Ella Baker Center for Human Rights Recognizes Staff Union

San Francisco Bay Area, 08.06.2017 22:27

The staff at the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, have formed the Ella Baker Workers Association, a staff union, and have selected the Communications Workers of America to serve as the EBWA's collective bargaining representative. EBC's management team has voluntarily recognized the formation of a union to represent its staff. Both staff and management assert that the formation of the union aligns with Ella Baker's legacy and the organization's longstanding support for unionization, collective bargaining, and worker voice on the job.

Exposing KPFA's Secret Secession Effort: "Big Tent Radio Network"

San Francisco Bay Area, 08.06.2017 22:27

Pacifica Foundation is a non-profit organization which owns five independently operated, non-commercial, listener-supported radio stations known for their progressive/liberal political orientation. Its national headquarters adjoins station KPFA in Berkeley. Bill Crosier, Pacifica Foundation's interim Executive Director, addressed members of the 5-station radio network after it became known that at least one of the KPFA Local Station Board members, with others, has secretly contacted celebrities and prominent supporters of progressive causes, falsely claiming that Pacifica is "collapsing", and asking them to be on the board of a new nonprofit organization which would seek to acquire Pacifica's assets, or at least those of station KPFA.

Black Bloc Defends Berkeley Against Invasion of Trump Fascists

San Francisco Bay Area, 08.06.2017 22:27

On April 15, students, anti-racists, anti-fascists, and other residents of the Bay Area clashed in the streets of Berkeley against an array of organized white supremacist and far-right forces. Trump supporters openly carried anti-Semitic signs, fascist symbols, and raised their arms in sieg heil Nazi salutes. Unlike most events and actions the far-right has organized in recent past, this time members of the Right were able to take the streets in a city regarded as a leftist stronghold. The far-right is now bragging that if it can take over Berkeley, it can do the same in any city. Meanwhile, much of the Left focused on marches around Trump's tax returns.

A Step Forward for the Rights of Transgender Inmates

San Francisco Bay Area, 08.06.2017 22:27

Across California, and nationally, trans people are funneled into state prisons, detention centers and county jails. While incarceration is violent and unsafe for everyone, trans people face extreme conditions while locked up, including unsafe housing, physical/emotional/sexual assault, lack of access to basic transition health care and a refusal to be recognized by chosen names and genders. SB 310 would make it possible for trans people in custody to file for a legal name and/or gender marker change on their identification documents and would ensure that they are recognized as such while incarcerated.

The End of Money Bail in California?

San Francisco Bay Area, 08.06.2017 22:27

California warehouses thousands of people in jails while they await their court dates - simply because they can't afford to post bail. Meanwhile, wealthy people can easily buy their freedom. Research shows that Black people are assigned higher bail amounts than white people accused of similar offenses. People who can't post bail are at a higher risk of being convicted, pleading guilty (even if they're innocent), and receiving harsher sentences. The California Money Bail Reform Act, however, will create a system that prioritizes pretrial services and prevents people from being held in jail simply because they can't make bail.

Famous Herd of Mustangs Faces A Round-Up

San Francisco Bay Area, 08.06.2017 22:27

In an area in the Pine Nut Mountains east of Gardnerville, Nevada there is a wild horse herd known as the Fish Spring's herd. This herd has many bands in it, including the Blue's band, Blondies band, Zorro's band, Socks band, and Rogue's band. The bands are named after the lead stallion. There are so few wild horses on that range that wild horse advocates, photographers, and locals name the horses. Wild horses love their families and their freedom, but after they are rounded-up they lose all of that. When the Bureau of Land Management decides the amount of horses exceed the appropriate management area, they organize the rounding up of the excess horses.

Calling Out the CHP for Hit and Run Murder

San Francisco Bay Area, 08.06.2017 22:27

On October 10, 2005, Diallo Neal was murdered in Oakland when a California Highway Patrol (CHP) motorcycle officer struck the rear end of Diallo's motorcycle, launching Diallo into a bus stop, pole, and concrete bench. CHP fled the scene. After his mother, Gilda Baker discovered that the accounts of eyewitnesses and investigation documents did not match the official police report, she set out to uncover the real circumstances surrounding her son's death. On April 22, Ms. Baker and supportive community members rallied at Oakland City Hall calling for an investigation to take place and demanding justice for Diallo.

