Ballona Wetlands Again in Jeopardy

LA, 22.10.2013 03:41

Just 10 years after the Ballona Wetlands were acquired and preserved (an endeavor that took decades), they are again under attack. The Annenberg Foundation, which has done impressive work elsewhere, plans to purchase the wetlands, develop part of it, and restore Area C. The latter proposal has been described as "a phony restoration" to "give crony engineering companies some business" and "way too aggressive" for the highly- sensitive habitat. Annenberg claims their plans have been misrepresented, but there was no elaboration.

On Thursday, October 17, a demonstration was held outside the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills during that facility's very extravagant grand opening. Protest signs supported Annenberg's various plans, that include a pet rescue center, but lambasted any construction on or restoration of Ballona, which is among the remaining five percent of L.A.'s wetlands that has not been destroyed.

Radioactive Portland

Portland, 20.10.2013 03:41

Group forming to deal with the issue of nuclear radiation in Portland.

Portland is radioactive, especially when it rains. Using a geiger counter, I've measured radioactive contamination in rainwater 10 times over normal background levels. Nuclear radiation is accumulating over time from decades of industrial and military activity. Some of it comes from Hanford 200 miles up the Columbia River, and some of it has found its way here from Fukushima. We're forming a group called Radioactive Portland to respond. We'll conduct monitoring, share knowledge and take direct action. We'll meet weekly. Visit http://radioactivepdx.org and join the discussion.

Barricades at WWII Memorial torn down, dumped at White House

DC, 16.10.2013 04:16

The National Park Service has once again found itself unable to enforce the Tea Party's closure of public lands during the so-called government shutdown. On the 13th of October, thousands of veterans marched on the WWII memorial, ripped down the barricades, and dumped them at the White House. No matter how you slice it, the government "shutdown" is now turning people of all political postions out in the streets to protest, and things are getting volatile. The appearance of Senator Ted Cruz, architect of the "defund Obamacare" strategy that caused the partial government shutdown was especially inappropriate, an attempt by the Tea Party to blame Obama for a government shutdown they wrote the playbook for months ago.

Why Native Americans Want You to Stop Wearing Those Redskins Shirts

DC, 15.10.2013 04:16

The Oneida Indian Nation has launched a new campaign to end the use of the racial slur “redskins” as the mascot and the name of the NFL team. George Preston Marshall, the founder and namer of the team, "Redskins", was a vehement racist that was forced to hire an African-American player in 1962 when Interior Secretary Stewart Udall and Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy threatened to revoke the Redskins' 30-year lease on the D.C. Stadium, (now RFK Stadium.) George Preston Marshall set up a foundation for $6 million with the qualification that none of it could be used "for any purpose which supports or employs the principle of racial integration." Arctic Sunrise Activists Charged with Piracy in Russia

San Francisco Bay Area, 13.10.2013 03:53

On September 18, Greenpeace activists protesting Arctic oil drilling attempted to climb and establish themselves on the outside of a Russian company's oil platform. The Russian Coast Guard responded by threatening activists at gun point and seizing control of the Greenpeace ship the Arctic Sunrise and all who were aboard. The Greenpeace activists were taken to Murmansk, Russia and held without bail. A Russian court has now charged twenty-eight Greenpeace International activists, as well as a freelance videographer and photographer, with piracy. A global day of solidarity with the jailed activists was held on October 5. Tens of thousands of people participated in more than 200 events held in 49 countries throughout the world.

The Schools Portland Students Deserve

Portland, 13.10.2013 03:40

-- A Community Forum --
The Schools Portland Students Deserve
Speakers: Gwen Sullivan, president, Portland Association of Teachers; Maribel Gomez, Beach School parent; Rose Murdock, Beach School teacher; Armonda Clay, Jefferson HS student
Wed. Oct. 16 - 7 - 8:30pm
Jefferson High School, 5210 N. Kerby (@ Killingsworth & Alberta)

Come hear about, question and discuss the teachers' bargaining proposal preamble --
"The Schools Portland Students Deserve"
which calls for
•Reduced class sizes and caseloads
•More electives, music, art, physical education, libraries, and world languages
•Wrap-around support services, including counselors, nurses, social workers, psychologists, second-language and special education teachers
•Equity in allocation of resources to high poverty schools
•Maintenance of enrollment rather than school closures
•Use of standardized testing as only one tool for assessment of students
•Academic freedom and collaboration for professional educators

Portland Public Schools (PPS) refuses to bargain over these issues in a meaningful way. PPS should continue negotiations without declaring impasse. PPS should settle a contract which provides for adequate compensation and benefits, fair workload and preparation time, because teachers' working conditions are students' learning conditions.

Cops Fail to Stop Successful October 10 Picket of Insomnia Cookies

Boston, 12.10.2013 04:06

Reposted from the IWW Boston blog On October 10, IWW members, with help from Harvard’s SLAM, the Bangladeshi Solidarity Network and the CP, picketed Insomnia Cookies’ Harvard Square location. Ridiculous numbers of Cambridge cops attempted to order protesters off the sidewalk to absolutely no effect. Picketers stood firm in their determination to expose Insomnia’s shocking labor practices and pressure the company to adopt a neutral stance towards union organizing.
