Occupy Brookes camp emerges

United Kingdom, 08.05.2012 17:04

Since Wednesday 18th April, a group of Oxford Brookes students and supporters have been camping in front of Gipsy Lane campus to demand free education for all, and more specifically and immediately, that the University switch from fee waivers to bursaries.

The camp has now survived over two weeks of extremely wet weather, hosted various workshops and discussions, and received lots of verbal support and sympathy. A letter containing 3 basic demands was sent to the authorities early on, but there has been no substantial response from them, and the group's next steps have yet to be decided.

Anyone supportive or curious is very welcome to come visit or stay, and upcoming workshops and meetings are listed on the blog.

Buffalo Seven

United States, 08.05.2012 13:32

The slow-turning gears of justice have begun to grind the Hancock 33 -- including the Buffalo-7 subgroup of those wonderful individuals. On April 22, they were arrested and zip-tied while journeying to inform uninformed uniformed people of their Constitutional obligation to refuse to follow illegal orders related to our per-Magna Charta extrajudicial execution of human beings by unmanned aerial vehicles (drones).

Bad news, but there is a silver lining in these unwarranted arrests: the anti-drone signs shown for several years at the bimonthly vigil at Hancock Field in Mattydale NY seem to be having an effect. For the past 2 years, the Onondaga Sheriff's Department acted as though they couldn't have cared less about the wording on the signs. Now, the sheriff's behavior changed suddenly and dramatically -- for mysterious reasons... read more

Park Pigs steal 4th Info Tent from Occupy DC

DC, 08.05.2012 00:28

At about 4:30 AM on the morning of May 7 Park Police Sergeant Tood Reid again led an attack on Occupy DC. He alleged that the person standing sentry duty over the information tent had fallen asleep, and that therefore the Park pigs had the legal right to remove the tent and everything in it.

NATO convergence center, resources for progressive civilian journalists

United States, 07.05.2012 20:48

Be the media this May in Chicago: A call-out to progressive civilian journalists

An open call to grassroots reporters: This May, the military, financial and political leaders of NATO and their spinmasters will meet in Chicago. Protesters are coming, too, to oppose NATO’s military agenda and the political and economic agendas of their paymasters. Chicago politicians and national security forces are gearing up to suppress those protests -- an ugly parallel to the lethal suppression of popular will in countries subjected to NATO bombing, occupation and repression. And dollars to donuts, the corporate press will get the story wrong -- and fail to cover the reasons people are coming out to protest.

That's where you come in. Progressive grassroots and civilian journalists -- like you -- will be there, as well, to cover the protests and the larger economic, social and environmental issues that drive opposition to NATO militarism. That’s why Chicago Indymedia is partnering with local and national progressive media makers -- livestreamers, bloggers, print and radio reporters, videographers, photographers and more -- to host the Chicago Independent Media Convergence Center -- CIMCC. Find out how you can get involved -- and how we can support you. Read more.

» Check out our NATO Fact Sheet, a resource for streamers, civilian journalists and independent reporters.

Local Media Cover-up – Hanford Radioactive Waste Trucks Through Downtown Portland

Portland, 07.05.2012 18:43

The U.S. Department of Energy is currently planning to make Hanford, sitting right on the Columbia River upstream of Portland, the new National Nuclear Waste Dump where they will bury tons of highly-radioactive nuclear waste in ditches, covering them with dirt; ignoring the tons of liquid waste which have already seeped into the ground, the ground water, and the Columbia River for decades.

As a part of this plan to bring in even more nuclear waste, tens of thousands of truckloads of highly-radioactive waste will be transported through Oregon, up interstate 5, 205, and 84, right through downtown Portland, on their way up to Hanford.

The trucks transporting this deadly cargo however, are only partially-shielded, and thus, will be irradiating everything in their vicinity during the entire length of their journey. Even if no mishaps were to occur with any of these tens of thousands of trucks, the government's own studies indicate that thousands along the truck routes will later die from cancer as a result of their exposure.

Five of the local television stations were first contacted back on the 19th of April to inform them of this situation [...]

The only public hearing where we can speak out about this and oppose it is currently scheduled to be held in Portland in only a week and a half, on Wednesday the 16th of May, 2012, at the Red Lion Hotel on the River at Jantzen Beach. The hearing is scheduled for 7:00 pm, with a pre-hearing briefing scheduled for 6:15 pm.

Monday, May 7, 2012, Rally with RFK Jr.

