Independent Media: Creating the Solution?

Tennessee, 16.05.2005 21:02

When I think about Independent Media, the question of relevancy often arises. Community Media Activists obviously care about what they are doing, but does anyone else care? Does Independent Media make a difference? I went to the panel discussion "Independent Media - Creating the Solution" at the National Conference to Reform the Media this weekend wondering about what they have to say, wanting to know How Does Independent Media Create the Solution? I had just finished a long, hot six hour drive to St. Louis hoping to find some answers.

Anti-racists block neo-Nazi march

Boston, 16.05.2005 21:01

Hundreds of anti-racist protesters came out here May 8 to protest a planned march and rally by the neo-Nazi organization “White Revolution.” This vile group of bigots, based in Arkansas, had intended to hold a rally at the New England Holocaust Memorial to coincide with the annual Holo caust commemoration. The anti-Nazi demonstration was organized on short notice by a number of organizations and community leaders, including Boston City Councilor Chuck Turner; the International Action Center; USWA Local 8751, Boston School Bus Drivers; Bromley Heath workers; Women’s Fightback Network; International Socialist Organization and many others. Chanting “Gay, straight, Black, white—all unite to fight the right” as well as chants against racism, anti-Semitism, Zionism, sexism and LGBT bigotry, the demonstrators held a militant and loud protest in front of Faneuil Hall, adjacent to the memorial. Protesters were Black, Latin@, Asian, Arab, white, young and old. They included a large number of anarchist youth, as well as supporters of the Pales tinian people who made it clear that their opposition to the Israeli occupation of Palestine has nothing in common with the vicious anti-Semitism of the neo-Nazis. When a small group of racists tried to enter the protest area, they were quickly surrounded by angry demonstrators and forced to flee in the back seat of a police car.Memorial to coincide with the annual Holo caust commemoration.

May 12 S.F. Nurses’ Day Protest against Johnson & Johnson

San Francisco Bay Area, 16.05.2005 20:35

Hundreds of Registered Nurses from throughout the Bay Area celebrated the birthday of Florence Nightingale May 12, with a protest rally at the downtown San Francisco office of pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson. Johnson & Johnson was a major contributor to a ballot initiative intended to silence the voices of nurses and other public employees from participating in the political process, a sharp contrast to their much-hyped image as an advocate for nurses.
Last year, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed four bills that would have allowed Californians to buy cheaper prescription drugs from Canada, Johnson and Johnson contributed almost $50,000 to defeat that measure. Now the industry has pledged $10 million to defeat a ballot initiative that would create drug price controls with real teeth. Johnson & Johnson has already donated $1.3 million to the campaign.

Despite Many Reports Confirming Abuse, Newsweek Apologizes For It's Coverage

San Francisco Bay Area, 16.05.2005 20:35

5/16/2005: Protests over US abuses at Guantanamo have spread to Egypt, Sudan, the West Bank and Pakistan and the governments of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and several other Muslim countries filed formal protests with Washington.

Even though there have been many reports of the use of Islam during interrogations at Guantanamo and several reports of the desecration of the Koran, Newsweek's report has taken most of the flak for the recent violence. Strangely Newsweek never had an article or report and it was a several word mention in a box to the side of a related story. The reason for the focus on Newsweek was probably because Pakistani cricket legend turned politician Imran Khan displayed a copy of Newsweek when talking about the incident during a press conference last week. A more likely spark for the protests than an English language magazine was an interview on the BBC Urdu service earlier this month where former Guantanamo inmates reported that some Arab prisoners had still not spoken to their interrogators after three years to protest at the desecration of the Koran by guards at the camp.

Responding to pressure from the White House and Pentagon, Newsweek claims it checked with its source - a senior US official - who confirmed that he had come across references to the mistreatment of the Koran in the results of an US investigation into the mistreatment of prisoners at Guantanamo, but he was no longer certain that they had come from the specific report he had originally named. While Newsweek's official statement was that that it offered its sympathies "to victims of the violence and to the U.S. soldiers caught in its midst", this was taken as an admission that the story was faked by the White House and much of the corporate media.

The head of Pakistan's conservative six-party Islamic alliance, Qazi Hussain Ahmed, told the BBC that Newsweek's clarification held no weight. "There have been reports by the prisoners who have been released from Guantanamo Bay of desecration of the holy Koran, and different atrocities perpetrated on them. Therefore, the clarification of Newsweek has no meaning."