Cops and Klan, Hand in Hand: April 15 in Berkeley

San Francisco Bay Area, 08.06.2017 22:27

Since April 15, the Alt-Right has been declaring a victory over antifascists in Berkeley, where a mix of Trump supporters, militia members, far-Right bikers, and neo-Nazis gave fascist salutes, held anti-Semitic signs, carried Alt-Right flags, and listened to white nationalist speakers. But the leader of the rally, Richard Black, a part of the Alt-Right himself, paints a much different picture. Black claims that without the coordinated help of the Berkeley Police Department, who worked with Alt-Right organizers, antifascists would have overrun and shut down the rally before it even began.

Humboldt Anarchist Bookfair: The Reading Rainbow of Resistance

San Francisco Bay Area, 08.06.2017 22:27

Humboldt Grassroots writes: We are excited to have this book fair at a time when Anarchism is being increasingly put into action on a large scale in many revolutionary movements around the country and around the world. The great struggles against the destruction of the forests, the earth, and the pollution of the water have brought many together as a force to be reckoned with. There are many ideas and opportunities that we can't wait to explore with the community, at the Humboldt Anarchist Bookfair! It all takes place this Saturday, April 29, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, at the Manila Community Center in Arcata.

Day of Rage in Palestine as Mass Hunger Strike Continues

San Francisco Bay Area, 08.06.2017 22:27

Ongoing clashes erupted across the occupied West Bank on April 28 in support of hunger-striking Palestinian prisoners who entered the 12th day of a hunger strike. Palestinians are calling it the Day of Rage. Israeli forces fired tear-gas bombs, rubber-coated steel bullets and live fire, during the clashes, which broke out following Friday prayers in cities, villages and refugee camps in various districts of the West Bank. Numerous Palestinians were injured. Detainees started their hunger strike on April 17th, which also marks the Palestinian Prisoners' Day, demanding basic, internationally-guaranteed rights.

Affordable Housing Crisis in Sonoma County

San Francisco Bay Area, 08.06.2017 22:27

The bay area's affordable housing crisis continues to expand, and students at Sonoma Student University are trying to cope with the implications. Kendyl Saxby writes: Sonoma County is in a rent crisis that is negatively effecting everyone and it is only growing. People are stuck living in squalor due to the 1% vacancy rate in Santa Rosa. Families can no longer afford extracurricular activities for their children. College students cannot afford rent and end up living at home with their parents or homeless. Employers are losing workers who can no longer afford to live here.

Reclaim Our Democracy from the Oil Industry

San Francisco Bay Area, 08.06.2017 22:27

California is often portrayed as the nation's "green leader," but the reality is much different. Over the 2015-2016 Legislative Session, the oil industry spent a historic $36.1 million to lobby California lawmakers. During the last six years, the industry has spent $122 million in Sacramento, more than any other interest group. "This spending spree has paid huge dividends for these companies, allowing them to dismantle and crush any meaningful legislation that might significantly curb their power to drill and pollute in California," said David Braun of Rootskeeper. Braun urged people to join a diverse array of activists on Saturday, May 20 for a march and rally in Sacramento.

Standing Rock Copwatchers in the Bay Area

San Francisco Bay Area, 08.06.2017 22:27

Standing Rock Copwatchers write: In 2016, we left our families, our homes, our lives to go defend the water at Standing Rock, North Dakota. We stood in struggle with hundreds of tribes from across the country and continent. Our fight was for mother earth, and it was for our people, our history, and for our future. We have been traveling from city to city connecting with other people, sharing our stories, speaking about the fight for our earth, and conducting know your rights trainings. Many of us are currently in Oakland. We are fundraising to get the clutch on our bus fixed and for a NoDAPL / Copwatch food truck.

Call Goes Out to Defund OPD, Invest in Community

San Francisco Bay Area, 08.06.2017 22:27

Defund OPD writes: The process of allocating Oakland's 2.6 billion dollar budget for 2017-2019 has begun. We believe that the scandal-ridden and dysfunctional Oakland Police Department consumes far too many of our city's resources. It's time to audit police spending and performance, and redirect wasted funds to community-building, constructive strategies for making Oakland a safer and better place to live. The people of Oakland know that policing is the wrong framework for bringing true security to our communities. Oakland's budget needs to reflect our values and our priorities.

