Letter to BART Board on Police Mistreatment of Journalists

San Francisco Bay Area, 07.10.2011 11:26

Dear Directors: The Northern California Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists Freedom of Information Committee condemns the wrongful treatment of journalists by BART police during the September 8, 2011 protest at Powell Station. The Committee requests acknowledgment of BART police's error, assurances that such actions will never be taken again, and new training for officers to ensure that their interactions with the press remain appropriate and lawful. The actions of BART police on September 8 are both serious and numerous and should be addressed by the Board. Most disturbing are the allegations of ... a veteran Indybay.org reporter who goes by the nom de plume "Dave Id."

Occupy Boston Struggles to Achieve Democracy

Boston, 06.10.2011 14:22

Over the last few days the Occupy Boston protest has made some remarkable achievements. On the infrastructure front, an organized miniature city has emerged to feed, house and provide medical care for campers and visitors alike. Donations of food, equipment and supplies have been pouring in daily. The volume of corporate media coverage has been impressive, and the tone generally less hostile and dismissive than is usual for protest coverage.

Political policing in Birmingham

United Kingdom, 05.10.2011 18:07

The last few weeks has seen a number of cases of political policing and repression of peaceful protest in Birmingham. The first case was in the lead up to the Lib Dem conference which was held in Birmingham from Sunday 18th September. The day before the conference started on Saturday 17th three Activists from the National Campaign against Fees and Cuts (NCAFC) were arrested for a banner drop, which read “Traitors Not Welcome, Hate Clegg, Love NCAFC”. They would be held in prison on minor road traffic charges until after the national Demo against the coalition cuts was over.

The second case of political policing was at the Right to Work Demonstration against the coalition’s cuts on the opening day of the conference. As with last years Conservative party conference the police presence seemed overblown with armed police and the route of the demonstration not being allowed to go past the ICC the venue of the conference.

Finally one of the three NCAFC activists arrested for the banner drop was denied bail and held in prison for 10 days on the basis the he was facing charges for the occupation of the Fortnum & Mason store on the March 26th protests.

On the newswire: NCAFC activists drop banner for day 1 of Lib Dem conference | Birmingham For The Alternative, TUC, Right to Work Demo, 18th September | Lib Dem conference protester remanded in custody after banner drop | Solidarity Protest for banner drop activist remanded in custody | Solidarity Demonstration for Banner Drop Anti-Cuts Activist | Ed Bauer bailed after 10 days in prison

Saboteurs Cut Nets and Release 40,000 Fish In California

Portland, 05.10.2011 17:31

In what may be the largest liberation of animals in U.S. history, nets were cut at a holding pen in the San Francisco bay this week, releasing 40,000 fish into the wild. There has not yet been a claim of responsibility by the Animal Liberation Front or other group.

A police spokesperson describes how the fish were released: "(one or more people) came along with essentially what are wire cutters to do this. It was purposeful. Someone knew what they were doing." An employee at the institute where the salmon were held says he speculates this may be the act of an animal rights group.

If this was the act of animal liberators, it would be the largest recorded animal liberation ever in the U.S. The largest previous liberation was the Animal Liberation Front raid of the Drewelow and Sons fur farm in New Hampton, Iowa in 2000; where 14,000 mink were released. The Tiburon Salmon Institute is now soliciting funds to purchase security cameras.

Occupy Everywhere

San Francisco Bay Area, 04.10.2011 22:52

On September 17th, over one thousand demonstrators poured into New York City's financial district to confront corporate greed by establishing an ongoing presence, day and night, in lower Manhattan. The idea was to create an American Tahir Square on Wall Street. Police blocked marchers from reaching Wall Street, but hundreds persisted and set up camp in Zuccotti Park, now dubbed Liberty Plaza. In San Francisco, demonstrators likewise called for an occupation of the financial district starting the same day, outside of 555 California Street. The SF occupation is currently located in front of the Federal Reserve building on Market Street. Similar occupations have started across the U.S. in Chicago, Los Angeles, and dozens of other cities. In Northern California, occupations are currently being planned for Santa Cruz, Berkeley, and Oakland.
