Englewood parents, students and residents fight to stop closure of schools

Chicago, 28.02.2005 10:15

logobr>On Wednesday February 23, Chicago Public School board approved the closure of three Chicago grade schools and the phasing out of Englewood Technical High School. Within a few hours parents of effected students filed two restraining orders in federal court. This is the first time that federal legal action has been taken to prevent the closing of Chicago schools.

The closures come despite vocal opposition from parents and the communities at two public hearings held earlier, a vibrant protest the day before, and at the monthly CPS Board meeting. Parents and students charged the board has failed to listen to the concerns and demands of the community while making decisions that will have a detrimental impact on the community.

Modesto Police Continue to Harass Anti-Authoritarian Organizers

San Francisco Bay Area, 28.02.2005 09:10

Police have once again harassed members of the DAAA Collective, simply for engaging in free speech, and handing out literature in downtown Modesto. Direct Action Anti-Authoritarians (DAAA), have been under attack from police since conducting Copwatch, and trying to educate the public on their rights while in the downtown area. Police ticked a suspected "leader" of the group, and charged them with "advertising without a permit", although police officers could not identify what the group was advertising. This is the lastest in a long line of harassment against the group by local police. Read report, and what you can do to help here.

Community Internet's Future in Illinois At Stake with 2005 Legislative Fight

Chicago, 28.02.2005 02:26

Get Illinois Online The costs of establishing high-speed internet networks has decreased considerably. And in the wake of a 2004 Supreme Court decision involving municipal rights at the state level, there has arisen a nationwide state-by-state struggle for establishing high-speed community internet at the municipal level.

One main question is: who controls the future of high-speed internet -- municipalities and communities which can work to make the internet an affordable public service, or big telecommunications companies like SBC and Comcast which would redline communities and inflate prices in the name of profit maximization?

That struggle has come to Illinois, with the hopes of averting the fate in fourteen states which have seen Big Telecom shut out municipal internet rights. The Illinois General Assembly will take up the question of Illinois' digital future with a 2005 rewrite of the main state law involving the internet -- The Illinois Telecommunications Act. One bill, Senate Bill 499 which would have killed municipal internet rights, has fortunately been delayed for the moment, though further Illinois anti-muni efforts are likely coming. Read more.

Two attempts in the past year in the tri-cities suburbs of Chicago lost due to Big Telecom lobbying and disinformation campaigns. But successful community internet efforts are nonetheless underway in Urbana-Champaign, Chicago's Lawndale neighborhood, and in all 79 branches of the Chicago Public Library.

Save Tennessee's Mountains and Streams from the National Coal Corporation

Tennessee, 28.02.2005 00:52

Our mountains are the oldest in the world. At over a billion years old, they are living museums. Indeed, because of their location, the Cumberland Mountains were a haven for species fleeing from the glaciers of the last Ice Age and so the forests of the Cumberland Plateau harbor plants and animals that exist nowhere else and thus are windows into the past. The future unfortunately is one of destruction and greed. In clear violation of the law, coal companies have begun to rip the mountains apart to further their own profit and greed and get at the coal beneath.

Border Fence in the News - Stop the Fence!

San Diego, 27.02.2005 00:52

This morning on NPR was I happy to hear another story about the Border Fence. The recent House passage of a bill to exempt the construction of the Border Fence from environmental laws is ridiculous and deserves national attention. Hopefully as people across the country realize the implications of putting fear above environmental preservation they will try to get this bill stopped in the Senate.

Eureka, CA - Maxxam/Pacific Lumber will be allowed to clear-cut more steep hillsides in the blighted Freshwater and Elk River watersheds, the Regional Water board decided Friday. The decision flies in the face of independent scientific data that shows logging by Maxxam/PL is causing permanent damage to the two areas, which are listed as sediment impaired under the Clean Water Act.

Journalists under attack in Indonesia

Aotearoa, 26.02.2005 09:33

Members of the NZ Acheh Support Group were verbally trespassed from the NZ Institute of

International Affairs where the Indonesian Ambassador was due to speak on 'The Recent Presidential Elections and the Future of Democracy in Indonesia.' As the Indonesian Ambassador rose to speak five members of the Group moved to the front of the lecture theatre and unfurled banners and gagged themselves in a silent protest.

The protest was in response to a report in the Jakarta Post on the 7th of February that a proposed draft of the Criminal Code contains up to 49 articles that could threaten press freedom.
