Video: Undocumented and Unafraid - MAY DAY 2012 Portland Oregon

Portland, 21.05.2012 15:04

This 3 video set was recorded in Portland after the permitted May Day march It happens in front of the Federal Courthouse Building in Portland Oregon.

The first two video clips are recordings of the speeches that were delivered from the middle of the street "by those" who would be voluntarily allowing themselves to "be arrested". This was done in part to bring attention to the collaboration of the police and ICE (Immigration) and for the obvious MAIN reason expose the unjust fear of having to live in the dark and to be afraid because you are undocumented and not afraid. This protest is a national movement of voices from those who are sick and tired of feeling like they are criminals. In solidarity and in public, they are announcing their (lack of) documentation and that they are unafraid.

An urban farm in Albany, CA

Portland, 18.05.2012 15:16

For 3 weeks, urban farm activists occupied and farmed a plot of land in Albany, CA. Riot police raided the farm on May 14... The ground we were sitting on would eventually be paved over with concrete or asphalt, according to the UC [Berkeley] plan. The UC administrators were supposed to be the stewards of this parcel of public land, but who ever told them it was theirs to develop? I thought of the 19th century philosopher who famously defined property as theft.

Showdown In Charlotte Part 1 The People vs Bank of America

United States, 18.05.2012 09:34

May 9th, 2012 was the day of the Bank of America shareholders meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina. Between 800 to 1000 people who have been affected by the policies of Bank of America choose to also attend this meeting, but in the streets outside the world headquarters of the Bank. Bank of America is the 5th largest corporation in America. It has foreclosed on more families than any other bank, and is the top investor in coal extraction through mountain top removal, which contributes to global warming/climate change. They invest in prisons, nuclear weapons and other weapons of war, and threaten American democracy itself with their support of anti worker/citizen groups like ALEC and the Financial Services Roundtable which lobby against any form of consumer protection or banking regulations.

At Least Two People Subpoenaed to Federal Grand Jury

San Francisco Bay Area, 18.05.2012 07:19

At least two individuals have been subpoenaed to a federal grand jury that appears to be investigating a fire set at the home of a UC Santa Cruz animal researcher in 2008. There was no claim of responsibility for the fire, and there is no evidence activists were responsible. Nonetheless, the incident became the impetus for the "AETA 4" case, which saw the indictment of four Bay Area activists before charges were dismissed in 2010.

Epistle to the Ecotopians

Portland, 18.05.2012 02:49

To all brothers and sisters who hold the dream in their hearts of a future world in which humans and all other beings live in harmony and mutual support -- a world of sustainability, stability, and confidence. A world something like the one I described, so long ago, in Ecotopia and Ecotopia Emerging....

We live in the declining years of what is still the biggest economy in the world, where a looter elite has fastened itself upon the decaying carcass of the empire. It is intent on speedily and relentlessly extracting the maximum wealth from that carcass, impoverishing our former working middle class... As Karl Marx darkly remarked, "Capital has no country," and in the conditions of globalization his meaning has come clear....

We all need to learn, or relearn, how we would keep the rudiments of life going if there were no paid specialists around, or means to pay them.... survival is a team sport.

[This document was found on the computer of Ecotopia author Ernest Callenbach (1929-2012) after his death.]

The country that said no: Argentina’s path out of austerity

Portland, 18.05.2012 02:49

On a daily basis, we are bombarded with messages in the corporate media that any European Union country defaulting on its debt would constitute armageddon. Greece/Ireland/Spain/choose your country must pay back the banks in full, no matter the social cost, we are told ad infinitum.

Argentina's government defaulted on odious debt and instead spent the money on investments and social services. Argentine workers took over their factories rather than let them be shut. That path was not an easy one, but Argentina's economy was the Western Hemisphere's fastest growing while wages rose and poverty declined... armageddon was not the result. No fire fell from the sky.

Quite the contrary, Argentines soon were far better off by saying no to the pitiless austerity that had been imposed on them.

All Charges Dismissed Against Indybay Photojournalists Bradley and Alex

San Francisco Bay Area, 18.05.2012 02:20

On May 14th, all charges against Indybay photojournalists Bradley Stuart Allen and Alex Darocy were dismissed by Santa Cruz County Superior Court Judge Paul Burdick. The Santa Cruz County District Attorney's Office argued, without any evidence, that Allen and Darocy were "the media arm of the organization; the group's propagandists" for the occupation of the vacant Wells Fargo bank building at 75 River Street in Santa Cruz, while ensuring Shmuel Thaler, the Santa Cruz Sentinel photographer, was there as a bona fide journalist. Judge Burdick saw through that flimsy argument.
