Occupy the Military Industrial Complex

LA, 24.06.2012 03:24

A series of demonstrations drew attention to one of the biggest (and least-discussed) government welfare programs: the Military Industrial Complex. Although Boeing was the main target, demonstrations also occurred in front of Northrop Grumman and Raytheon. By late afternoon, there were about 50 participants. That number increased to approximately 75 by early evening. Most response from vehicular traffic seemed positive.

Emphasis was placed on the staggering amounts of public money spent on weapons (over 50% of government spending) while people here and abroad suffer from hunger, disease, and illiteracy. And despite the huge Military budget, various demonstrators observed that they do not feel any safer. Various participants also spoke out against the current U.S. military build-up in the Pacific—against America's greatest trading partner, China. There was considerable emphasis, too, on flying drones. “We are in secret wars in Yemen [and] Pakistan,†read a widely-distributed leaflet. “There will soon be thousands of weaponized predator drones in the United States airspace.â€

Arrests & Terror at #626 Wilshire

LA, 23.06.2012 17:11

Los Angeles residents have been laying siege to the Central City Association for nearly a month. The people have been dutifully operating within the law, pitching tents at 9 p.m. and breaking down camp by 6 a.m. right in front of the “1%’s†lobby here in Los Angeles. In the day, we occupy Pershing Square and outreach, rest, and build our community. The people involved have been arrested and harassed, and it is escalating each day we camp at the doorsteps of corporate power.

Who exactly is the CCA? Their clients include Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Boeing, Target, US Bank, Verizon, Chevron, Walmart, and AT&T. They have the ear of the City Council and mayor as they push pro-business, anti-people regulations and laws. They are the shockingly overt bridge between money and politics.

United States, 21.06.2012 15:08

Rochester Indy TV interviewed nationally recognized, author and activist Yusef Shakur while he was in town for the Indymedia 10 year convergence. Shakur represents the embodiment of transformation and a revolutionary at heart. Yusef struggled as a misguided youth, eventually being charged with a crime that he did not commit. Despite a nine year sentence, Yusef used this experience as an opportunity for personal growth. While incarcerated, Yusef met the father he never knew, who helped him begin his transformation from a Zone 8 thug to a father & freedom fighter.

Bank Protest brings stories from passers-by

United States, 21.06.2012 10:00

A second large, bailed-out bank was the target of protest in one week. On May 9, MoveOn.org held a demonstration in front of the Rochester offices of Bank of America. The event drew only 15-20 protesters. It was just two days after close to 100 turned out to protest a questionable local foreclosure by Wells Fargo in Victor. That action was held by Take Back the Land, Band of Rebels and Occupy Rochester NY.

The most interesting contributions to this protest came not from the demonstrators themselves but from those passing by... Read More & Video

Father's Day Occupy Action on the Peninsula

San Francisco Bay Area, 20.06.2012 18:46

The first recorded Father's Day commemoration was in remembrance of a mining disaster that brought attention to the plight of working people and unsafe working conditions across the US, when hundreds of fathers died in a mine in West Virginia in 1908. With the holiday's origins in mind, members of the San Jose and Redwood City Occupy groups performed mic check demonstrations at branches of various corporate entities on the San Francisco Peninsula that have a record of anti-labor practices.

National Day of Action on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)

Portland, 20.06.2012 01:02

While most Americans celebrate Independence Day, trade negotiators and corporate lobbyists from throughout the Pacific Rim will be meeting in San Diego over the week of July 4th for a major trade summit aimed at rushing the secretive Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) towards completion. In San Diego and throughout the country, labor, environmental, immigrant rights, family farm and Occupy activists will be coming together to take actions that drag the TPP out of the shadows and expose it to the light of day!

In Portland, activists will be meeting at noon on July 2nd ? the opening day of negotiations ? at Pioneer Courthouse Square. After a brief update about the work of our allies in San Diego and across the country, we'll then march and caravan together to local branches of three of the big corporations that have been pushing the TPP: Verizon, FedEx and Wal-Mart.

Monday, July 2 * 12:00 noon
Starting at Pioneer Courthouse Square, Corner of SW Morrison & Broadway (near Starbucks)

Please RSVP online here!

A Closer Look at One of the Santa Cruz Eleven

San Francisco Bay Area, 16.06.2012 21:46

Desiree Foster, the youngest of the Santa Cruz Eleven, was arrested on February 8th as she and her boyfriend were leaving her home on her way to the Santa Cruz Courthouse in an attempt to quash her arrest warrant by agreeing to appear in court on a certain date. Instead, she spent the next nine hours sitting on plastic seating watching a deputy-controlled television set, having been arrested for two felony counts, conspiracy and vandalism, and two misdemeanor counts of trespass, with bail set at $5,000. Her mother, suffering from cancer, attempted to raise the $500 to bail out her daughter, when, inexplicably, Desiree was released on her own recognizance.
