Dahr Jamail: "Live from Baghdad"

Santa Cruz, CA, 03.04.2005 08:01

Dahr Jamail will be speaking at the Veteran's Memorial Building on Saturday, April 9 at 7pm. Tickets available at the door on a $5-$10 sliding scale. Noone turned away for lack of funds. All proceeds will benefit Dahr Jamail's ongoing effort to continue providing independent reports from Iraq.

Weary of the overall failure of the US media to accurately report on the realities of the war in Iraq, Dahr Jamail went there to report on the war himself. One of the few unembedded reporters on the ground in Iraq, his dispatches were quickly recognized as an important media resource for a ground-level view of the war. Dahr spent a total of eight months in occupied Iraq.

Tune into Rockin' the Boat w/ V-Man on FRSC 101.1 FM, Friday, April 8th, from 3-5pm for a live interview with Dahr Jamail.

Part of the April 9th presentation at the Vet's Hall, is a slideshow, including many graphic images. Dahr will also be screening a new film he's put together.

An Evening Spent with Cop Watch In San Jose

San Francisco Bay Area, 03.04.2005 05:30

Cop Watch keeps an eye on police in San Jose, where on Friday nights the popular downtown area is saturated with patrol cars. The patrol cars park in the middle of Santa Clara street surveilling citizens and stopping them for mostly minor infractions. This practice bothers many young and Latino drivers, who feel they are being profiled. Led by an activist called Quetza, the Cop Watch crew spent a couple of hours out on the street April 1 and into the early morning of April 2. Indybay reporter Peter Maiden, who has been covering police issues in San Jose for the last five months, came along to document their efforts.

Cascadian Drought and the loss of prime agricultural land

Portland, 03.04.2005 01:21

Finally, we're getting some moisture in the Inland NW, at least enough to slightly loosen the knot gripping the stomach of anyone who makes a living by putting seeds in the ground. By the end of last month, the driest February on record, area farmers were genuinely panicked. Every conversation with our neighbor, who's been farming the surrounding land for four decades, was about the weather.

No different from usual farmer conversation, I guess. Just more intense. "Never seen anything like it," he'd say over and over.

So even though they spend more time listening to market reports and talk show windbags than climate scientists as they ride around in their tractors and pickups, these guys might be increasingly sensitive to news such as findings from this new study out of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL).

From Portland With Bike Love: Videos about cycling in stumptown uploaded to indytorrents.org

Portland, 03.04.2005 01:21

A collection of short videos made in Portland about bicycles. The films are really creative and varied. If you've been hearing a lot about all of the crazy bicycle stuff in Portland but didn't really know what was going on, this is a good introduction to it. Many of the facets of the Portland alternative bike community are represented here including ZooBomb, Bike Polo, Chunk 666, bike hauling and transportation, and some more creative artistic things (like the bicycle audio project). The collection leaves you with a feeling that you could not only go out and ride a bike but also make a short film about it! read more >>

Tre Arrow's extradition hearing in British Columbia postponed from April to July

Portland, 03.04.2005 01:21

Tre's extradition hearing, initially scheduled for April 2005, has now been postponed until June 27th, 2005. These three days of hearings will decide whether Tre will be extradited to the United States to face a possible life in prison. If the Judge believes that Tre's human rights will be violated in the United States, or that he will not receive a fair trial, the Judge has the right to refuse Tre's extradition. The nature of the case is highly political, and as a result it would be professional suicide for a Judge to disapprove Tre's return to the United States.

If Tre is extradited, he will be facing an onslaught by the FBI, the largest investigations bureau in history. The government is seeking a lengthy trial, potentially lasting for over a year, causing the complete drain of legal funds. They are most certainly attempting to disseminate fear among the public by setting an example of Tre. What is happening to Tre Arrow could conceivably happen to any peaceful defender of the planet and its people. By supporting him in this time of need, we show each other that friends will not be left behind.

"I am innocent of the charges the U.S. government is trying to pin on me. Just as many activists have experienced, I am being targeted by the U.S. government and the FBI, not because I am guilty, but because I have chosen to challenge the status quo."

the Second Coming of Dennis J Kucinich!!!

Rogue Valley, 02.04.2005 21:32

Howdy Peace Fans,

I know I must've mumbled something once or twice about it seeming unlikely that Dennis Kucinich would run for President again in 2008 (and that maybe I'd put my energy behind the superior Clinton?) but Spring is finally here, and the situation may not be so desperate as I had thought.

First of all, I've got my garden rowed, howed, rototilled and rehowed (in a slightly different order, but alas, one which doesn't roll quite so eloquently off the tongue...) and all ready to plant, but then I look out in the woods and see that nature is way ahead of me! There are seven (7!) wild flowers I can already see blooming out my living room window, whereas I just barely got my onion starts in the ground last week!

