Victory for McLibel2

Aotearoa, 21.02.2005 01:07

Last Tuesday (15th February) the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg declared that the notorious and long running McLibel case was in breach of the right to a fair trial and right to freedom of expression. The McLibel 2 (Helen Steel & Dave Morris) had launched legal proceedings against the UK government arguing that the marathon 'McLibel trial' which lasted 313 days - the longest trial of any kind in English legal history - and UK libel laws, breached the European Convention on Human Rights Article 6 (right to a fair trial) and Article 10 (right to freedom of expression).

Had I Been White (Mannequin Photog) . Chinatown WDC . Thursday, 17 February 2005

DC, 20.02.2005 22:43

Having observed, over the years, that most mannequins that appear as negroid are actually caucasian mannequins painted black I was pleasantly surprised on Thursday, 17 February, when photographing mannequins in window displays at the new United Colors Benetton in Chinatown that the mannequins actually exhibited asian characteristics and features. Moments later and though not suprised and what I refer as 'that black man suspect syndrome' a security would approach me and insist that I come inside and 'speak with the manager'.

Disneyfication of the Wild - Disney Makes a Move

Portland, 20.02.2005 18:42

We've all known that the 'Disneyfication of the Wild' was coming and so news of it's tentative arrival should surprise no-one. The Walt Disney Company's upcoming forrays onto public lands will just be a tickler. What is described below, however, is likely to be the leading edge of another very fat wedge -- and one that will perfectly compliment the public-lands, pay-to-play, industrial tourism, agenda that Disney helped created through their involvment with the American Recreation Coalition.

Unfortunately, the article from today's Orlando Sentinal gives no background and provides no context. It provides a name, 'Ted Eubanks', but doesn't say anything about what Eubanks has already done, with whom he has beeing working and what is his vision for outdoor recreation on America's public lands. It merely describes Eubanks as "...a Texas-based outdoor and eco-tourism consultant" and such a description would be akin to describing George W. Bush as "... a rancher from Crawford, Texas." www.wildwilderness.org Other Articles on Fee Demo

Portland, 20.02.2005 18:32

The Campaign to Stop Killer Coke has joined with other human rights groups in the "Make TIAA-CREF Ethical Coalition." The coalition urges the pension system to divest of shares in corporations involved in human rights violations, and public health and environmental degradation, and instead invest in socially responsible ventures such as small area housing and businesses.

Please contact TIAA-CREF, one of the largest pension funds, regarding its huge stake in Coca-Cola and the other companies noted below. Your call/email will coincide with other actions aimed at pressuring TIAA-CREF.

TIAA-CREF needs to hear a strong message from you about its holdings in Coca-Cola and other socially irresponsible companies. Call TIAA-CREF CEO Herbert Allison at 800-842-2733 or 212-490-9000. Ask for Mr. Allison's office and ask to speak to his assistant Joanne Mahoney. Calls are best, but otherwise email HAllison@tiaa-cref.org.

Update From Goiania, Brazil

NYC, 20.02.2005 14:27

After the massive police raid on a homeless encampment in Goiania, Brazil on February 16, Indymedia continues to recieve "uncomfirmed reports of murders and extreme police violence, in addition to the reports about the missing bodies."

NYC IMC reporter Brad Will writes about the attack on Feb. 16: "dawn came on confused and quiet – a few milling about – it was the quietest i had ever seen the camp -- so beautiful at dawn with the light low and cool – then the alarm sounded – I could see it wasn’t happening now – people started appearing slowly from all points gathering around a car with a sound system for news – it was plain and simple – 30 trucks on their way all full of military police – all the time the siren didn’t stop ringing." Lantern carnival workshops begin

United Kingdom, 20.02.2005 10:00

Last year's Sharrow Lantern Carnival was a huge success with hundreds of people taking to the streets of Sharrow with some truly amazing lanterns. These are constructed from willow, tissue paper, masking tape, and glue and made by both young and old people alike. The simple construction method, means that with imagination you can build anything you want. The carnival is happening again this year on Sunday, April 3rd and there is lots of chance to get involved in making lanterns with a series of workshops happening before the event. These are open to anyone (you don't have to live in Sharrow) to build lanterns of all shapes and sizes. There will also be the chance to make costumes and instruments for a junk band. Refreshments will be available at each workshop as well as a crèche.

Ingrid Newkirk of PETA Speaks in SF

San Francisco Bay Area, 20.02.2005 05:59

PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is the world's largest animal rights group. Stretching the envelope of compassion further than traditional animal welfare groups that accept human uses of animals, PETA steadfastly advocates for animal liberation from human interference and maintains that animals are not ours to eat, to wear, to experiment on, or to use for entertainment. While they acknowledge there is much work yet to do to reduce the suffering of animals worldwide, PETA takes pride in the large strides they have made toward improving the lot of many animals as the group celebrates its 25-year anniversary this year. PETA's and Ingrid Newkirk's contribution to the animal rights movement has spawned legions of animal advocates and pushed many animal welfare groups to take a more hardline stance against animal exploitation. In support of her new book, "Making Kind Choices", Ingrid Newkirk spoke and signed copies at her only appearance in San Francisco. She strongly encouraged everyone to make full use of all of PETA's copyright-free materials at their website and to request any printed materials they have to offer. From video at PetaTV to CD-ROMs, from pamplets to other materials, PETA offers compelling information on virtually every aspect of the human use of animals and its ethical, health, and environmental ramifications. Brasilien: blutige Rumung von tausenden Familien

Germany, 20.02.2005 03:15

Free Speech TV under Attack in Ashland

Rogue Valley, 19.02.2005 17:16

I just got the letter telling me that AFN techs will be going around installing new line filters, that will eliminate the "above and beyond" channels I've had. My heart sinks a bit, since I will miss a couple of them, like Arts and the Independent Film Channel.

