Portland Says: Bring Our War $$ Home!

Portland, 15.08.2011 16:47

Several local peace groups have gotten together to ask City Council to
pass a resolution calling on Congress to "Bring our war $$ home." The original idea grew from grassroots movements in Maine and elsewhere, that culminated in the passage of a resolution by the US Conference of Mayors in June, which Portland's Mayor, Sam Adams, supported. (The resolution was introduced by Eugene, OR Mayor Kitty Piercy.) We launched this effort at the Hiroshima Day event on August 7 and hope to get Council to pass a resolution by early October. This is the most recent part of our ongoing Campaign to Bring the Troops Home.

Mt Ashland Special Use Permit & City Council

Rogue Valley, 15.08.2011 13:05

The Ashland City Council is proposing to give up the Special use Permit with the Forest Service to operate the Ski Areas to the Mount Ashland Association. On Tuesday, August 16th the City Council will be discussing this at their meeting. What does this mean to the citizens of Ashland if the city was to give the Mountain Ashland Association this special permit?

One of the arguments the MAA makes is that it would provide allow them to be better able to fundraise. It would probably also give them more authority with what kind of development is done up on Mt Ashland because they would only have to deal directly with Forest Service and not the City.

However, isn’t keeping control of Ashland’s drinking water much more important. If the city decides to give up the SUP they are also giving up any say in what happens up at the headwaters of Ashland’s water supply. It will also remove the City’s authority to require that funds are maintained to ensure proper restoration in the situation if the ski area closes. There is also a chance that by giving the SUP to the Mnt. Ashland Association this might allow the ski area to be sold to another operator at a later date without city review.

Making sure we continue to have clean, healthy drinking water for the city of Ashland is much more important then any financial liability risk the city may face by keeping the SUP in the hands of the city of Ashland. Not only for this generation but for many generations to come.

There will be a Protest and Permitted March beginning at 5pm at the Ashland Downtown Plaza. At 5:30pm there will be a March/ Bike Ride to Council Chambers. AGAIN, THIS IS A PERMITTED MARCH - THE $130 FEE WAS PAID TO EXERCISE OUR "GUARANTEED" CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO ASSEMBLY AND SPEECH. Yes, the City of Ashland has decided that they can put a price on “free speech”.

The City Council Meeting will begin at 7pm at the Council Chambers on E. Main Street in Ashland. Please come to the city council and speak out against giving up the Special Use Permit.

Birmingham Riots

United Kingdom, 15.08.2011 10:55

Birmingham Riots: August Riots | Birmingham

On the third day of rioting in London riots were being reported as spreading all over the capital with police resources being stretched to breaking point meaning they were unable to respond to all the incidents. It wasn’t until riots were reported in Birmingham however that it became clear that this was now a country wide issue and not just confined to London and, that the underlying issues causing the riots had gone beyond anger over the murder of Mark Duggan by armed police on Thursday.

California Prison Crisis Sparks Statewide Hunger Strike --interview w/ Critical Resistance

Portland, 14.08.2011 18:45

We discuss the recent statewide hunger strike initiated by prisoners at Pelican Bay State Prison. The strike is put in context, alongside a statewide grassroots movement calling for cuts in prison spending to address California's budget crisis, and a recent US Supreme Court ruling that calls for the reduction of California state prisoners by at least 30,000, in response to overcrowding.

RGRTA Service Map Restricts Services for People In Ogden Area

Rochester, 14.08.2011 16:39

Take a moment and imagine this. Imagine that one day you are able to come and go from your home to where you want to go with no problem. Now imagine this you lose the ability to do that, however, you have paratransit services who, with three days notice, will take you where you need to go and back for between $1.50 and $2.00 each way. No room for spontaneity, however, at least you get to maintain your independence, go shopping with friends, go to your place of worship, doctor’s offices, grocery shopping, etc. Now imagine this. You call to make your reservation and are told, I am sorry but RGRTA has drawn a new service map and you are no longer in our service area. You must speak to a supervisor who is not in today, please call back tomorrow.

So you call back the next day and are told you now live in a supplemental service area. You are still eligible for services, however, now you can only call the day before and request a ride. If one is available, which supplemental services rarely if ever are, the new rate is now $7.50 - $8.00 each way. So now, you find yourself wondering how I am going to guarantee my employer I can get to work each day. Think about every place you used to go and now know that there is no guarantee you will be able to get there. If you can, it will now cost you 4 times as much to do it. It is as if the price of gas went from $4 a gallon to $16 a gallon.

Does this sound crazy to you?

BART Pulls Plug on Cell Phone Antennae to Silence Potential Protest

San Francisco Bay Area, 13.08.2011 22:42

The Bay Area is now apparently the first place in the United States to have had its electronic communications deliberately disabled in order to pre-empt a political protest. BART cut power to the underground mobile phone antennae within their system for several hours on August 11th, thereby denying tens of thousands of evening commuters access to broadband internet networks, telephone service, and even 911 calls. The protest BART said was the reason for disrupting mobile service never happened, but Anonymous has since called for an online and offline protest on Monday, August 15th in "remembrance [of] the blood that is on the hands of the BART police" and to "stand up for your rights and those of your fellow citizens."

Justice for Raheim Brown Jr Demanded at OUSD Board Meeting

San Francisco Bay Area, 13.08.2011 22:02

On Wednesday, August 10th, family and supporters rallied at the Lake Merritt BART station before marching to Oakland Unified School District's headquarters to call for justice in the police murder of Raheim Brown Jr. Demonstrators packed the monthly board meeting to demand the immediate disbandment of the school police and the firing of officers Barhin Bhatt and Jonathan Bellusa who shot Brown multiple times on January 22nd, later claiming he brandished a screw driver. The only civilian witness on the scene, Tamisha Stewart, says Bellusa and Bhatt murdered Brown after calling him racist epithets, that Brown was unarmed and not a threat to the police.

SchNEWS 783: The Big Smoke

United Kingdom, 13.08.2011 14:38

AS SCHNEWS ASKS WHY IS LONDON BURNING?

Across the entire media spectrum the opinions are now flying thicker and faster than the half-bricks were just two nights ago. So here’s SchNEWS’ half-assed crack at explaining the recent turmoil on the streets of the U.K.

The recent riots are far too complex for a simple explanation (Maybe it’s just something about Tory governments and Royal Weddings). The facts aren’t all in yet by any means. The riots certainly weren’t ‘pure criminality’ but neither were they anything like a politicised insurrection.

Riots in different parts of the country and even different parts of the capital each had their own flavour. If they had one thing in common it was the fact that they didn’t happen in the estates – the fight was taken to the High St. Hatred of the cops and the possibility of free stuff on a long summer’s evening proved to be an intoxicating mixture. As an aside – both the footage and the roll-call of those in court right now show – this was a long way from race riot - black and white can uniteunite – if only to loot Foot Locker.

Англия в огне

Belarus, 12.08.2011 15:31

Did New Orleans Media Ignore Police Violence After Hurricane Katrina?

United States, 12.08.2011 00:43

Opening arguments begin today in what observers have called the most important trial New Orleans has seen in a generation. It is a shocking case of police brutality that has already redefined this city’s relationship to its police department, and radically rewritten the official narrative of what happened in the chaotic days after Hurricane Katrina. Five police officers are facing charges of shooting unarmed African-Americans in cold blood, killing two and wounding four, and then conspiring to hide evidence. Five officers who participated in the conspiracy have already pleaded guilty and agreed to testify against their fellow officers.
