Rise of the Amerikan Nazis, Part II: Death of Democracy

Portland, 20.12.2004 01:14

Whether willing or not, the American people have become captives to whatever information is or is not aired by the corporate media. We are unable, for example, to hear any information or news on the debacle in Iraq, with its ceaseless war crimes and mass murders, or on the devastation of both land and man of radioactive depleted uranium, or on the dire threat of global warming, or on the balanced view of the Israeli-Palestinian issue or on dissident points of debate prevalent in this country and, of course, on the ever-widening scandal that is the fraud-riddled election of 2004. We remain, unfortunately, at the mercy of the corporate media, itself in bed with the Amerikan Nazis, unable to inform ourselves of anything detrimental to both government and big business. The sphere of reality, for those who have yet to discover the liberating energy of the Internet, is as limited as those in control of television wish it to be. read more >>

If you care what people think : Poll results from Cornell UniversityYesterday, the communications department at Cornell University released a poll exploring some of the pertinent topics of our times. They studied the effects of "religiosity" against attention to corporate media (which means TV news) and how these factors affect personal opinon of such things as civil liberties and treatment of Muslims.

One point that surprises me is that about half of all those surveyed think it's OK for the gov't to lie to the media. They apparently don't mind being lied to. This surprises me because I strongly dislike being lied to. Especially be the media, and even more so by the government.

read more >>Folks Don't Get It: African-American voter disenfranchisement in the 2004 electionI have noticed something. Since the election all the threads which have raised the issue of Black disenfranchisement -- whether in the context of Ohio this year, Florida in 2000, or generally -- as a form of electoral fraud have ended up devolving into ignorance and/or dying as threads. Specifically, whenever this issue comes up, whether in a diary of its own or in connection with someone else's Onio thread, there appear to be three primary reactions:
 1. A vigorous attempt to insist that systematic disenfranchisement through whatever means is not the same thing electoral fraud, such that the Ohio disenfranchisement is less of a priority right now since it will be fixed "someday"; or
 2. Silence in response to any poster who contends that, whether or not it changes the outcome, the ongoing fight to count all votes in Ohio is a fight to ensure the rights of African-American voters and thus deserves the party's public attention and commitment.
 3. A cry of "tin foil hat" and arguments that nothing is "proven" so it must not be reality -- it's just bad planning, bad administration, in other words, just an unfortunate mistake.

UW Students & Workers Give 'Grinch' Doyle a Lump of Coal

Madison, 19.12.2004 23:41

As Governor Doyle prepares to release his 2005-2007 biennial budget proposal rumored to cut the UW system funding by another 10 percent, the growing coalition of UW students, workers, and community members - with a guest appearance by Santa Claus himself - delived their "Students' Christmas wish list" to the state Capitol on Thursday, December 16. "As the holidays approach, we are asking Gov. Doyle to show some holiday spirit in his upcoming budget proposal that will last beyond the season," said Alison Goetsch, member of the Student Labor Action Coalition (SLAC). "By making students a priority and fully funding education from kindergarten to college, Governor Doyle will be known as a friend of the students of Wisconsin, rather than the Grinch who stole Christmas."

Santa Cruz, CA, 19.12.2004 20:22

Santa Cruz Community Television is offering up more than the usual community dish. Recently, Club Cruz, a locally produced television show, has been used as a platform for virtual infomercials for an extremist group with a record of harassing peace advocates.

The show, produced by Santa Cruz resident Becky Johnson, has featured on several occasions a man named Lee Kaplan, self-proclaimed founder and director of the extreme Zionist group, Dafka.

No Way To Talk About Us: Victim Blaming In Media Coverage of Anti-Queer Hate Crimes

Michigan, 19.12.2004 10:57

“Just someone who hung with a rough crowd and got what was coming.” That’s no way to talk about anyone. Yet this sentence (often a death sentence) connects 20/20’s recent Matthew Shepard coverage, Riviera Rene’s murder, and attempts to kill me in my hometown. In all three situations queer people were blamed for bringing hate and violence on themselves.

