A Nine Week Novenario for Andy Lopez

San Francisco Bay Area, 14.03.2014 23:14

A nine week official mourning for 13-year-old Andy Lopez has begun in the Moorland Area of Santa Rosa where Andy was shot seven times and killed by Sonoma County Sheriff Deputy Erick Gelhaus on October 22, 2013. Traditionally, a Novenario is nine days of prayer after a death. Attributed to the Catholic religion, these prayers assist the deceased in getting to Heaven, and it is the family's way of getting some form of closure and peace over their loss.

"Corrected" Billboard Calls Out Corporate Tax Loopholes

San Francisco Bay Area, 14.03.2014 23:14

On March 7, the California Department of Corrections modified a San Francisco billboard to read, "HOW DO I FIND A TAX LOOPHOLE?" and "NO INCOME TAX FOR BOEING, GE and VERIZON." The billboard was modified one week after the Center for Tax Justice published a report comparing the profits and income taxes for Fortune 500 companies. Twenty-six, including Boeing, General Electric and Verizon, generated a combined total of $170 billion in profits, but maintained negative tax rates every year from 2008 to 2012.

March 14 - Protest -call out- 4:30pm | Justice for Fubonn Workers Coalition

Portland, 14.03.2014 23:04

The Justice for Fubonn Workers Coalition is announcing an action for Friday, February 14th. We are supporting Norma and Marisal - two former Fubonn grocery workers, and their demand for deserved money due to mistreatment and forced "off the clock" work

THIS PICKET FOLLOWS THE FIRST COURT DATE FOR THE LAWSUIT AGAINST THE FORMER FUBONN WORKERS AND PORTLAND SOLIDARITY NETWORK ORGANIZERS. THIS IS GOING TO BE AN IMPORTANT PICKET TO ATTEND, AND WILL BE LARGER THAN PREVIOUS ONES.

We meet at 4:30pm in front of USA Pawn(8001 SE Powell blvd) Shortly after we will march to Fubonn grocery. (SE 82nd Ave)!

Disclaimer: this campaign is against Fubonn Grocery solely; we are not targeting other stores in the shopping center.

After six months of aggressive campaigning, Fubonn responded by filing a lawsuit against Norma and Marisal and two community organizers. A clear attempt to silence dissent amongst workers, who would speak out about terrible conditions, as well as an attack on the right of workers and allies to organize in their community. We have continued our campaign, forcing Fubonn to the negotiating table.

URGENT ACTION: Northeastern University Suspends Students for Justice in Palestine

Boston, 14.03.2014 23:04

With profound disappointment and righteous indignation Northeastern University Students for Justice in Palestine announces it has been suspended as an organization. SJP is disappointed because Northeastern’s claims of creating a diverse learning environment that encourages the free exchange of ideas and promotes Academic Freedom are impossible to reconcile with the university’s decision to suppress our speech and suspend our political group. As if banning our activities from campus and denying us all use of campus resources wasn’t outrageous enough, the university is pursuing expulsion-level sanctions for two students—all for participation in a mock eviction action. SJP is furious to report the only individuals to face our school’s opaque disciplinary process are two young women of color; none of the white or male participants have faced any charges. This unprecedented ban and appalling prosecutions are the latest attempt by the university to suppress pro-Palestine speech, and continues the university’s disturbing history of enacting injustice.

Operation LIPSTICK: A Case Study in Propaganda and Counter Insurgency

Boston, 14.03.2014 23:04

Late last month Open Media Boston posted an article titled Antiviolence Activists Join City Officials To Launch MBTA-Wide Ad Campaign. The campaign in question was for Operation LIPSTICK, aka Ladies Involved In Putting a Stop to Inner-City Killings, an organization that is attempting to reduce shootings in neighborhoods of color by convincing women to stop buying guns for felons (who are legally barred from owning firearms). LIPSTICK is an offshoot of a nonprofit group called Citizens for Safety, who describe themselves as "a community coalition working to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and youths without abridging the freedoms of law-abiding Americans." The OMB article is essentially a puff piece. The author, Dave Goodman, expresses some skepticism about the efficacy of the MBTA ad campaign, but none about LIPSTICK or their mission, even claiming that "it’s extremely difficult to question the motivations behind the campaign." Unfortunately, it's actually pretty easy. Even a cursory look at LIPSTICK's strategy and methods reveals a deeply problematic organization that is likely doing far more harm than good. To see why, read on.

After Disparaging Remarks, Objectivity of Santa Cruz Sentinel's Dan Coyro Questioned

Santa Cruz, CA, 14.03.2014 23:04

Santa Cruz Sentinel photographer Dan Coyro has called members and supporters of the Santa Cruz Eleven "roaches" and "street vermin" in recent public statements, in addition to making comments disparaging the local needle exchange program, and calling the homeless "bums" while blasting their photo on social media. The Santa Cruz Sentinel is considered by many to be the newspaper of record in Santa Cruz County, which has some questioning the ability of Coyro to function objectively at his position.

San Francisco Rallies in Support of Venezuela

San Francisco Bay Area, 11.03.2014 23:15

The corporate media's narrative on the opposition protests in Venezuela is that the Venezuelan government caused this crisis, because it is a dictatorship that has ruined the economy in a failed attempt to impose Cuban style socialism. In San Francisco, activists gathered for a rally at the 24th and Mission BART Plaza on February 17, to protest the one-sided media coverage. Another event on March 6 featured a reportback from Venezuela and commemorated the one-year anniversary of the death of President Hugo Chavez.

UC Santa Cruz Students Occupy Hahn Building for 18 Hours

Santa Cruz, CA, 08.03.2014 23:07

On March 5, students at UC Santa Cruz occupied the Hahn building in an ongoing resistance to the appointment of Janet Napolitano as president of the University of California system. The occupation follows a march to Kerr Hall on February 26, when students attempted to enter the offices of UCSC's Chancellor. Support for UC workers is central to the demands of student demonstrators, and over the course of the recent protests, labor victories have been gained as the university has given into demands by Graduate Student Workers and AFSCME Workers in separate negotiations.

San Francisco Bay Area, 07.03.2014 23:18

At some point late in the night after the Oakland City Council voted to continue with the Domain Awareness Center on March 5 — albeit a significantly scaled-down Port-only version of the surveillance center — a group calling themselves the Technophobic Women's Action Team (T.W.A.T.) staged camover actions against stoplight cameras at two intersections in West Oakland.

Discussion and film screening about Police Brutality. March 8th Red and Black

Portland, 07.03.2014 23:07

Police brutality discussion at the Red and Black [7:00 PM]

Come out to share your thoughts about the police and how we address brutality as a community. We will be showing a couple short films about the militarization of the police and how that inevitably affects all of us. There will be a few speakers, addressing the recent Department of Justice settlement and the "pat down"(stop and frisk) policies that are being pushed into Portland neighborhoods, and other Police violence related topics. We know this is last minute, so help us have a good conversation about transcending police violence. A serious conversation like this is long overdue. Let's start figuring this out.

The intention of the bill is to protect California's air and water from pollution caused by this form of oil and gas extraction. SB 1132 calls for a moratorium on all forms of "extreme well stimulation," including hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking," and acidization until a comprehensive, independent and multi-agency review exploring the economic, environmental and public health impacts is complete.
