Portland Mayor and City Council have brought the issue back up and now the local Portland effort is heating up. We have tremendous buy-in from the city, but we need your help to push this ordinance through. We're so close to eliminating this unnecessary trash in our beautiful city and it's time to act.

July 21st - City Hall at 3:00pm

RSVP for the City Hall event to banthebagpdx@gmail.com and get a complimentary Ban the Bag t-shirt! We need your support again at Porltand City Hall on this Thursday, July 21st at 3:00 pm, it would be great to see a packed chamber like you helped us do last year, wearing your Ban the Bag t-shirts! And if you don't have one, RSVP and we'll give you one to keep! The hearing is not until 3:45 but we'll be having lots of fun outside of city hall prior and encourage early arrival!

If you haven't already done so, please act now by signing our petition!

"Grounds For Resistance" Portland Premier

Portland, 19.07.2011 15:51

In November 2008, a group of U.S. Veterans opened Coffee Strong, a coffee shop located outside the gates of the Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington. Inspired by the Vietnam-era G.I. coffee house movement, Coffee Strong provides a safe space where service members, military families, and Veterans can drink coffee and discuss issues, such as their experiences of war, deployment concerns, the hardships of life in the military, and veteran benefits. At the center of the film are the men and women whose experiences in the military and war compel them to commit themselves to help others who are serving or have served in the past. The film examines each one's stories from their decisions to join the military, their experiences of war, and their motivations for devoting themselves to Coffee Strong. It explores how their relationships with one another and their activists efforts to make a more peaceful and just world help them cope with their own experiences.

The film will be showing once at the Clinton Street Theater (2522 Southeast Clinton Street, Portland) on July 21st at 6pm. Following the showing of the film, the filmmaker Lisa Gilman and members of Coffee Strong will answer questions about the film.

Monroe County Legislator Willie Joe Lightfoot Talks About His Arrest on May 4, 2011

Rochester, 19.07.2011 14:21

Monroe County Legislator Willie Joe Lightfoot was arrested on May 4th, 2011 because he held Rochester Police Department officers accountable when they threatened to punch a suspect in the face—after he was in custody—outside of Lightfoot's barber shop on Jefferson Avenue. For doing the right thing, Lightfoot was arrested and charged with DWI, Obstruction of Governmental Administration, Disorderly Conduct, and Failure to Take a Breathalyzer. In court, three of his charges were dropped because he took a plea deal for DWI—even though he was neither driving at the time of his arrest nor drunk. He is a Rochester firefighter, Monroe County legislator, and community activist. Lightfoot is also an honorably discharged veteran.

In the interview, Lightfoot narrates events that unfolded on May 4th with the help of the security camera footage from his shop. He talks about what happened after his arrest, his thoughts on how the media framed his case, the need for citizens to document police abuse, and his current passion—P.A.T.C.H—a support group for people abused by police—among other things. The video runs around a half hour.