North Brooklyn Battles Rezoning

NYC, 02.04.2005 14:01

Call it The Wall. A two-mile stretch of prime north Brooklyn real estate developed into a towering row of luxury condominium buildings that range in height from 150 to 350 feet, effectively cutting off the existing Williamsburg and Greenpoint neighborhoods from the East River waterfront. This is the future of the industrial strip of land that hugs the river, as envisioned in a massive rezoning proposal put forth by the Bloomberg administration’s City Planning Commission. Not surprisingly, hordes of opposition to the proposal has been organizing for the past few years, ever since the administration’s plans were made public.

Animal Rights Activist Peter Young is in the San Jose Jail and He Needs Our Support

Santa Cruz, CA, 02.04.2005 10:01

Peter Young was arrested on March 21st in San Jose, CA. He has been "WANTED" since 1998 after being indicted on charges of violating the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act by releasing mink from five Midwestern fur farms.

Peter's support website is up, albeit bare bones, but you can still read updates, find out what he can and cannot receive in jail and most importantly an address to write him at. Peter loves mail and that's all he has right now to keep him connected to the outside. Take 5 minutes to write him a letter. If you can't afford .37 cents for a prisoner, visit SupportPeter.com and email him a letter! No excuses! :) - remember, all letters are read by the authorities.

He's in there for the animals, we need to be out here for him!

FBI Pressures Anarchist Internet Administrator Into Disclosing IP Addresses

Boston, 02.04.2005 07:00

(from the Open Newswire): It's all getting very real. The administrator of flag.blackened.net, a major anarchist internet host, has gone public with a harrowing account of FBI thuggery. According to the report on their discussion forums, two comments were posted to subdomains hosted by the server, including Infoshop.org, which claimed responsibility for "propaganda of the deed." Although the administrator "Dave" is under some kind of government gag order, he did say this: "Both incidents involve topics which are completely out of line for consideration here at flag and really I can only view them in two ways. Either people are simply ignorant about the murderous history of the FBI, or, as is my belief in one case, they are trying to make flag vulnerable to government intrusion."

Workers At UC Berkeley Protest Bad-Faith Negotiations

San Francisco Bay Area, 02.04.2005 06:20

At noon on April 1st 2005 over one hundred labor activists and students gathered in front of UCB's California Hall to protest the UC Regents' bad-faith negotiations with unionized workers on campus.

For years unionized workers at UC have been suffering stagnant wages. In addition, continuous and drastic work force reduction have resulted in an increased workload for rank and file workers. Workers say that this has led to declining quality of education or services in classrooms, libraries, laboratories, dining facilities and administrative offices.

San Francisco to Protest Comcast at National Cable Convention

San Francisco Bay Area, 02.04.2005 03:00

On Sunday, April 3rd, there will be a rally outside of the National Cable Telecommunications Association Convention in San Francisco. The protest will be Sunday, April 3, 2005, at 2:00 p.m., outside of Moscone Center, at the corner of 3rd and Howard Streets, in San Francisco. Flyer
Comcast and other giant cable monopolies control more and more of our media. In addition to cable access, Comcast also controls how many of us access the Internet. They use this power to raise rates and invade customers' privacy, to harass and punish employees who speak up for their rights, and to ignore the demands of the communities where they operate. In the Bay Area alone, Comcast holds over 100 cable franchises, most of which function as monopolies. Comcast has sued San Jose and Walnut Creek, has failed to pay the money it owes to Sacramento, and won’t renew contracts that expired years ago in dozens of other cities. Now Comcast is sponsoring a cable industry convention in San Francisco, a city where cable negotiations are just starting. Communications Workers of America, AFL-CIO, Media Alliance, Global Exchange and Code Pink are calling for people to come out to stop media consolidation, speak up for local communities, and defend workers' rights, as they hold Comcast accountable,

Tinkerbelle, from SF Zoo, Dies at PAWS Sanctuary

San Francisco Bay Area, 01.04.2005 21:20

Animal rights activists worked hard for 9 months to convince the SF Zoo to transfer an Asian elephant named Tinkerbelle to the Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) sanctuary where she would have the space that elephants need to stay healthy. After spending 37 years in a small enclosure at the zoo, Tinkerbelle was moved to the sanctuary on November 28, 2004. At the time, Tinkerbelle was already in very "fragile" condition due to the severe arthritis and foot and joint problems she had developed at the zoo. Activists had hoped the move was not too late. In December of 2004, the SF Board of Supervisors approved a law that contains so many restrictions for keeping elephants that it amounts to a de facto ban on them for the SF Zoo. Unfortunately, on March 24, after only 4 months at the sanctuary, Tinkerbelle collapsed and was subsequently euthanized. Many reacted with sadness to the news as elephants in the wild survive nearly twice as long as those in captivity. Some turned to anger, publicly questioning the care Tinkerbelle received at the sanctuary. Most, though, found solace in the fact that the larger battle to remove elephants permanently from the zoo has been won and there will be no more Tinkerbelles at the SF Zoo.
