Occupy LA Survives the Night, but Still Faces City's Plans to Evict.

LA, 29.11.2011 01:18

LOS ANGELES - November 28, 2011 - The Occupiers at City Hall spent a sleepless night working to defend their camp, armed with only their bodies and their strength of will. Even when surrounded by police with one small escape route the occupiers held their ground. And as dawn broke, staying in the park past the city's deadline turned out to be safer than shopping at walmart this holiday weekend.

It now appears that the city's strategy for eviction is to wear people down with a low intensity slow motion raid, hoping that most will pack up and leave on their own. In classic Orwellian speak, police chief Beck has said, "It's not an eviction, it's the beginning of an informational campaign".

For the most part Beck's informational campaign appears to have achieved some partial success for the LAPD. At morning light the camp looked in disarray with less than half the number of tents from the day before. The 1,000s of supporters that packed last night's general assembly are also gone.

At this time police forces have been demobilized and there is only a small police presence at the camp. Both sides could be awaiting a ruling on an injunction filed by the National Lawyers Guild to stop the eviction on the grounds that the City Council has passed a resolution in support of Occupy that waived the no camping ordinance and that the mayor can not unilaterally order an eviction without the council's reinstatement of the no camping ban.

Last night was a long night for the occupiers and it is thought than most are resting and preparing for the days ahead. The night saw some creative displays of non-violent resistance with some people taking to the trees in the park, others formed a circle around a symbolic last tent. And there was, for a while, the formation of a human chain on the First Street side of the park. A dedicated core of perhaps 200 occupiers still vow to hold their ground and defy the eviction. Reports from the newswire:

Mic Check at Mid Town Home Depot

United States, 28.11.2011 12:11

November 17th, 2011, was the national day of action for the occupation movement. People around the country came out to take control of their streets, their cities and their lives. In Atlanta, members of Occupy Atlanta teamed up with local labor organizers to bring real talk to Home Depot and Verizon Wireless. This film shows the "mic check" at the Mid Town Home Depot in Atlanta. Home Depot has a history of fighting against union organizing in it's stores and has spent large amounts of money to defeat the Employees Free Choice Act which would give workers an easier route to unionization. Activists have also uncovered a anti-union video that Home Depot shows it's "associates" during working hours to dissuade them from any attempts at union organizing.

This video runs 8 minutes and is a short version of an upcoming video that shows events from that evening and interviews with those involved.

Occupiers Call for All-night Block Party and Vigil Tonight to Save the LA Occupation

LA, 27.11.2011 23:23

LOS ANGELES, 27 Nov 2011 - The Occupiers at City Hall are asking all Angelenos to come to City Hall starting at 10:30 p.m. tonight and secure the space from a scheduled police raid until the Occupation can obtain a temporary restraining order when the courts open in the morning. At this juncture, the Occupiers are calling on all Angelenos to stand with them to protect the Occupation.

Seventy-two hours ago, notices were tacked up around City Hall lawn. Mayor Villaraigosa and police Chief Beck sent out the ultimatum to all of Los Angeles in a holiday weekend press conference timed to reach you on the local evening news: your Occupation of City Hall would officially end tonight. The Occupiers have responded that the City has no right to proscribe the people's right under the First Amendment to peaceably assemble and petition for a redress of grievances.

The current Occupiers are inviting Angelenos to round-the-clock block party with marches around City Hall, bands, and vigils until the space is secured again for the people. The people of Los Angeles are invited to come to City Hall to celebrate and claim their space and keep the police at bay all night and into tomorrow, until the court can intercede. I met Justin James Bridges at Occupy Portland

Portland, 27.11.2011 22:43

On Friday night he was talking into the camera for OP's livestream internet channel, confidently inviting the audience to drop by Chapman and Lownsdale squares the next day for festivities that included a planned potluck dinner and live music in support of the movement. On Saturday evening he was playing in the rain for the assembled protesters on the amphitheater steps at Terry Schrunk Plaza. By Sunday night, Bridges was bedridden at Legacy Emanuel Hospital, recovering from alleged police brutality earlier that day during the final sweeps by authorities of the last Occupy holdouts. And on Monday, he addressed the now homeless Occupy Portland General Assembly in Pioneer Square from a wheelchair.

10th Annual Black Friday Demonstration to Protest Desecration of Sacred Ohlone Shellmounds

San Francisco Bay Area, 27.11.2011 12:22

For the 10th straight year, community members gathered on Black Friday to protest the desecration of the sacred Ohlone shellmounds in Emeryville that were disturbed when the Bay Street Mall was constructed on top of them. The demonstration was on November 25 this year, and organizers of the event hoped to educate shoppers about the Ohlone burial sites, and that there were other shopping alternatives located nearby. A short rally during this year's demonstration featured speeches by Ohlone and Native American activists as well as a representative of Occupy/Decolonize Oakland.

