Video: Fast Track Is A Flop!

Portland, 27.03.2014 23:21

Rally at the offices of Oregon Senator Ron Wyden, the new Finance Committee Chair, encouraging him to not introduce a new version of Fast Track that could sneak the job-killing Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) free trade agreement through Congress without meaningful debate or amendments.

Fast Track Is A Flop! [video] Fast Track is an obsolete, undemocratic process that needs to go the way of the dinosaurs!

Organized by Oregon Fair Trade Campaign, the rally was moderated by Elizabeth Swagger and featured two speakers who spoke about TPP from the perspective of small business and displaced high tech workers.

Following the rally, Elizabeth and others entered the building and sought to deliver thousands of floppy disks signed by citizens opposing both the TPP and Fast Track.
During that interval various citizens took the bull horn and addressed the crowd addressing the Trans Pacific Partnership effects on national sovereignty, jobs, the environment, cost of life saving medicines, as well as several others.

LNG Opponents Call on Kitzhaber to Protect the State’s Rivers and Ratepayers

Portland, 26.03.2014 23:07

Medford, OR - Today the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) took the long-expected step of granting a conditional export license to the Jordan Cove liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Oregon... The Jordan Cove project calls for building an export terminal at Coos Bay on the Oregon coast, which would allow liquefied natural gas to be exported overseas. The terminal would be supplied by a proposed 235-mile-long pipeline, called the Pacific Connector, which would cross privately and publicly owned lands in southern Oregon and connect to existing pipelines running north-south from British Columbia to California.

Susan Jane Brown, staff attorney with the Western Environmental Law Center, explained the context for the decision. "DOE did not attempt to address the myriad environmental issues with the project," she said. "Instead, other state and federal agencies will examine Jordan Cove's compliance with numerous laws, and ultimately, the federal courts will ensure that the project won't destroy the waters, wildlife, and public lands that Oregonians cherish. We believe it is clear that the LNG terminal and pipeline will harm our natural resources and that the projects should not proceed."

PDRDs - Quick Fix for Police Misconduct, or Counter-Surveillance Tool?

San Francisco Bay Area, 25.03.2014 23:14

In his most recent, January 2014, quarterly report, the court appointed Independent Monitor of the OPD found that "[t]he matter of the proper use of the Department's PDRDs remains a concern.... [R]ecent assessments of force cases revealed several serious incidents in which officers — who were in a position to obtain evidence of the facts and circumstances surrounding the use of force — did not have or activate their PDRDs."

Protest Against Latest U.S. Meddling

LA, 21.03.2014 23:15

March 14, 2014: On Friday afternoons, the corner of Sunset and Echo Park is usually the site of the weekly Echo Park peace vigil (now in its 12th year). This week, however, special emphasis was placed on U.S. meddling in Venezuela and Ukraine. This author counted 25 people (though I left early). Flyers were handed out to the fairly heavy foot traffic. As has been the pattern lately at community demonstrations, a police car was present. (A demonstration against U.S.-backed instability in Venezuela has also been held in San Francisco.)

"Nobody should be fooled here, especially left forces," said John Parker of the International Action Center. "History shows you what the U.S. is about--they're not about democracy, they're about profits by any means."

Event Description Dylan Powell, an animal liberation and migrant justice activist from St. Catherine's, Ontario will be presenting a workshop on the ins and outs of coalition building and intersectional organizing. What is coalition building? What is intersectionality? How do animal and environmental activists build necessary bridges with other communities, organizations, and movements? How do we work towards solidarity without appropriating the experiences and struggles of other communities? When is intersectional organizing appropriate? How do we effectively organize across movements? Why do animal and ecological movements need to approach our goals with intersectionality in mind? He will discuss these topics and more as they explore how our movement can move beyond its current stagnation and isolation by adopting an intersectional approach, cross-movement solidarity, and coalition building skills.

This workshop focuses on strategies for coalition building from an ally perspective within the animal/earth advocacy movements. Specific focus is paid to sameness/difference, diversity of scale/tactics, and a critique of consumerism. [...]

Fast Track Is A Flop: Petition Delivery to Ron Wyden's Office

Portland, 18.03.2014 23:06

When: Thursday March 20th, 12pm to 1pm
Where: The Federal Building Plaza at Ron Wyden's Office, 911 NE 11th Ave

We need to tell Senator Wyden that Fast Track is an obsolete, undemocratic process that needs to go the way of the dinosaurs!

Thanks to massive grassroots resistance, we have derailed the recent Fast Track bill for the Trans-Pacific Partnership! But we are not safe, yet. Senator Ron Wyden, the new Finance Committee Chair, is deciding right now whether to introduce a new version of Fast Track that could sneak the job-killing TPP through Congress without meaningful debate or amendments.

Please join us in signing floppy discs and delivering them to Senator Wyden's Portland office during the Senate Recess! We will have discs to sign on the day of the delivery. Your participation in pressuring our congresspeople to do the right thing is the only way to fight to the TPP. Thank you!

Unlike the world-famous critical-mass bicycle rides, which are more political in focus and sometimes confrontational, Bike Party aims for a festive and friendly ride. The Santa Cruz Bike Party is gaining popularity and part of a larger movement, with the San José Bike Party being the most famous.

The Center for Biological Diversity reached a settlement agreement om March 11 with the California Department of Parks and Recreation that will substantially increase protections in the Santa Cruz Mountains for the marbled murrelet, an endangered seabird that nests in old-growth forests. The settlement requires the agency to reduce dangers posed by visitor trash, which harms murrelets by unnaturally increasing the abundance of predators that eat eggs and chicks.

2013: A Nasty Year of New Anti-Homeless Laws

Santa Cruz, CA, 15.03.2014 23:04

In 2013, the Santa Cruz City Council approved a number of new ordinances that disproportionately affect homeless and low income people. Local ordinances now govern such behavior as "loitering" on traffic medians and "disorderly" conduct in parks, which has been redefined and may now result in a 24 hour stay away order. Additionally, the amount of space artists, activists, street vendors and performers may use in downtown Santa Cruz has been significantly reduced.
