Privatization of Public Resources Confronted with Sit-In at UC Berkeley Campus

San Francisco Bay Area, 02.10.2014 22:51

Uniting students, workers, community members, and veterans of the Free Speech Movement, CPC led a surprise sit-in at Capital Projects following the rally for the 50th Anniversary of the birth of the Free Speech Movement. Capital Projects is the real estate arm of the University of California Berkeley that is actively privatizing public resources, such as in their proposed commercial development of the historic Gill Tract Farm. The CPC action sparked dialogue across campus on how the UC continues to silence students through the privatization of the public university and increasingly militarized police violence.

Two Pieces on Surveillance

Boston, 01.10.2014 23:07

Surveillance // Panopticon // Security Culture // Paranoia Why hammer out concepts--be it speculative, critical, or pragmatist--if there is a meta-authority overseeing it all? Why conspire in the light?....We need to develop dissident knowledge of how to bring down drones, detect sensors, hack servers, distort GPS signals, and disrupt Google by fooling its algorithms. Forget the next innovation cycle. If the common hacker’s paranoia informs us correctly, we lost the war years ago and are surrounded. Soon we will be called to surrender, one by one. --Geert Lovink "Hermes on the Hudson: Notes on Media Theory after Snowden. e-flux.com/journal, April 4, 2014. A culture of security is one which enhances an organization's capacity to determine its interests and act on them in spite of another organization's opposed interests. Corporate workforces and law enforcement agencies both cultivate cultures of security, as do management teams, investment rings, smugglers, unions, militia men, and academic researchers. All of these cultures are supposed to control flows of information (trade secrets, exclusive suppliers, price indexes, strategic plans, etc.) and restrict communication in furtherance of an organization's interests. Among dissident circles, the term Security Culture has been popularized as a response to the absence of organization and shared organizational interests. Security Culture carries a few hard and fast rules (don't talk to cops, need-to-know basis, interrupt gossip, etc.) which have established a rough outline of best practices when daily life and sensitive operations overlap or are indistinguishable. Best practices are fundamental to the Insurgent, who frequently operates without clear structures of command and communication, enjoys limited operational awareness, and can hardly imagine an everyday life divorced from sensitive operations. The Insurgent, however, should not be confused with a dissident or “common hacker,” as Lovink puts it, and the conflation of Security Culture with Operations Security carries heavy tolls.

Plans for Monterey Bay Shores Resort Deemed Deficient

Santa Cruz, CA, 24.09.2014 22:52

The California Coastal Commission on August 29 sent a letter to the developer of the Monterey Bay Shores Resort, Ed Ghandour, informing him his response to the requirements of the conditional Coastal Development Permit (CDP) was deficient. The Coastal Commission tentatively approved the development in April, after years of opposition from environmental groups. Monterey Bay Shores is planned to be built along a pristine stretch of coastal dunes in Sand City, and at risk is a population of Western Snowy Plovers, a federally threatened species who nest and raise their broods in the footprint of the proposed resort.

Wolf Patrol enters Yellowstone backcountry to document and protest Montana wolf hunt

Portland, 19.09.2014 22:53

Americans outraged with the killing of wolves from Yellowstone
National Park (YNP) have organized the YELLOWSTONE WOLF PATROL, whose members have entered the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness to monitor and document Montana's wolf hunt which begins September 15th.

Nine members of the Wolf Patrol are currently trailing hunters, who in the last two years, have killed wolves belonging to packs originating from YNP where hunting is prohibited. Wolf Patrol members are opposed to the sport hunting of wolves in Wolf Management Units (WMU) 313 & 316, and are asking Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (MFWP) to immediately stop the hunt before more wolves are killed.

The Gruesome Murder of James Chasse - 8 Yrs Ago

Portland, 19.09.2014 22:53

James P. Chasse Jr. was murdered by three bastard-ass cops on Sept. 17th 2006. Eight years later, the monsters responsible for Chasse's death have YET to have been indicted for murder. These criminals continue to walk the streets. They are as much a public threat as they ever were!

James P. Chasse Jr. was murdered by three bastard-ass cops on September 17th 2006. Chasse, whome had dealt with mental illness for most of his adult life, was chased after, ran down like a dog, beaten, kicked, bludgeoned, and stomped bloody until he stopped screaming and fell unconscious. He was denied medical care. He was cuffed and thrown in a cell. A jailhouse nurse claimed that Chasse was "fine", even though he had more than a dozen broken ribs and blood was pouring out of his face. He was later taken to the hospital, more than and hour later... except he never made it. He died from blood loss and severe internal injuries in the back of a Portland police patrol car. Chasse NEVER committed a crime. [...]
