Lockdown at the State Capital: Tenncare Enrollees Locked into the Governor's Office

Tennessee, 25.06.2005 22:03

As the doors closed on the Governor's Office Friday afternoon there was a sense of accomplishment in the faces of Tenncare Enrollees who had occupied the Governor's Office for the entire week, demanding a meeting with the Governor and an immediate end to the termination of health insurance letters being sent out to hundreds of thousands of poor and uninsurable Tennesseans. This was the first time in sixty years that the State Capital has been occupied. The Enrollees were informed by the State Police that if they chose to stay in the Governor's Office over the weekend, they would be locked in with no access to the outside world. If they chose to leave they could, but ten decided to stay the weekend, bringing in what food and water they could. Don DeVaul, a Tenncare Enrollee, on Tenncare Standard Uninsurable, will be cut. He said he was going to stay the weekend, "There is going to be ten staying over the weekend but we will lose one or two. I will be here for the entire weekend with that foot in the door. We are going to have a presence here and in Washington DC. All the people staying here are Tenncare Enrollees."

California Rivers Threatened By Diversions, Hydropower Projects and AgriBusiness

San Francisco Bay Area, 25.06.2005 19:00

Three of the West Coast’s major river systems – the Columbia, Klamath and Central Valley (Sacramento, San Joaquin) are under threat. In 1992, Congress recognized the shortage to the Bay and Delta and voted in the Central Valley Project Improvement Act (CVPIA) to provide the Federal share of that amount by allocating an additional 800,000 acre-feet of yield from the Central Valley Project for fish and wildlife. Unfortunately, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, charged with implementing the CVPIA, subscribes to a culture that worships dams and views water diversions as a holy sacrament. Read More - 1 | 2 | 3

Meanwhile, in the northeastern corner of California, the beautiful, majestic South Fork of the Pit River located in Modoc County, is endangered due to California's grab for land and the water rights that go along with it. Many ranchers have sold out and large corporate ranching operations have purchased the small ranches, including Alturas Ranches, owned by multimillionaire Silicon Valley Land Developer, Barry Swenson, members of his family, various partners of his and the Green Valley Corporation. As a result, they hold an almost sixty percent control of the South Fork Irrigation District (SFID) a public entity, and a controlling share of the water rights of the South Fork of the Pit River. Protesters follow the Gubernator everywhere he goes

San Francisco Bay Area, 25.06.2005 15:00

A “Dog Arnold” protest was held outside the KMJ studios in Fresno on June 24, 2005. The governator was talking on the Ray Appleton show.Photos

A small but vociferous crowd staged another protest against California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger at the Stanford Park Hotel in Menlo Park, Wednesday, June 22. Incensed by his abuse of the special election law, designed to provide for emergencies, the voters will probably continue to attend every public event until he is forced out of office, to express their anger.
Among those protesting were firefighters upset at the continuous closing of fire houses in California. Arnold also he says he wants to eliminate death benefits for families of first responders who die in the line of duty.

The means are the end... - G8 bike ride going well

Scotland, 25.06.2005 13:04

The G8 Cycling Caravan left on the 19th of june from London and has now arrived in Nottingham.
Circa seventy cyclists started the tour, with more to join on the way. After their arrival in Scotland on the 29th of June, a majority of the group is set to arrive on 1st of July in Edinburgh, in time for the "Make Poverty History" mass demonstration.
Other collective transport is organised for a Train by the South East Assembly. Warnings of Vans being stopped and the driver being harassed by Strathclyde Police have also been reported. But the most exciting transport tip so far still remains Bob Geldof's "Armada" fleet.

UNEARTHING RICHMOND'S SLAVE HISTORY

Richmond, 25.06.2005 13:03

Archaeological Survey Planned for Lumpkin's Jail Site Shockoe Bottom, the historic valley where Richmond began, soon will be home to an important archaeological project expected to uncover valuable clues about Richmond's past. Late this summer, The City of Richmond, in partnership with The Richmond Slave Trail Commission, The Virginia Department of Historic Resources (DHR), and the Alliance to Conserve Old Richmond Neighborhoods (A.C.O.R.N), will sponsor an archaeological survey of the site that was once Lumpkin's Jail, the largest and best-known slave pen and boarding house for slave traders in antebellum Richmond. After the Civil War, Lumpkin's Jail became a school for newly freed blacks-the forerunner of the institution known today as Virginia Union University. To be undertaken on City-owned land in Shockoe Bottom, the archaeological survey is intended to determine the presence or absence of intact cultural remains associated with Lumpkin's Jail and whether further archaeological study is warranted.

Ward Churchill Speaks

Portland, 25.06.2005 13:02

Ward Churchil spoke at the Mississippi Ballroom last night, 06-23-2005 ostensibly about military recruitment, military action in Iraq and movement(s) against it. He spoke for about an hour and then took questions. This was a decent talk, but I felt like the previous one at Reed College was a little more informative, but this one was more informal and open. Still there are a few good tidbits that Churchil drops here and there. Listen to the stream HERE . Download the file at IndyTorrents .

