Greens Recommend Boycott of Statewide Partisan Elections on November 4

San Francisco Bay Area, 03.11.2014 22:50

Proposition 14 in California effectively excluded third parties from statewide general elections. Only the top two vote getters in statewide primaries now advance to the general election. Prop. 14 also removed the possibility of the write-in option. The Green Party of Alameda County recommends that voters boycott the statewide partisan contests in the November election — specifically the statewide offices of Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, Controller, Treasurer, Attorney General, and Insurance Commissioner — and also most of the other partisan offices, while still voting locally and for statewide propositions.

Chevron-funded Political Billboards "Corrected" in Richmond

San Francisco Bay Area, 03.11.2014 22:50

The Committee for Responsible and Accurate Posters (CRAP) writes: Chevron, in exercising their completely hard-fought right to defecate unlimited cash into a small-town election (thanks, Citizens United), has flooded Richmond with $3 million in propaganda both to support their own prop candidates and to shamelessly attack Team Richmond.... Richmond residents should know that Nat Bates isn't running for Richmond's mayor, he's running to be Chevron's puppet. And so are city council candidates Donna Powers, Charles Ramsey, and Al Martinez. Sorry Chevron, but Richmond's election is not for sale.

My Daughter and I Were Arrested Today By Military Police Guarding Worlds Most Hated Weapon

Portland, 02.11.2014 22:50

A California family puts their bodies on the line, forcing the arrest of a father and daughter who can no longer tolerate US murdering of innocent people with Drone terrorism. [...] I was there with My daughter Mahai'a, not quite 18, and we were the new faces on the line. We are no strangers to protest- my daughter' s conciencious objector file goes back to her crib and stroller.

Soon, after light chat, we all said our good nights and a handful of us retreated to a makeshift campsite just yards away in the shadows of the desert vegetation.

Barry Binks, a Veterans For Peace foot soldier, has been religiously showing up here at Beale Air Force base, east of Sacramento, month after month. With him is an incredible affinity group of mostly Elder citizens, who have been setting up information outlets, banners, signage and even blockading the entrance to the base, triggering their arrest by the MPs. The dedicated dozen seasoned peace activists there with us this morning, I learned later, collectively had many arrests from Washington DC to California.

The primary issue that brings them and us together is drone assassinations but all the activists make no bones about the war machine in general. Beale is the site where Global Hawk reconnaissance drones are piloted from. The drone itself is near it's target, most notably the Mid East through Pakistan where hundreds of well publicized strikes have blown to pieces children and entire families. We recognized these drone pilots by their black eagle patches displayed on their shoulders as they pass through the gate of the base. [...]

SodaStream said that it would relocate the factory by the end of 2015.

Beehive Collective Tour Presentation Banned from Gill Tract Farm

San Francisco Bay Area, 01.11.2014 22:50

A Beehive Collective presentation originally scheduled as an event at the Gill Tract Community Farm was shut down by Steve Lindow, the first researcher to do field trials of a Genetically Modified Organism (GMO), who is now the Executive Associate Dean in the College of Natural Resources. Lindow claimed that the art show was "not relevant to the research at the community farm." Determined not to be silenced, students at UC Berkeley brought the Beehive Collective's art project on drought and Proposition 1 to the steps of Sproul Plaza, where 50 years ago students demonstrated for their right to disseminate political materials, kicking off the Free Speech Movement.

San Francisco Bay Area, 31.10.2014 22:40

On October 28, father and daughter Mauro Oliveira (Red Sun) and Mahai'a Sol helped blockade Beale Air Force base, which is east of Sacramento. They are free now, but they face Federal charges. Mauro Oliveira writes: We want drones to end and until THAT day, my family wants it to be clear to the victims of drone strikes and to the entire world, that we believe in Peace, not war and consider drone strikes as a war crime against humanity and an act against the Creators greatest gift, the Children of the world, of which we all are.

Zim Appears to be Avoiding Oakland Port with Threat of Third Blockade

San Francisco Bay Area, 25.10.2014 22:50

UPDATE 10/24, 9pm: After successful blockades of Zim Line ships at the Port of Oakland in August and September, a third blockade was set to target the Zim ship Beijing on Saturday, October 25. The Beijing was then rescheduled to dock Sunday, October 26, but its arrival at this point has been delayed indefinitely. Organizers — remaining vigilant for a potential docking at any time during the week — have now called for a solidarity march from West Oakland BART station at 3pm, Sunday 26th, as a show of force to let Zim know that activists will be ready should the Beijing attempt to unload cargo in Oakland.

Santa Cruz Police Attempt to Discredit Leonie Sherman by Labeling Her an Anarchist

Santa Cruz, CA, 24.10.2014 22:50

Santa Cruz City Council Member Micah Posner writes: In a shocking campaign development, Deputy Chief Steve Clark labeled Santa Cruz City Council candidate Leonie Sherman an "anarchist" on the evening news due to the fact that she hung a banner at the WTO protest 15 years ago. The courage and conviction that she displayed as part of this non-violent protest are just some of the reasons why Sherman will be an excellent City Councilmember. For those of you that don't remember the WTO protest, Sherman's action was part of a successful movement on the part of tens of thousands of activists in the US and abroad to end back room deals that encouraged the abuse of workers in the 3rd world.

San Francisco Bay Area, 22.10.2014 22:50

On October 18, Eviction Free San Francisco and community advocates marched to the home of Mayor Ed Lee in Glenn Park, and demanded that he intervene in the eviction crisis in San Francisco. As long-term tenants, communities of color, seniors and disabled people are displaced at a rapid rate, new luxury condominiums pop up on every corner, making the city even less affordable and motivating speculators to continue to evict for a profit.

Witnesses Report Excessive Use of Force by Santa Cruz Police

Santa Cruz, CA, 22.10.2014 22:50

Witnesses to the recent tasing and arrest of a man in Santa Cruz describe the incident differently from the account communicated by police through the reporting of the Santa Cruz Sentinel. Individuals on the scene report excessive force was used when officers with the SCPD arrested Oliver Howard near the Court House on Water Street on the afternoon of October 13. They say officers struck Howard with a baton, tased his bare body, piled on top of him, wrenched and twisted his limbs, and grinded his face and body into the ground, all unnecessarily.

Call for Medical Aid Donations for Kobane

Boston, 20.10.2014 23:04

Kobane sorely needs medical supplies to maintain the defense of the city and many civilians. Doctors inside Kobane are fixing up people the best they can, including external fixation limbs mangled by gunshot wounds, but still people are bleeding to death after reaching aid stations and while being held up by Turkish border police on the way to nearby Turkish hospital. The main clinic in Kobane has been overrun by IS and later destroyed and medical care is now taking place in private homes. IS also recently burned an entire supply warehouse belonging to a local Kurdish relief organization. We've formulated a list with suggested donations that individuals and collectives can pack up and mail themselves.

Video: Tiny Houses for the Homeless

Portland, 17.10.2014 22:51

Housing should be a human right and yet is often subverted by the right to speculation. This video of Opportunity Village in Eugene Oregon shows what citizens like Pastor Bryant of the First Christian Church can do. Arnold Kunzli is an emeritus Swiss professor and author of Housing as a Human Right
http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2003/06/266635.shtml

The cost comes down to three dollars a night per person, and one of those three dollars is paid by the villagers themselves. They all pay thirty dollars a month for their utilities, for the water, and electricity and Internet service even. So we are running this facility for two bucks a head a night.