But the one I'm REALLY concerned about -- and the one I'm writing to you about -- is Free Speech TV.

...Free Speech TV brings us Zinn and Chomsky and Roy and Vidal and Palast and Suzuki and the Bioneers and Democracy Now and so many important thinkers and journalists who actually tell the truth, instead of the corporate line.

Take Action Now! Portland Community Gardens Under Threat of Closing

Portland, 19.02.2005 16:58

Many of you may know that after thirty years, the Portland Parks Dept. is considering eliminating the Portland Community Gardens program.

For those of you that work with low-income folks, you may realize that the Gardens provide a wonderful and critical opportunity for those willing to work, to provide a lot of fresh food for their families without relying on food stamps.

For those of you who work in the enviromental sector, you may realize that the Parks Dept. spends hundreds of thousands of dollars annually to water, mow, and spray Portland Public Parks, which are not very ecologically diverse, at all- yet the Community Gardens are maintained by volunteers, and provide an all organic, unsprayed, diverse ecosystem which provides vital habitat for many birds and butterflies.

Oregon is one of the hungriest, poorest states in the nation. Please contact the Portland City Council and Mayor Potter, and let them know that we need the Commmunity Gardens more than ever.

There is a public budget meeting on Portland Parks & Recreation's budget scheduled on Tuesday, March 8, 6:30-8:30pm.

Forest Defense: Biscuit Action Bulletin

Portland, 19.02.2005 16:48

Logging is imminent for the Fiddler timber sale and others part of the ongoing Biscuit salvage-logging project within the Siskiyou National Forest. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals has lifted an injunction that had temporarily prevented timber harvests in these areas...

Fiddler is an LSR (Late Successional Reserve, or in other words, Old Growth) sa(l)vage timber sale spanning an area slightly over 700 acres. Note, that this is only one of seven LSR sales now threatened by this legal decision. Logging is also presently underway in the Briggs Cedar matrix sale.

Here's how you can make connections to get involved and make sure logging doesn't happen:

Oil Trading Exchange Occupied As Kyoto Becomes Law

United Kingdom, 19.02.2005 13:01

On 16 February 2005, the Kyoto Protocol came into effect, legally binding most industrialised countries to greenhouse gas emission reductions by 2012. On the same day 35 Greenpeace activists halted trading on the global oil market by occupying the International Petroleum Exchange in London, and disrupting the trading - there were 27 approx arrests [audio report]. The Kyoto treaty was agreed in 1997, but has since been watered down by special provisions and has been often criticised as being too little, too late, and for promoting potentially damaging practices. Later in the evening more activists blockaded and disrupted the oil industry's most prestigious annual gathering in a Park Lane hotel in London, complete with a banner reading "Climate Change Kills - Oil Industry Parties". There were also actions and events around the world - see global reports and pics. Recently (on 25th January) the Greenpeace Business Lecture itself a target of climate campaigners when the 'Greenwash Guerrillas' from London Rising Tide protested against what they called they Greenwash of Shell's Chairman, Lord Oxburgh [see report and pics]. Burning Planet March to US Embassy On Saturday 12th February, hundreds of people marched to the US Embassy in London as part of the annual Campaign Against Climate Change Kyoto March [see full report and pictures]. Carrying all 141 national flags representing the current signatories to the Kyoto Protocol, together with costumes and bicycle powered sound systems, the march passed by the ExxonMobil offices [see exxonsecrets.org] and the Australian Embassy (Australia is the only major developed country not to have ratified Kyoto apart from the US), before arriving at the US embassy for speeches from many campaigners. There was also a critical mass bicycle protest starting from the Thames Flood Barrier [pics]. The event was also part of an International camapaign that saw events scheduled around the world, including Edinburgh in Scotland. The next big mobilisations on Climate are expected to be at the G8 Summit in Scotland, with the last day of the summit, Friday 8th July, set aside as an International Day of Action Against Climate Change [draft call], and at the 'MOP' climate talks later in November. Reagan's War Criminals Return to Power

NYC, 18.02.2005 23:29

John Negroponte, U.S. Ambassador to Iraq, was nominated by President Bush to be the first Director of National Intelligence, putting him in charge of 15 intelligence agencies. In the 1980s, as Ambassador to Hondruras, Negroponte coordinated U.S. support for right-wing death squads operating in Central America. Last month, military proposals to use death squads in Iraq surfaced.

As well, Elliott Abrams, Reagan administration apologist for right-wing terror in Central America during the eighties, has been appointed Deputy National Security Advisor and "democracy czar." He was indicted on multiple counts of felonies for his role in Iran-Contra, but was pardoned by the first President Bush.