Review: Batman Shrugged

Boston, 25.06.2005 13:02

What if Ayn Rand and Mussolini got together to write a Hollywood movie? The result would look something very like Batman Begins--the new blockbuster prequel to the Batman screen franchise. Now, admittedly, the Batman worldview--be it in comic, graphic novel, or movie form--has never been very progressive. But its timeless noir myth about a good-but-flawed man fighting for his own kind of justice in a cruel world has resonated with people across the political spectrum for decades now. Because it's hard to argue that there aren't nasty criminals, bad cops and corrupt politicians out there in dire need of some comeupance. And I'm sure it was refreshing back in the 1930s when the original comic series was launched to see a hero comfortable enough with his sexuality to fight crime in a tight-fitting bat suit. Still this latest Batman film outing leaves much to be desired--despite the many promising innovations that have steered the movie series away from the fantastical and towards the more recognizable, but still properly archetypal, settings and plot devices that clearly relate to viewers everyday lives. Director Christopher Nolan, famed for the 2001 cult hit, Memento, actually made realism his mantra for the movie--according to interviews on the Batman Begins website. For example, aside from a futuristic monorail system and a Dickensian paupers' quarter ("The Narrows"), Batman's hometown, Gotham, looks pretty much like any modern metropolis. It's also worth noting that, surprisingly, there was not a single recognizable "product shot" in entire film. Not a Coke (or Nokia, or Lexus) logo in sight.

Update: Shell Truck Blockade Continues

Ireland, 25.06.2005 13:01

Report at 80 hours vigil and counting... The Shell To Sea Protesters are asking people to come out! The scenario is this is a very narrow road, not passable by both village traffic and the 60 to 70 trucks the developers want to bring on it everyday. So there isn’t so much a blockade as there is parking. This has gone on since Tuesday at 3pm…over 72 hours and counting of continual vigil. As a result of the actions of local residents and their supporters most transport to the Shell compound at Rossport has ceased. At mid-day today (June 24th) some Shell and associates top brass started poking around, and seeing that the numbers of residents and their supporters had thinned they attempted to make their move. By 2pm today, Friday, a flurry of Shell henchmen was at the scene waving the High Court Injunction order they had got in Dublin that morning. This named Willie Corduff, Vincent McGrath, Philip McGrath and enjoined them, and anyone acting in concert with them, from “interfering” with traffic. However the only obstruction to traffic is from the contractors hired by Shell, normal traffic can transit the road with little difficulty. At the moment any obstruction is from the now very stationary lorry which was bringing pipes to the Shell compound. At around 3.30pm Garda were called and served the injunction, reading it out to the assembled crowd of around 30 people, who were unimpressed at the law not being applied to the developers, while local residents are tried in absentia in Dublin. The police were told straight out they would have to cart people off the road in wagons, that they would have to arrest everyone in sight. The legal situation with lorry, which is unlicensed to carry materials, was pointed out to them, but they said that it could be driven off and that the new driver had ten days to produce the necessary documentation. Mostly the Garda just pleaded that they had orders from the High Court, the highest court in the land and so on… Negotiations began, the three-way debate ended inconclusively as Coffey, on behalf of Shell and co., didn’t have the power to organise a full scale public meeting open to all the people who use the road, rather his brief was, he claimed, only to organise a meeting of 3 Shell reps and 3 local residents, moreover he aimed to restrict participation to the owners of the land where the pipeline is planned to go. Frustrated the Garda left, and, according to what is by now legend, worked out their stress issues by pulling over some Eastern European migrants for having no tax and insurance. Shell-Statoil-Roadbridge-Sicim then attempted an abortive move of the lorry, unsuccessful in this, they then tried parking it further off the road, in order that the road be passable for their other lorries. Not the smartest of moves as this then got the truck bogged down. So the main-contractor successfully sabotaged the sub-contractors machinery, one would say – only in Ireland, but as there are Italians, Germans, Englishmen, Norwegians, Americans etc… with a slice of the development cake here perhaps such happens everywhere, but it is sure a new one on me. The mood here is very positive and has been the last few days, there was a bit of a party last night with the bonfire for St.John’s Eve, with the Wolfe Tones making a change from some radio station that only seems to play country. Volunteers are needed and welcome to travel up and join the struggle, see the Shell To Sea contacts page here: The Shell To Sea Protesters are asking people to come out! Call-in Report from the frontlines.... [ please excuse the brevity and quick writing - I hope I got this all correct, hard to hear on the phone ] About 30 protestors are still on the same road ( read: http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=70411 ) An injunction was served on: william Corduff vincent McGrath Philip McGrath and 'all agents and any acting in concert' 3 Gards are now at the scene. Gardai have been told the shell vehicle is illegally parked. And trying to get everyone to move their vehicles from left side of road. -- Yesterday a bus of 'important people' was blockaded 15-20 mins They left and got on other bus It is now thought that those VIPs were shareholders There will be a Shell COrp AGM next week next Monday or Tuesday in Holland. There will be protests held there. -- The crew in Mayo is asking for people to come out to support and be involved. click on 'contact us' at http://ShellToSea.com for more info http://www.indymedia.ie/attachments/jun2005/p1020075.jpg