The Poverty, Politics and Profit of Section 8 Housing

San Francisco Bay Area, 08.06.2017 22:27

More than 2 million families now use Section 8 vouchers to keep from becoming homeless. It's the government's largest program to help low-income families pay their rent. However Section 8 housing proposals face stiff opposition in cities across the US, including the McKinney and Frisco suburbs of Dallas, Texas. Nicole Humphrey, an opponent, proclaimed, "In this neighborhood, most of us are stay-at-home moms with young kids. The lifestyle that goes with Section 8 is usually working, single moms or people who are struggling to keep their heads above water. It's just not people who are the same class as us."

California May Become First State to Tie Traffic Fines to Income Level

San Francisco Bay Area, 08.06.2017 22:27

A new study released by the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area, Paying More for Being Poor: Bias and Disparity in California's Traffic Court System, shows that Californians pay some of the highest fines and fees in the country - more than three times the national average for running a red light. And new Bay Area data reveals that African-Americans are four to sixteen times more likely to be booked into county jail on a charge related to inability to pay a citation. Two bills before the California Legislature (SB 185 and AB 412) seek to address many of the disparities

Hunger Strike Begins at Folsom State Prison

San Francisco Bay Area, 08.06.2017 22:27

The men at Old Folsom State Prison in the ASU and Ad-Seg will begin a hunger strike on May 25 due to ongoing issues with the conditions of confinement that violate the Eighth Amendment. All the prisoners held in Folsom's ASU and Ad-Seg are without food bowls, therefore having to eat out of ziplock bags. They have no cups, needing to drink water from an old milk carton. They have no TVs, no property at all. The mail is sometimes withheld for no reason - up to a month for some prisoners, for others even longer. All they're asking for is to be given day-to-day necessities. So, in order to have their voices heard, they feel they have no choice but to hunger strike.

Fuck Trump at the Oakland Coliseum

San Francisco Bay Area, 08.06.2017 22:27

From the open-publishing newswire: Don the Con has admitted to obstructing justice, and he should be impeached. We tried to project just that on a billboard next to Oracle Coliseum, after a Warriors game (victory!). IMPEACH didn't fit the sign as well as Fuck Trump. As fireworks went up so did the chant, "Fuck Trump! Fuck Trump!" Security noticed. A policewoman asked us to leave, and we packed up. As we were on our way out, we were surrounded and seized by coliseum security. Some of us were handcuffed. Our projector tripod was broken. The coliseum security did not wear badges and refused to give their names.

80% of Palestinian Detainee Demands Met

San Francisco Bay Area, 08.06.2017 22:27

The hunger striking Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons suspended their hunger strike on May 27 at dawn, after a 20-hour session of talks between the Israeli Prison Authority and imprisoned legislator Marwan Barghouthi and other senior political prisoners. Issa Qaraqe, the head of the Palestinian Detainees' Committee, and Qaddoura Fares, the head of the Palestinian Prisoners' Society, said in a press release that the detainees reached an agreement with the Israeli authorities regarding their demands and officially suspended their strike. "A substantial transformation has been achieved by this strike," Qaraqe declared.

Stay Vigilant, Stay Strong, and Fuck Snitches

San Francisco Bay Area, 08.06.2017 22:27

On May 5, someone presenting themselves as federal informant Andrew Clark Darst tried again to establish communication with organizers he informed against in the lead-up to the 2008 Republican National Convention in St. Paul, MN. Most of the RNC 8 write: We are bewildered, dismayed and angered by the bizarre entitlement of the email. The author, apparently the same person who spent a full year lying to people to gain their trust, all the while sharing all the information he gathered with the FBI, dares to ask us for privacy. He points out that our shining a light on his actions may damage his career options.

The Epic Battle Between Big Oil & the People of California

San Francisco Bay Area, 08.06.2017 22:27

On Thirteenth Street in front of the Sacramento Convention Center where the Democratic Convention was being held on May 20, a group of activists held a mock "tug of war" between the people of California and the oil industry for the loyalty of Governor Jerry Brown. The skit depicted the contradiction between Jerry Brown the "climate leader," who appeals to his Democratic base by preaching against climate change and for green energy, and the other guy, "Big Oil Brown," who supports the expansion of fracking in California and the construction of the Delta Tunnels - and has received millions in contributions from the oil and energy industries.