World Leaders Run Out of Control in Oxford

United Kingdom, 16.05.2005 20:24

Leaders of the powerful G8 countries ran wild in Oxford on Saturday, shaking hands, waving and dancing to samba rhythms.

The performance drew cheerful crowds and called for more power to be given to multinational corporations. Oxford residents were warmly invited to join the leaders at their next summit in July near Edinburgh. Vladimir Putin and George Bush cried out for people's support in practical terms, particularly by continuing to "work your boring jobs and do what you're told".

The oligarchal octet and its samba entourage also took in the army recruitment event in Gloucester Green, where the G8 leaders gave thanks for the help of the armed forces in controlling the world and opening new markets for corporate ownership. War was also praised as a great way to keep down the population of poor people, thus helping to reduce world poverty. Omitted were the ways in which military spending contribute to the global economy and create opportunities for governments to invest heavily in technical research while leaving the corporations in control of the final products.

Don't forget to come to the G8 action meeting at OARC (Oxford Action Resource Centre) on Wednesday 18 May, 6pm!

Northeast Antifascists' 4/8/05 Reportback

Boston, 16.05.2005 20:01

About a month and a half ago, Northeast Antifascists noticed an announcement stating that the local “White Revolution” boys and their three friends were planning on coming out to protest an event at the Holocaust memorial in Boston. Unfortunately, seeing this type of thing is not so uncommon. Usually, if they show up at all, it is the same half dozen or so coming to look stupid and pass out a couple flyers. (A couple months ago, some other local fascists tried to meet up in a mall for a rally, and they couldn't even find each other!) We were planning to act accordingly and confront them, but not bother calling for a big turn-out, as the need wasn't there. However, shortly after we starting recieving notice that this whole thing might be a bigger deal than we'd thought. Billy Roper himself was coming all the way from Arkansas, and we figured he might stand a chance of actually bringing more fascists together, seeing as he's one of the only people who can pass himself off as a "leader" in a movement teeming with people yearning for domineering father figures. A week and a half before the action, we duly issued a call to action telling everyone to come and let them know how we feel about nazi trash in our city. The response was huge, and within days, other concerned groups were putting out calls as well. We sent observers to the "Stop the Nazis Now Coalition" meetings, to get a sense of what other people's plans were. Antifascism is a big tent, and we made plans to mostly work around, rather than within or against, this coalition.

May 12 S.F. Nurses’ Day Protest against Johnson & Johnson

San Francisco Bay Area, 16.05.2005 20:00

Hundreds of Registered Nurses from throughout the Bay Area celebrated the birthday of Florence Nightingale May 12, with a protest rally at the downtown San Francisco office of pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson.
May 12th, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, has become the official day to honor nurses nationally, and on that day nurses throughout the Bay Area will hold a protest against the pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson at their downtown San Francisco headquarters.

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors declared May 12th San Francisco Nurses’ Day with a formal proclamation honoring the work of the California Nurses Association (CNA). “National Nurses Day has become trivialized by hospitals, which typically pay tribute to their nurses by giving out free coffee mugs and t-shirts,” said CNA President Deborah Burger, RN. “By honoring the legacy of the original nurse activist, Florence Nightingale, bed side RNs will be protesting the hypocritical policies of Johnson & Johnson.” Johnson & Johnson was a major contributor to a ballot initiative intended to silence the voices of nurses and other public employees from participating in the political process, a sharp contrast to their much-hyped image as an advocate for nurses.

Last year, after Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed four bills that would have allowed Californians to buy cheaper prescription drugs from Canada, Johnson and Johnson contributed almost $50,000 to defeat the measure. Red lights - Please stop running them!

Portland, 16.05.2005 18:21

Most of my city travel is by walking, bus, or bike. In the case of walking and biking I frequently notice the running of red lights by many motor vehicle drivers. Several times lately I have entered a crosswalk with the walk light several seconds after getting the legal signal and had my path crossed by a motor vehicle running the light. The light was not only plainly red, but I was plainly well into the cross walk. (Strangely? it seems that many of the light runners are "law abiding" types in large SUV or pickups, often with patriotic? yellow ribbon stickers. What the fuck does THAT mean?) My daily path includes the full length of Hawthorne from downtown to the end of the street. The worst location is at SE 39th and Hawthorne where you can count on 1 or more incidents per cycle. Close is the end of the bridge at SE Grand and Hawthorne.