DEC 3: Lary Hamm, Bernard White & Tim Wise convene "CPR" to STOP the Decline of PROGRESSIVE MEDIA!!!

NYC, 27.11.2011 07:23

In response to the steady decrease in the coverage of community issues we offer this important forum. We've identified a trend in so called progressive media that results in fewer informed community voices discussing community issues. In the search for increased revenue, progressive, community media is in a rapid state of decline. Managers and local station boards have decided to abandon their commitment to serve all of its listeners in the narrow and often racist pursuit of a more "affluent" audience... Join concerned members of our community on December 3 for the launching of: Community for Progressive Radio (CPR Metro), an internet alternative that puts community issues, community voices and community people in the forefront of the struggle for peace with justice.

Video: Speakers From Portland 10 Year Anniversary of War in Afghanistan

Portland, 26.11.2011 19:30

Dynamic speakers from the October 15, 2011 Portland 10 Year Anniversary of War in Afghanistan Rally and March. Rally was held at the South Park Blocks, where a large crowd gathered and then marched through the streets of downtown Portland, cruising by the Occupy Portland sites. Speakers addressed the illegal wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as the immoral and illegal actions of the United States regarding drone attacks on Pakistan and Yemen. The many reasons for the Populist Occupy Wall Street Movement were also enumerated. This 1984-ish Endless War is only one reason among many demonstrating how our country has been moving in the wrong direction for decades, swerving from a Democracy into Empire. Most remarks are brief, under ten minutes in length.

Portland, 26.11.2011 19:30

This is the 6 part video set from the 4Pm Chase Protest in Portland Oregon. This is the one where the police ram their horses into the peaceful crowd (again) who were legally protesting, the police shoved the citizens dangerously into the streets. Then the cops sent in hundreds of ROBO dressed Riot cops ... and yelling over loud speakers for next 30 minutes to "get out of the street"? ...So then (next) they start pepperspraying people and hitting them with sticks (and or jabbing protesters with their sticks)and then they do some more MAJOR blocking the street. Then they (hundreds of police) for no reason (?) leave and everything is peaceful and back to normal.

Labor Must Choose Between Occupy and the Democrats

Portland, 26.11.2011 19:30

The Occupy Movement couldn't have come along at a worse time, from the viewpoint of the Democrats. Election season is just getting started and Occupy has thrown a giant wrench into the political machinery. Some labor leaders too are sensing "politics as usual" shifting under their feet; the "get out the vote" for the Democrats may elicit blank stares from the rank and file.

Occupy has the potential to create earthquakes within the labor movement and labor's relationship to the Democrats, if it approaches the subject intelligently. This seismic shift could permanently change politics in the United States, much for the better. Many commentators have noted that the Occupy Movement can be only poison for the Democrats. Unlike the Republicans, who benefited from the corporate sponsored far-right Tea Party, the Democrats have no intention of moving - or even flirting - with an independent movement to its left. Long before the corporate Presidency of Bill Clinton, the Democrats have moved only to the right, with the leftist talk reserved strictly for election campaigns. This evolution is now to the point where President Obama stands to the right of President and arch-Conservative Richard Nixon on most economic and social issues. Times have certainly changed.

Occupy LA Braces for Police Raid this Sunday at Midnight

LA, 26.11.2011 09:14

LOS ANGELES, November 25, 2011 - The Mayor announced this afternoon that he is ordering the closure of Solidarity Park (formerly known as City Hall Park). Standing with police chief Beck the mayor said that closure of the park would begin at one minute past midnight this Sunday night.

Reaction from occupiers was shift, with chants of "Hell no. we won't go" heard when the news reached the camp. One occupier is quoted has saying "They can shutdown our location, but they can't shutdown the spirit of the movement". The Occupy LA encampment is now the largest last standing camp in the nation. There are about 450 tents at the camp now with a camp population estimated at near 500 campers.

Occupiers are now mobilizing in two main groups: those prepared to engage in non-violent civil disobedience to resist eviction and those who can not risk arrest but can provide support in other ways. Occupiers are asking supporters to come to the camp this Sunday evening at 8:00 pm to help them defend the space.

Animal Defense League and In Defense of Animals have organized a march in solidarity with those who suffer injustice at the hands of the fur trade and in opposition to those corporations and individuals who benefit from the suffering and the commodification, marketing, and sale of fur products. We are not going to forget about the plight of wildlife, the environment, workers and communities as the holiday season approaches and mass consumer culture seizes our city. We are not going to let apathy or fear encroach on our sense of urgency and our passion for freedom and justice.
