Indybay Journalists Charged with Felony

NYC, 22.03.2012 22:11

Viewpoint Discrimination and Selective Prosecution at Work in Charges Against Independent Journalists

Santa Cruz County District Attorney Bob Lee has embarked on a full frontal assault against independent media in Santa Cruz by including four regular contributors to the independent news website Indybay.org amongst the eleven people charged with multiple felonies and misdemeanors after the occupation of a vacant bank building on November 30th, 2011. District Attorney Lee apparently believes it is his duty to dictate how events such as the occupation of the vacant bank at 75 River Street should be reported on by the media, and if he does not approve of the coverage, then journalists risk the DA bringing charges against them. Indybay Journalists Charged with Felony: Conspiracy to Make Media

LA, 22.03.2012 16:47

SANTA CRUZ, CA - District Attorney Bob Lee has embarked on a full frontal assault against independent media in Santa Cruz by including four regular contributors to the independent news website Indybay.org amongst the eleven people charged with multiple felonies and misdemeanors after the occupation of a vacant bank building on November 30th, 2011. Bradley Stuart Allen and Alex Darocy are Indybay photojournalists and Indybay editors who were reporting on the occupation. No charges nor arrests were made at the time, but warrants were issued over two months later on February 8th, 2012 for Bradley, Alex, and nine other individuals. Alex was arrested at his home before he could submit to the surprise warrant. Bradley and Alex were originally charged with felony vandalism, felony conspiracy, and two counts of misdemeanor trespass, but after a three-day preliminary hearing starting March 13th the felony vandalism charge against both was dropped. Alex and Bradley remain out of police custody on their own recognizance.Full Story: Indybay Journalists Charged with Felony: Conspiracy to Make Media by the Indybay Collective

Indybay Journalists Charged with Felony: Conspiracy to Make Media

Portland, 22.03.2012 16:10

SANTA CRUZ, CA ? District Attorney Bob Lee has embarked on a full frontal assault against independent media in Santa Cruz by including four regular contributors to the independent news website Indybay.org amongst the eleven people charged with multiple felonies and misdemeanors after the occupation of a vacant bank building on November 30th, 2011. District Attorney Lee apparently believes it is his duty to dictate how events such as the occupation of the vacant bank at 75 River Street should be reported on by the media, and if he does not approve of the coverage, then journalists risk the DA bringing charges against them.

Bradley Stuart Allen and Alex Darocy are Indybay photojournalists and Indybay editors who were reporting on the occupation. No charges nor arrests were made at the time, but warrants were issued over two months later on February 8th, 2012 ? for Bradley, Alex, and nine other individuals. Alex and Bradley remain out of police custody on their own recognizance. [...]

Conspiracy to Make Media

As for the most serious remaining charge, felony conspiracy, District Attorney Lee has offered absolutely no supporting evidence of a criminal collusion. The DA has not argued that Alex and Bradley had prior knowledge that the building would be occupied. The DA simply asserts that the mere act of newsgathering at an announced demonstration, which turned into an unannounced building occupation, constitutes felony conspiracy to promote trespass and vandalism. In the same preliminary hearing supplemental brief referenced above, the DA wrote: "The defendants' presence and postings... aided and abetted the organization's occupation of the property." From this, District Attorney Lee takes another leap by claiming that Bradley and Alex "effectively serv[ed] as the media arm of the organization; the group's propagandists." The "conspiracy" is nothing more than reporting on a newsworthy event.

Hello, reader/activist! The journal now probably will be published once in half a year, because each release is now required the involvement of lots of people and maximum work from each one, and doing it in shorter period of time would signify that we do not do anything else, but that’s not true. A huge number of events all over the world had happened recently, in which punks do nothing — well, just not allowed. I am glad that the amount of such events has increased, and whether or not the outcome please — is entirely dependent on our participation.

Justice for Trayvon

DC, 21.03.2012 18:08

Last month George Zimmerman, (who law enforcement expert Rod Wheeler thought to be drunk at the time of the incident), maliciously stalked and gunned down a 17-year-old boy named Trayvon Martin. 911 callers reported that Trayvon was screaming for help and pleading for his life. […] *According to an article from Dissenting Justice and WFTV, the officer (Raimondo) involved had a history of racist behavior. Raimondo previously failed to arrest a white man who severely beat a homeless Black man in Florida. *Basically, this dude Zimmerman murdered an innocent young man and disrupted an entire community. To date, Trayvon Martin has not received justice. Neighbors testified that Zimmerman was “fixated…on young, black males.” Honestly, until we go Nat Turner on the proper parties, this will not stop. I hope yall didn’t think Obeezy was going to protect us from racism. Full article Dissenting Justice | Sorry, Trayvon Martin: They Just Don't Like You (UPDATED)

Portland Solidarity Network protest against unfair eviction

Portland, 21.03.2012 15:49

On Wednesday, March 21st at 12 noon, members of the community and the Portland Solidarity Network, with and on behalf of Gary and Julie Frost, will be holding another picket outside the Home Forward offices at 135 SW Ash Street. The picket is part of the Solidarity Network's current campaign, Home Forward is Home Backward ( http://www.HomeForwardisHomeBackward.org), which is fighting to stop Home Forward from unfairly evicting the Frosts from their apartment in the Humboldt Gardens. This week's picket is one in a series of actions designed to tell Home Forward's management' that their residents and the community at-large will not accept mistreatment and retaliatory evictions.

Campaign volunteers, alongside individual community members, have been working overtime - on their own time - since the Frosts were given a ninety-day eviction notice in January. This is the third consecutive weekly picket at the downtown offices, and just one of many escalating actions that will be taken until Home Forward withdraws the eviction and allows the Frosts to remain in their apartment and/or provides them alternative suitable Section 8-compliant housing.[...]

City-wide boycott of FreshDirect launched by South Bronx residents

NYC, 20.03.2012 22:48

FreshDirect proposes to use nearly $130 million in public subsidies to move its headquarters to public waterfront land in the South Bronx, bringing upwards of 2,000 daily vehicle trips through a neighborhood with asthma hospitalization rates five times the national average. The company, by its own analysis, is able to stay and expand in its current Long Island City location, which would be less expensive than moving to the Bronx. The move to the South Bronx would entail building next to a waste transfer station and on land documented with evidence of a Native American settlement and burial ground. New Yorkers are dismayed that city, state and borough leaders would subsidize FreshDirect’s loud, inefficient, idling trucks that overburden New York City streets, particularly given the company’s refusal to pay living wages and its history of unfair labor practices.

The poignancy of the maxim--“Violence is As American As Cherry Pie”. Some of us will remember and will understand this adage. This was H Rap Brown’s (Jamil Abdallah Al-Amin) cogent summation of American culture 45 years ago. We can say it again today... namely in Afghanistan.

Global Days of Action to Shut Down Monsanto

Santa Cruz, CA, 19.03.2012 11:02

Monsanto closed its facility in Davis, California on March 16th after 150 occupiers from throughout the state blocked the entrances to their Davis facility at 1910 5th Street. The occupiers reported that they shut down operations at the corporate giant, which produces genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and is notorious for its inordinate influence over the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

G8 Move from Chicago Marks Month Full of Activist Achievements, Victories

United States, 18.03.2012 11:35

In a stunning move, the G8 -- which was slated to hold its 2012 summit in Chicago -- abruptly announced on March 5th that the G8 would instead convene in the exclusive presidential retreat of Camp David, Maryland. The official stated reason is that the G8 sought a "more casual backdrop", though activists have claimed victory for pressuring the move. If so, then it might be the capstone of a month full of dramatic actions and wins for grassroots Chicago activists.
