Independent journalist Alex Darocy, long-time Indybay contributor and editorial collective member, shot several photographs of the student demonstrators from his car as he passed the blockade, and for that he is currently being prosecuted, facing the possibility of jail time. A Motion to Dismiss, which argues that the prosecution is attempting to criminalize and chill conduct that is protected under the First Amendment, is set to be heard in Santa Cruz County Superior Court on November 13.

Marine Life Still Vulnerable Despite Senate Bills 295 and 414

San Francisco Bay Area, 26.10.2015 22:51

Governor Jerry Brown this October signed two bills that will require more frequent oil pipeline inspections and improve oil spill response, but the questionable "marine protected areas" created under the privately-funded Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) Initiative still fail to protect the ocean from pollution, fracking, oil drilling, military testing, corporate aquaculture and all human impacts other than sustainable fishing and Tribal gathering.

Who Runs Take Back Santa Cruz and What Are They Up To?

Santa Cruz, CA, 25.10.2015 22:50

Take Back Santa Cruz (TBSC) claims to be a non-profit group dedicated to safety issues in the city of Santa Cruz, and that they have no ideological direction. The truth is that TBSC has been the grassroots arm to much of the recent laws criminalizing homelessness in the city as well as the force behind proposed RV bans, forced closure and relocation of a needle exchange service, and a stay away order law from public parks.

Kettle Falls Patients Get Federal Prison Sentences

San Francisco Bay Area, 23.10.2015 22:51

Federal prison sentences were handed down October 2 for the three remaining defendants in the Kettle Falls Five case in Washington State. The case has received national attention as an example of federal interference with state-qualified medical cannabis patients, and lobbying by Larry Harvey, a defendant in the case who died last month from cancer, was instrumental in getting Congress to restrict Department of Justice enforcement in states with medical cannabis laws.

После выборов

Belarus, 23.10.2015 22:23

RnG7nF5Wmlc.jpg

Bring on the “Density” – Portland’s Neighborhoods Weren't Sustainable in the First Place

Portland, 22.10.2015 22:52

Complaints about the new buildings in Portland are misplaced. Gentrification won't be stopped without new buildings & some of them will be large. Get over it.

Another factor that exacerbates gentrification is the Portland metro area's urban-growth boundary, which prevents suburban encroachment on farmland and so drives up the value of urban real estate. Ironically, this invention is an example of the progressive urban planning that contributed to Portland's groovy "green" reputation in the first place and helped make it a draw for new residents. Moving the boundary out and eating up green space to manufacture lower property values, however, would be a step in the wrong direction. Portland is not Reno and that should stay that way.

On the legal front, the city of Portland is not allowed to restrict rising rents due to a state-level prohibition on rent-control. Landlords can jack up rates as high as the market will bear, which, due to the above factors, is turning out to be very high. [...]

All this adds up to a bona fide housing crisis, which even the business-friendly mayor has been forced to admit (especially since an election is looming). [...]
