Caravans Converge on Bakersfield to Press for a Path to Citizenship

LA, 29.08.2013 04:02

Thousands of people traveled from all over the state of California on August 14, 2013 to press Congressman Kevin McCarthy, Majority Whip from Bakersfield, to support a vote in the House of Representatives on a pathway to citizenship for 11 million undocumented immigrants.

Rallying in Yokuts Park, supporters of humane immigration heard from trade unionists, community organizers, religious leaders, poets, musicians, and Dreamers – undocumented students who qualified for Federal deferred action and the California Dream Acts. Then they marched a short distance to Congressman McCarthy’s district office on Empire Drive, where they were met by a handful of opponents of immigration reform. Proponents of comprehensive immigration reform carried signs saying “Reforma migratoria justa†and “The time is now.†Many waved United States and United Farm Workers’ flags. The UFW flags said, “¡Si se puede!†Some activists carried butterfly posters, suggesting that migration is a natural right. Others carried a dinosaur effigy of Congressman Kevin McCarthy, suggesting that opposition to comprehensive immigration reform legislation will lead to political extinction. Opponents of immigration reform carried signs saying “No amnesty†and “Stop illegal immigration.†One member of the group carried a sign reading “Close the border†and “Visa violators out.â€

Commemorate the March on Washington by Demanding Freedom for all Political Prisoners!

DC, 24.08.2013 06:15

As we commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington and consider that many of the problems of 50 years ago are still prevalent, we must also remember that the civil rights era movements were viciously attacked by the FBI. One of their most nefarious acts was an attempt to blackmail MLK into committing suicide. Many were targeted, killed, and imprisoned. Many remain in prison today. They are Political Prisoners, they are Human Rights Defenders, and they deserve to be free!

Tent City Resisting Roslindale Foreclosure, Help Needed!

Boston, 24.08.2013 06:14

City Life/Vida Urbana is urging everyone available to come to a Tent City in Roslindale to block the foreclosure of Olivé Hendricks' home. The address is 21 Pinedale Road. Fannie Mae, the mortgage holder on Hendricks' property, has obtained a court order allowing them to evict Hendricks and his family with no notice, in contrast to the 48 hours that are usually required. Shortly before 3PM today moving trucks and police were spotted approaching the Hendricks' house. At 5PM CLVU organizers texted supporters saying there was still time and that they would be there into the evening. Boston luminaries Carlos Arredondo and Mel King, along with several local politicians, are at the scene or have visited. Yesterday CLVU released the following statement:

Boston Wobblies turn up the heat on Insomnia Cookies!

Boston, 24.08.2013 06:14

On August 22 at Harvard Square, Wobblies, students, radicals, community members, and workers from Insomnia Cookies hit the picket line hard. Roughly about forty people came out to show solidarity with workers who are struggling for better pay, better working conditions, and respect. Many passersby showed solidarity with the striking workers by offering kind words. Some even joined the picket line. When curious people found out about the disgustingly low wages, and the disrespect workers receive, they where appalled. We turned away many a customer at a time when the shop gets increased business from tourists and college students. Fast food employees across the nation are starting to resist their oppressive work situations. The staff at Insomnia Cookies has joined this common front that been developing against very exploitative corporate food chains. Wobblies are helping fast food workers to organize. We call on all workers to show solidarity with this struggle. An Injury to One is an Injury to All !!!

The Elliott Rainforest: For sale?

Portland, 24.08.2013 05:39

Oregon's Department of State Lands (DSL) has announced a new proposal to sell 2,700 acres of the Elliott State Forest, to be voted on at a State Land Board meeting in December. DSL will accept comments on the proposal until September 3rd.

"In a time when the State Land Board should be taking responsibility for the mismanagement of the Elliott State Forest, they are going over the heads of the public and the courts and finding ways to manage our public lands for profit instead of conservation," says Erin Grady, an activist with Cascadia Forest Defenders.

With only two weeks left in the comment period, they have not released any details on age of stand, value of timber or potential environmental impact if these parcels are sold. "They are avoiding public process as much as possible with this decision." says Grady.

Take action! Contact Clara Taylor- clara.taylor@state.or.us at Oregon's Department of State Lands and demand transparency on the issue of Elliott land privatization. Let her know that our ancient forests are not for sale!

THIS Saturday: 50th Anniversary of March on Washington in Portland

Portland, 24.08.2013 05:39

"The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom took place in Washington, D.C., on August 8, 1963. Attended by some 240,000 people, it was the largest demonstration ever seen in the Nation's capitol and one of the first to have extensive television coverage.

With the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling gutting Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act and the acquittal of the neighborhood volunteer in the death of an unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin, we know there is still a lot of work to be done."

Saturday, August 24 (THIS Saturday)

Gathering at Terry Shrunk Plaza at 10:00 a.m. for a rally and march.

Because of Bradley Manning

DC, 22.08.2013 06:15

Because of Bradley Manning, we have Edward Snowden, who was inspired to come forward by Manning’s example;

Because of Bradley Manning, we know that most of the prisoners held at Guantanamo are innocent or low-level operatives and we have the identities and pictures of the prisoners held at Guantanamo who are now hunger striking (BradleyManning.org);

Because of Bradley Manning, we have the “Collateral Murder” video which allowed Reuters to finally find out how their reporters were killed, in the face of years of Pentagon lies and stonewalling, and allowed the world to see the attitudes and actions of the U.S. soldiers who commit war crimes and laugh about it, and by implication, the brass and public officials who expect and encourage this barbaric behavior;