Portland, 07.05.2012 07:20

Last week Governor Kitzhaber announced he was requesting the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to conduct a full environmental review of all six proposed coal export facilities in the Northwest. Although this is great news, Oregon is firmly in the crosshairs of Big Coal's plans to export millions of tons of coal to Asia. And the state of Oregon has just a month to make a decision about a dirty coal barging project on the Columbia River.

On Monday May 7, the Sierra Club will join with dozens of other groups as a part of the Power Past Coal coalition, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., and health and business leaders from across the state, to call on Governor Kitzhaber to reject dirty coal export plans in the Pacific Northwest.

Rally with RFK Jr. May 7 and protect our Northwestern way of life from Big Coal and their plans to export millions of tons of coal through our backyards.

Event Details:

WHO: Sierra Club activists, friends, and you!
WHAT: Power Past Coal Rally with Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
WHEN: Noon, Monday May 7th

ACLU-NC Submits Brief in Support of Indybay's Bradley Stuart Allen and Alex Darocy

Santa Cruz, CA, 07.05.2012 01:15

The American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California filed a brief as amicus curiae, on May 3rd, in support of Bradley Stuart Allen and Alex Darocy's motion to dismiss, pursuant to Penal Code section 995, pending before the Superior Court of California for the County of Santa Cruz. In the brief, ACLU of Northern California concludes, "The prosecution's theories of liability for conspiracy to trespass and aiding and abetting trespass seek to punish Allen and Darocy for activity they engaged in that is protected by the First Amendment and the liberty of speech clause of the California Constitution."

Community Members Rally for Charges to Be Dropped Against the Santa Cruz Eleven

San Francisco Bay Area, 07.05.2012 00:46

On May 4, community members gathered at the Santa Cruz Courthouse for a press conference and rally to demand District Attorney Bob Lee drop the charges against the Santa Cruz Eleven, who have all been charged with felonies arising from the occupation of a vacant bank building last fall. Organizers of the rally believe the DA should, "re-examine the basis for the charges, and the Court must ensure that these activists are not being selectively prosecuted." Approximately 100 people were in attendance at the courthouse rally, and after a brief press conference that had seven of the Santa Cruz Eleven introducing themselves, the group marched through downtown Santa Cruz.

May 3rd: World Press Freedom Day

NYC, 05.05.2012 14:13

In December 1993, the UN General Assembly declared May 3 World Press Freedom Day.

The May 3 State Department statement [says] in part: "On World Press Freedom Day—and every day—the United States honors and supports media freedom at home and abroad. Press freedom is a key element of the freedom of expression, which is a foundation for other universal human rights. We call on all governments to protect the universal human right to freedom of expression."

Calling on its own would be a good place to start.

At issue is heroic investigative journalism [...] Dozens of journalists covering Occupy Wall Street demonstrations have been harassed, assaulted and arrested from New York to San Francisco. Societies committing these offenses aren't free. One abuse follows another. Freedom's eventually lost. America is racing toward it.

From Anarchist News: Police raided (Pax) Byran Michael Wiedeman's house and arrested him, detained his housemates, took their computers and cell phones and interrogated them. He has been given trumped up charges. This is a classic tactic by the police to intimidate activists and anyone who resists them. We cannot sit by while our friends are in jail and being targeted by a repressive institution. This is when people need solidarity the most so please come out to his court tomorrow! Show him, the courts, the judges and the cops that he does not stand alone!

Rogue newspapers or part of a continuum?

NYC, 03.05.2012 07:20

Not covering certain news can be as important as covering news. The New York Times regularly gives heavy coverage, often on the front page, of demonstrations in Moscow, yet published only a tiny article buried far inside the paper on the May Day demonstrations, some of which occurred only two blocks from its office. That is simply a different, more sophisticated method of marginalizing a mass movement than the crude, politically motivated attacks in the New York Post.

City of Santa Cruz Cancels Bassnectar Show Day Before Sold Out Concert

Santa Cruz, CA, 03.05.2012 07:20

Lorin Ashton / Bassnectar writes: "Santa Cruz, California is one of my favorite places in the world. It is special to me for countless reasons, and it is one of my favorite places to play music. I am stunned, and saddened that the City of Santa Cruz decided last minute to not allow our show to happen tomorrow [Thursday, May 3rd]. Basically, there is a very vague city ordinance #9.36.010... Now had they told us this 6 months ago when we booked the show, that would have been understandable (it still would have been weird, because we already did one successful show at the Civic Center, and are not going to play music any louder than last time) but having this happen so last minute is basically putting us in a very difficult situation."

Protesters insisted that the war on women is very real, and vowed to be heard in the legislature and on the streets.