Report back from Books to Prisoners Action

Portland, 19.12.2004 01:32

In the tradition of Oakland's Books to Prisoners group, a hand-full of portland books to prisoners members gathered in front of the post office(by PSU) and asked people to mail book packages along with their other mailing items. The response was quite impressive, we managed to get about 25 packages sent this way in 3 hours, and with donation money, we payed for the last 13 packages we needed to ship. If you helped us out today, we thank you very much.

We will inform you of the next time we gather to send more packages.

DETROIT, Mich — The current educational, economic, social and political crisis confronting Detroit is the tip of the iceberg in the structural crisis of the new global capitalism. Major Media Refuses to Focus on the Recount

Portland, 18.12.2004 10:58

Main stream media, for the most part, is refusing to report on the Ohio recount and the emerging reports of voter fraud, disenfranchisement, and suppression. It is an extremely disgusting situation, with literally thousands of people volunteering to count every vote and those brave and wonderfull people protesting in the bitter cold about what happened...

The main press is keeping an eye on the situation, you can be sure of that. They know that you people are out there looking for the truth. And you are getting very close to blowing it wide eye wittness to e-vote manipulation, and a whistle blower of e-vote flip programs.

You are being relied upon to bring the truth out, and you are doing a fantastic job. My sickness caused by the Nov. 2 election is gone because of all of the couragous people taking a stand and working to find the truth.

Parry Center protest at ODS building downtown

Portland, 17.12.2004 21:39

Around 12:15 p.m. today I was attending a pot-luck in my office at the ODS bldg. As we sat down to eat, there was a loud drumming sound that rounded the building. Two of the ladies get up, "Is that a X-Mas Band?" Listening closer, I told them, nah, that's a little too militant for Deck the Halls, actually, that sounds like a protest.

Apparently Curt Gleaves, who works at Foster Pepper Tooze, which is on the 19th floor of ODS, is on the Board of Directors of Trillium Family Services---the parent company of Parry Center. He refuses to deal with the SEIU and supports union busting activities.

They sat on the sidewalk drumming for over 1/2 hour, which freaked out the whole building and the building management and ruined the lunch hour X-Mas tunes on the baby grand in the lobby...sigh.

Almost nothing is known about either company.

Live Report from the Ohio Recount

Portland, 17.12.2004 21:29

there are stunning developments opening up in the Ohio Re-Count currently underway. This is a live report coming to you from Seneca County, Ohio from your intrepid Indy Media Journalist. There are a total of 10 people from Minnesota that we know of here in Ohio, fighting for the principle of democracy. This includes Eli Anthony and Mark Halverson from Minneapolis, Kurt, a lawyer from the twin cities, Burt from St Paul and myself. This is the story of two of the observers, Levi Anthony and myself. The below are the facts and experiences as best as we understand them.

We recieved the call Friday that a number of Republican attempts to stop the re-count had failed and so the recount was on.

Freedom Fighters in Ohio Call for HelpOne of our bloggers sent in this impassioned plea for help from Gary Polvinale, in Sandusky, Ohio. Gary describes how hard people in Ohio are working to make sure that every vote gets counted, and why he's looking for you to write to the media and demand that they start reporting on the growing list of irregularities being uncovered as the recount moves ahead. read more >>
Kerry campaign issues letter to Blackwell demanding investigationSenator Kerry's and Senator Edwards' state counsel for Ohio has issued a letter to Ohio Republican Secretary of State and Bush-Cheney '04 chair Kenneth Blackwell demanding an official investigation into voting machine tampering in Hocking County, RAW STORY has learned. The letter, which was sent Wednesday, also asks that Blackwell require hand counts in any county where machines have been compromised, or have an independent expert inspect the machines. Hocking County elections official Sherole Eaton alleged that a Triad Election Systems representative disabled a machine and tried to plant unverified information into the recount at the House Judiciary Committee's election hearing Monday. read more >>