Sheriff Hart Works with ICE Despite Endorsing SB-54 California Values Act

Santa Cruz, CA, 23.05.2017 22:26

At a meeting between representatives of the Santa Cruz chapter of ACLU of Northern California; Sanctuary Santa Cruz; Peace United Church of Christ and the Public Defender's Office on April 19, Santa Cruz County Sheriff Jim Hart was presented evidence of the ongoing arrangement whereby the Sheriff's Office notifies ICE of release dates of arrested but non-convicted undocumented locals. When confronted with this evidence Hart confirmed the jail policy of cooperation and agreed to consider the information presented to him about other jurisdictions who refused to cooperate with ICE. At a meeting on May 10, however, Hart said that he would not change Santa Cruz County's jail policy.

The Highway Murderers Are A Neo-Nazi Band From Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz, CA, 23.05.2017 22:26

The Highway Murderers are a crypto-fascist rock band from Santa Cruz. Since their formation in 2002, they have constantly been subject to criticism and resistance from the northern California music community for their violent, misogynistic, and racist behavior. The band is generally good at masking their white power and fascist symbols and aesthetics behind the violent imagery that permeates in contemporary metal music scenes. Despite this, members have slipped up and revealed their true colors with social media posts that expose their neo-nazi leanings. The Highway Murderers are scheduled to perform on Saturday, May 27 in San José.

Dr. Maryse Narcisse of Haiti Visits Southern California

LA, 22.05.2017 22:27

Doctor Maryse Narcisse, recent presidential candidate of Haiti's Famni Lavalas party, visited California for her first time in late April. Narcisse's involvement in Famni Lavalas goes back many years. Under President Jean-Bertrand Aristide's second term, she was General Director for the Ministry of Health. She also helped found the Aristide Foundation's medical and nursing school, UNIFA (the University of the Aristide Foundation), which has expanded in recent years.

After the U.S.-backed coup against Aristide and Famni Lavalas in '04, Narcisse represented Aristide during his time in exile (and visited him in South Africa multiple times). She herself was also in exile for a time following the coup. Upon her return to Haiti in 2007, she was kidnapped at gunpoint but survived.

She coordinated medical responses to the cholera outbreak introduced by U.N. troops and the devastating earthquake of 2010 and Hurricane Matthew in 2016. As presidential candidate representing Fanmi Lavalas circa 2016, she enjoyed great popularity.

Video from the recent Montavilla Rally and March.

Portland, 18.05.2017 22:28

The event began with two speeches, both at first extolling the importance of free speech and then complaining how those who oppose their ideology are interfering with theirs. There was a large of amount of that going on, as one can hear on the video.
Much emphasis was put on taking the high road and refusing to interact with counter protesters, further claiming that the other side is afraid to engage in honest debate with them.

https://youtu.be/kIrt_oPkkrc [video link]

Though at first making valid points about the importance of the First Amendment, the first speaker rapidly descended into name calling, personal attacks on opposing ideologies and self righteous Nationalistic flag waving. Communists and Antifa were singled out to the general applause of the crowd.

Some might believe that uploading the content of their speeches is providing them with a platform to spread their mistaken and delusional ideas. This is a valid point, but I believe that their platform is being shaped and polished, slowing learning how to engage the general public with ideas and images that paint them more favorably.

They are beginning to use the violence and all first amendment interference against them to their advantage. This mechanism will be difficult to counteract without people hearing and understanding the threat from what seems like common sense arguments and accusations. [...]

More Money Honey

Portland, 18.05.2017 22:28

rate increases for water and sewage.

Dear Members of the City Council,

On Thursday afternoon about 1400 you will be considering rate increases and we, Individuals For Justice will oppose all three items, 519, 520, and 521.

I am enclosing a statement by a citizen in arms who sees these rate increases as the height of arrogance and we concur with her assessment. We fully expect you to pass these ill-thought out rate increases but will go on record opposing all three so you cannot claim that no one objected. We objected to your ill-thought out move to cover the reservoirs and you spent hundreds of millions of dollars and could have left our water supply alone, due to the EPA being stopped by the mad-man in the WH.

We demand an outside audit before any more of our money is spent on these projects that only help developers and construction corporations.