Resistance Against New Biotechnology Building at UC Berkeley

San Francisco Bay Area, 16.05.2005 16:00

Ignacio Chapela, the controversial biology professor at UC Berkeley, announces Dreams of Reason, a weeklong event around and about the new biotechnology building being built at University of California Berkeley. In 2001, Chapela and his graduate student David Quist discovered genetic contamination from GMO corn into native maiz species in Oaxaca, Mexico. The organized corporate attack resulted in the denial of tenure to Chapela despite overwhelming support from his colleagues.
During the week of May 16-21, Chapela is inviting the Bay Area community to join him in resisting the corporatization of public education and science.

From the event announcement: "Please receive this message as an invitation to participate in this time of reflection upon the hull of the bioengineering building. In order to make visible a development which has grown mostly out of public view, I invite those who might agree with me that the time has come for Biology either to follow the path of secrecy, big-money and dogmatic thinking, or to imagine itself as a project of diversity and life. Graduate student-workers at UMass-Amherst win tentative contract agreement

Boston, 16.05.2005 02:01

After 14 months of battle, the Graduate Employee Organization, UAW Local 2322 reached a tentative contract agreement with the administration at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst May 10. A ratification vote is scheduled for May 19-20. A heartening and powerful labor-community-student alliance won this stage of the struggle. “The incredible turn out at the March 31 rally and march, the complete shutdown of the university on April 21 because of the undergraduate boycott and GEO walkout, the teach-ins, grade-ins, carol singing and bombarding of Chancellor Lombardi, and many other contract campaign events have all paid off, and allowed us to reach a tentative agreement with the university today over the terms of a new contract,” declared GEO in an email to its approximately 2, 400 members May 10.

On Saturday afternoon, a dry day assisted volunteers working on the foundation for the 7 Corners Temple bench to complete this phase of construction in record time. The reclaimed concrete chunck and used brick mortared foundation was finished with an artistic face of local green basalt and a series of red brick halves, broken by members of the local kung fu school. The bench is one of the dozen or so projects of the upcoming Village Building Convergence.

The foundation was built with the prudent use of only three bags of cement, maximizing the matrix with reclaimed concrete pieces and detritus otherwise destined for the landfill.

Pinksterlanddagen: sport, cultuur, politiek en actie!

Netherlands, 16.05.2005 00:00

Jumpstarting the San Diego Free Press

San Diego, 15.05.2005 20:34

We are restarting the San Diego Free Press after a long vacation in which we were up to our necks in other mediums. There is a ton of news of critical importance happening here in San Diego on a daily basis, and we're going to try to take our media making efforts out of the ether and back into the physical realm. We also plan to have lots of content in the new Free Press en español, since we have been doing serious work on translation for our website. We see the Free Press newspaper as an opportunity to both outreach to people who aren't already involved with movements for social justice and also as a way to reach communities which don't have much access to the internet and computers.

To do this, we need your help with editing, layout, translation, story and art submissions, brain power, donations, moral support, vegan cookies and anything else you want to help with!

Please join us at our next meeting to work on putting this issue together! The meeting will be Tuesday, May 17th at 7:30pm at 2611 Montclair St in South Park.

EcoDefense Benefit report-Back

Portland, 15.05.2005 19:21

I got there around 7 last night, for the Earth First/Cascadia Rising benefit, and I stayed for the rest of the night. There were the inevitable last minute snafus that always happen at these things, coupled with some spectacular saves. All in all, it turned out to be a great time. For what they're worth, here are my observations for those who could not be there.

First, Rolf Rocks! I finally got to see one of his famous slide shows, and I learned a lot about the Siskiyou forests, and about forests in general. I confess to be one of those people who did not understand the importance of fire in the forest ecosystem. Now, I do. The whole thing was really inspiring, and makes me want to get on a bus and go to the forests. (And apparently I will have the opportunity to do that, because Joe Keating stood up later and announced that there will be a bus and an opportunity to get on it in June.) If you would like to see this incredible slideshow for yourself, along with some awesome videos, he's going to be doing it all again at People's this [Sunday] evening.

Remember Nakba Day

DC, 15.05.2005 16:01

In DC, Nakba day is being commemorated with a music concert and an educational program. This annual observation is important because it marks the expulsion of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from their homes in 1947-48. Concert for a Free Palestine, Sunday, May 15, 2005 4:00pm, Lutheran Church of the Reformation, 212 East Capitol Street SE