Portland indymedia reader calls out Counterpunch for its cavalier dismissal of the 2004 sElection Fraud

Portland, 17.12.2004 10:06

Just wanted to point out the difference between the same old, same old election thefts of the past, and the new and improved election theft of the present - worker by worker, machine by machine, precinct by precinct, county by county
one line of code = millions . . . = the entire state

It's an exponentially easier task to do with exponentially less liklihood of ever getting caught at it, regardless of who is at the helm....

I really don't think Alexander Cockburn has put a lot of time into thinking about this. But you can do better. You can look into it, feel it, and see if electronic vote fraud capability really means nothing in comparison to the history of election fraud. This isn't about protecting or saving the Democraps - for me and many other Greens, regardless of Cobb's his crowd's purpose - this is about exposing the awful potential of e-voting fraud.

The statistical studies already show it happened.

Workers Announce Official Opening of the Albany Park Workers' Center

Chicago, 17.12.2004 08:03

logoToday something very important happened in Chicago that the independent media community would be remiss not to include in its list of daily stories. At noon there was a press conference for the official opening of the Albany Park Workers' Center, the first democratically-run workers' center to be opened in the Midwest. And it happened to open right here in Chicago.

[...] Amidst almost constant applause for their efforts, the workers, in partnership with Latino Union, announced the opening of the center. According to Arturo, who began the conference, after 15 long years of having to survive on the corner looking for work, oftentimes in bitter cold, the day laborers would now have a place inside to come to and a place from which to organize within the community. After four years of fighting for a space, today the center became a reality for many who have been without a real voice in the Chicago community for far too long....[Read More]

Report from last night's Portland Inauguration Protest planning meeting

Portland, 17.12.2004 04:45

The day Bush is re-inaugurated will be a sore day in all of our hearts. The domination of corporate globalism has reached its greatest triumph, establishing a throne for the greatest Politico Fool of the Moment who will bow and caper to their interests. Tens of thousands will protest in DC, as they did in 2001, but this time they have seen the evil that this man is capable of being held responsible for. As they have done at WTO, IMF and World Bank protests, as they did in Miami and New York this year, riot police will systematically bait, disorient and brutalize those who dare to stand up for their first amendment rights in the Rome of the 20th century Ceasar's empire. We can't all walk the long road to Rome, but we can get out in the streets at Home, and establish our independence from the corruption that insinuates the political process on the Far Coast. We can carry Bush in effigy to the sacrificial flames of Hell, where he will burn for all of eternity. At the end of the day, when the light begins to fail, we will beat back the darkness and welcome every citizen in the land to join us for impassioned declarations of our autonomy, as citizens of Oregon or Cascadia, or wherever you live in your heart. Where it will all end, no one can really know.

In defense of Rats

Portland, 17.12.2004 04:43

As winter grows near, the green herbs and leafy vines that once covered the bare earth in my garden are dying back to the roots. The ground is more visible now, what was once hidden is naked and exposed. My secret is no longer so safe. I'm just going to be honest about this: there's a colony of rats living in my garden. You can see them now, scurrying on trails cut into the mud, leaping down the mouths of burrows that gape from every corner, no longer hidden beneath the leaves.

Oh, I knew they were there, all right. They've lived there for several years now. I used to watch them through a telescope from my upstairs bedroom, before I realized I could watch them from much closer if I wanted to. I talk to them at night when I wander around the garden. And yes, I even feed them sometimes. They built elaborate tunnels snaking under the tomato patch, through the squash, and in and out of the chicken hut. Every night after the chickens go to bed, the rats tunnel into their coop and gather up the leftover grain. Some are as small as my fist, others are as big as my foot, and none seems to mind my presence. They know who tends the garden and where the grain comes from.
