NDAA: Indefinite Military Detention Without Charge Or Trial

Santa Cruz, CA, 18.03.2012 09:02

On December 31, 2011, President Barack Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2012, codifying indefinite military detention without charge or trial into law for the first time in American history. The NDAA's dangerous detention provisions would authorize the president - and all future presidents - to order the military to pick up and indefinitely imprison people captured anywhere in the world, far from any battlefield.

Community Groups "Leak" Police Review Board Documents

United States, 17.03.2012 16:13

Community organizations Copwatch and BLOCS are taking action against a recent Atlanta Citizen Review Board (ACRB) decision to hide the board's findings from the public. The findings have been procured and published at http://www.CopwatchOEA.org/acrb

The ACRB exists to investigate and publicly review complaints against police. Since its creation, it has been met with resistance and sabotage by local government. APD has routinely refused to cooperate with ACRB investigations, and both Chiefs Pennington and Turner have rejected every single board decision which found fault with an officer. City council repeatedly cut into the ACRB's already bare-bones budget, making it impossible to conduct effective investigations. After being stymied at every turn, former ACRB Executive Director Cristina Beamud resigned in protest. The new director promptly removed all complaints and ACRB findings from the internet.read more

And, on Super Tuesday March 6, from 8:14 to 8:28 am New Yorkers joined to form the

High Noon, & Occupy at the West Coast Docks

Portland, 16.03.2012 17:27

"We can expect cold weather and cops"
HIGH NOON & THE WEST COAST DOCKS
by Daniel Borgström

HIGH NOON is a 1952 morality play about people deciding whether or not to stand up to the forces of corruption and criminality. Scenes from it often come to mind, since I've repeatedly seen people around me facing up to analogous situations here in Oakland, at the docks and also in the plaza.

The setting for this movie is a western town around 1880, and the bad guy, Frank Miller, has just been released from prison. He's a nasty, hands-on, in-charge figure who previously controlled everything that went on in the town. He'll be returning on the noon train, and the townspeople will either have to stop him, or else resign themselves to living under his corrupt tyranny. [...]

I stood there, thinking at the time how much this resembled a scene from HIGH NOON, and was moved to see a substantial show of hands. Five weeks after the attack, on May 12, 2003, several hundred people marched back into the Port of Oakland and set up a picket line at the terminal where people had been attacked and injured. Thus the First Amendment rights of the community were reaffirmed; it was an amazing experience, an amazing day to be alive. [...]

"We can expect cold weather and cops," Barucha Peller told a meeting in Oakland on the eve of our expected departure. Snow was reportedly on the ground in Longview. People shivered visibly at the very thought of going north to do battle in snow, slush and freezing rain, but nobody seemed to be backing out either. 150 from the Bay Area had so far signed up for the caravan, and the list was growing. Then, came the news: EGT, the shipping company, had given in and signed a contract that the dockworkers of Local 21 found acceptable.

В офисе Stora Enso Poland S.A.

No New Nukes: Protest at Hinkley Point

United Kingdom, 15.03.2012 17:10

Around 1000 people converged on Hinkley Point in west Somerset on the weekend of 10th-11th March 2012 to mark one year since the earthquake, tsunami and start of the Fukushima nuclear crisis in Japan, and to demand that the UK abandon its plans for new nuclear power stations at Hinkley and up to seven other sites in England and Wales. The weekend involved a rally and 'surround the power station' action, followed by a 24-hour blockade of the entrance to the existing power station. People came from all over England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Ireland, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany and Taiwan; and, notably, a number of individuals from Japan took part, including a pair of Fukushima evacuees and a Buddhist monk and nun. Speakers included Green party leader Caroline Lucas MP; environmentalist Jonathon Porritt; Kate Hudson, General Secretary of Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament; Steve Mitchell from the French Nuclear Phase-Out Network; and local anti-nuclear activist Nikki Clark; with musical entertainment from Somerset-based activist folk band Seize the Day, and words of encouragement from the band's lead singer, Theo Simon, who had helped occupy the recently-evicted Langborough Barn.

Theo led demonstrators on a tour of the land EDF plans to begin clearing and excavating later this month. Allegedly inaccurate signs marking sections of the land as part of the Hinkley B nuclear licensed site were removed, with other signs being defaced, and double harris fencing around the recently-evicted Langborough Barn being torn down. Security for EDF tried to evict people parked and camping overnight in the designated car park, before eventually retreating after heated words with some of the organisers. Around 100 people stayed on for the blockade, with over 60 still in place by 9am on Sunday, and others joining later in the morning.

Shortly after 1pm on Sunday, the Buddhist monk and nun led a procession to the beach to float lanterns in memory of the many thousands of victims of the earthquake and tsunami, and present and future victims of fall-out from the triple meltdown at Fukushima. The blockade ended with a closing circle at 3pm. One man was arrested late on Sunday afternoon, after most people had left, for allegedly stealing a sign. This was the only known arrest over the course of the weekend, with police adopting a largely 'hands off' approach to the weekend's demonstrations.

School Officials Use Force, and Police, to Thwart Student Walkout

DC, 15.03.2012 07:38

“I will not discuss the suspensions in this forum,” Northwestern High School Principal Edgar Batenga said Monday evening at a town hall at the Hyattsville school. Batenga gave five-day suspensions to four students, and possibly shorter suspensions to others, for their alleged role in organizing an attempted walkout on March 1, which was billed as a National Day of Action to Defend Public Education. A flier entitled “The Students Are Angry!” listed some of the students’ concerns which led to their walkout: unsanitary conditions and food; large class sizes, commonly with 40-plus students; poor teacher pay and treatment, especially regarding the deportation of Filipino teachers; underfunded programs such as band and ESOL; and an overall environment where “students have pretty much no say in educational policies.”
