Two Imnaha wolves get last-minute reprieve

Portland, 14.10.2011 22:52

An advocate for wolves in Oregon expressed relief Thursday that the Oregon Court of Appeals temporarily stopped plans to kill two male wolves of the Imnaha pack. The number of known gray wolves in Oregon has dropped from 21 to 14, said Oregon Wild conservation director Steve Pedery.

"If they carry out the kill order, that's down to 12," he said Thursday.

State Appellate Commissioner James Mass, after reviewing an emergency petition from three conservation groups Wednesday, at 4:59 p.m. stopped state plans to kill the alpha male and a yearling male of the pack that inhabits Wallowa County. The pack is deemed responsible for killing as may as 14 cattle since 2010. The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Department decided to kill the two males after determining they killed a calf Sept. 22 near Joseph.

Right 2 Dream Too opens space for locals on World Homeless Day

Portland, 14.10.2011 22:52

R2DToo is a new Oregon non-profit organization supported by members of Right 2 Survive. Today a space was opened up on N.W. 4th and Burnside in downtown to provide a safe place for those that need it. Portland, OR, USA, 10/10/2011.

Ibrahim Mubarak, co-founder of Right 2 Survive, Dignity Village and Board Member of R2DToo, says "This is a direct result of the government's failure to admit that we have a housing problem in this country - not only has the government failed to admit it, it has failed to act on it." The housing crisis that has come to national attention since 2008 has deeper roots in the refusal of the Federal government to recognize housing as a human right. As long as this remains the case, homelessness will not end and we must explore alternative, cost-effective pathways for those who lack housing or who current programs, for a variety of reasons, do not serve. R2DToo hopes its space and the programs it develops will serve as a model for addressing the unmet needs of thousands of Portlanders and will inspire others in possession of empty lots or buildings to consider creating similar spaces."

Solidarity From Oregon's 2nd City -- Eugene Occupation to Begin Saturday

Portland, 14.10.2011 22:52

Occupy Eugene had a great General Assembly planning meeting Thursday night in downtown Eugene. More than 200 activists and gung-ho occupiers of all ages, a real cross section of the 99 percent, maybe even a few undercover but still unionized officers. The assembly heard about a dozen committee reports and gave consent approval to most of the planning including media, sanitation, food, etc.

A march is slated to start Saturday morning October 15 at 9AM. Final site and time of the occupation will be announced during the march.

For more information see Occupy Eugene official website.

Sheffield Free School 2011

United Kingdom, 14.10.2011 14:35

All welcome to this year's Sheffield Free School event, on Saturday 15th October 2011, from 10am till 8pm, at CADS (Creative Arts Development Space) Snow Lane Entrance, Shalesmoor, S3 7AL (5 mins from city centre, next to "Kit Locker").

This is a Free School NOT of the type created under the present government, but in the long tradition of autonomous self-organised activities. It's being run by the Sheffield Social Centre project, which aims to establish a permanent space for non-hierarchical, anti-capitalist and non-discriminatory activity in Sheffield.

People in Sheffield are coming together to resist the tide of consumer capitalism, exploitation and crisis, creating a space for the free sharing of skills, ideas and knowledge. Come along to the Sheffield Free School ? maybe even to share a skill of your own.

The day's line up includes a whole list of workshops, practical activities, food, film, stalls, fun and friendly stuff.

Following that, everyone's welcome to the evening benefit gig (£4, £3 concessions) at the nearby Redhouse Pub, 168 Solly Street S1 4BB.

Full details of the day, including flyers to download and pre-event preparation meetings, can be found on the Sheffield Social Centre website and on the Free School event Facebook page

Occupy LA: Critical Perspectives

LA, 14.10.2011 08:59

The occupation of Wall Street, which has turned into an international movement, has prompted much discussion about political and economics systems and possible alternatives to the current ones. However, there has also been critical discourse about the movement itself, its defining characteristics (the slogans, the declaration and principles of solidarity, the imagery, the general assembly, the people's mic, etc.) and the role of race, class, and gender within the movement. LA Indymedia has gathered some of these perspectives from our newswire, social media, and the blogosphere and present them here for further discussion.

One protesters was hit in the throat, and another had his wrist sliced open by a policeman attempting to remove his plastic handcuffs. There were numerous reports of macings and cuffs being too tight.

Occupy Boston (including Iraq War vets) brutally assaulted, hauled off by cops

Portland, 12.10.2011 16:44

In one of the largest mass arrests in recent Boston history, the Boston Police Department cleared a park of activists with the 99 Percent Movement in the early hours of Tuesday morning, dismantling and destroying tents that had been set up on Monday. Startling [U-Tube] footage shot by an onlooker shows members of Veterans for Peace, an organization of U.S. military veterans who oppose war, being arrested by members of the Boston Police Department, their flags - including the American flag - being thrown to the ground:

Before the arrests and clearing of the park, the police surrounded it, lining up over a dozen paddy wagons along one side. They told members of the media to leave and not to film proceedings. After a five-minute warning to disperse, police moved in, first arresting the peacefully protesting veterans - who included a female veteran of the Iraq War, according to the Boston Phoenix - and then other Occupy Boston activists. According to Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis, about 100 arrests were made.

Homes Not Jails Occupies 600-Unit Vacant Building In SF

San Francisco Bay Area, 11.10.2011 20:34

On October 10th, the former Cathedral Hill Hotel at 1101 Van Ness Avenue in San Francisco was occupied by demonstrators led by the squatters' collective Homes Not Jails and reinforced by the activists of Occupy San Francisco. At 7pm, approximately 30 occupiers were inside the building, which contains 600 housing units. They report that most if not all of the rooms remain furnished and in habitable condition. Activists demand that habitable housing stock be put into use for people not profits, and point out that enough residential units exist in San Francisco to eliminate homelessness in the City.