6/26 Town Hall Meeting to Plan SF Fare Strike Against MUNI

San Francisco Bay Area, 24.06.2005 15:20

MUNI Social Strike is calling for a Sunday, June 26th Town Hall meeting to discuss strategy and logistics for a city-wide fare strike against San Francisco's MUNI, which plans to raise fares from $1.25 to $1.50. They plan to discuss the potential for a Bay Area-wide transit strike, involving AC Transit, SamTrans and BART employees, together with MUNI riders and drivers. MUNI bureaucrats want to raise fares, cut service, and fire MUNI operators. But large-scale on-the-job action, where MUNI drivers and riders act together, can stop management's attacks on working people. As part of their effort to bring drivers and riders of public transit together against management, MUNI Social Strike organizers have invited MUNI drivers, as well as BART and AC Transit operators. The Town Hall will take place on Sunday June 26th from 7pm to 10 pm, at Cellspace, 2050 Bryant Street (cross street 18th) in San Francisco's Mission District. Read more

Zapatistas on "Red Alert" in Chiapas

San Francisco Bay Area, 24.06.2005 15:20

Perhaps in response to the mobilization of 70,000 Mexican army troops in Chiapas, the EZLN has gone on "red alert" and Zapatista governments are now operating clandestinely. The Mexican Secretary of Defense recently attempted to claim that Zapatistas were involved in narco cultivation and trafficking, but it has since come to light that the towns where marijuana plants were allegedly found are not under rebel control; on the other hand previous Mexican administrations have been caught 12 times attempting to plant contraband drugs in Zapatista territory. A June 20th Zapatista communique stated that the centers of Good Government throughout Chiapas had been closed because all Zapatistas have been called to a consultation about what steps to take. Do reflector sunglasses and a Walkman make you invisible?

Big Muddy, 24.06.2005 15:20

Emilio Paranadiz lived in Miami Florida, currently. He was happy and enjoyed burritos while watching Julio panhandle the off ramp. That was yesterday. Now Julio was gone and things were just not right. They had split the funds that Julio had obtained. Julio really loved to panhandle, especially when someone who could appreciate his technique watched. Emilio truly appreciated Julio’s ability to conclude a potential donor’s most available avenue of donation. It could be a simple “could you please give a fellow a hand” to a woeful story of misery, degradation and desperation. But, Julio always knew which line would reel in the pocket change. Emilio knew that the truth was on television. He had proof from the Talking Heads. They sang “Television Man” and there was the evidence. It was hidden but it was definitely there. It might also be on radio, but of that he was not sure. He learned this through great introspection and because television almost enveloped him. It was true, he could almost become one with television. On those rare occasions, his awareness was such that he was within and outside the television set. He learned much from television. He discovered that action was rational and that it established existence. He also knew that self-image is image. How was this to help him on his quest to find Julio? For you see, Julio had left that afternoon and not returned, as he had said he would.

Privatised Water Supply In Blanchardstown Development Contaminated

Ireland, 24.06.2005 13:30

'Alert issued' sez Wag 'Next time the tankers come they could be charging for the uisce' Thousands of homes in the blanardstown area have suffered serious water contamination. The water supply is under the control of a private company established by the property developers. Thousands of homes in Tyrrelstown, a new development in the Blanchardstown area, have been affected by a biological contamination to their water supply. The water supply is under the control of a private company established by the property developers. Fingal County Council have had to bail out the private management company responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the water system. A report in the Northside People claimed children's skin had suffered a reaction when they washed. Residents claimed when they contacted Fingal County Council they were passed onto the management company. Private water management companies are not regulated in Ireland. So there you have it, water being privatised through the back door, without legislation or regulation. Follow Feature Continued Link Below For Council Notices On This IssueCouncil Notices: News Update Tyrrelstown Public Water Supply Alert - UPDATE 5PM FRIDAY 17TH JUN Following disruption to water services last weekend, Fingal County Council Water Services Department took full control of the water supply in the Tyrrelstown area on Wednesday 15th June to ensure that a localised source of contamination identified through routine water sampling was precisely identified and rectified. In order for this to be carried out water supplies have been discontinued for a 24 hour-period between the hours of 10 p.m. on Thursday 16th and 10 p.m. on Friday 17th June. Residents have been advised that once the supply has been restored, the water will not be fit for drinking until a further notice has issued from Fingal County Council. Initial investigations carried out on site today involved the emptying of both on-site reservoirs for a full and detailed inspection. This included a full inspection of all associated water supply infrastructure. A precautionary disinfection was also carried out in both reservoirs. While our investigations are ongoing, indications of reduced through-flow in one of two on-site reservoirs suggested that this may have contributed to the contamination of the supply. The decision was taken to remove this reservoir from the supply network as the remaining reservoir provided adequate capacity to supply water to the area. Further engineering works were carried out on site to ensure any further potential vulnerability in the system was avoided. Once these works have been completed water supplies will be restored to the Tyrrelstown area by the expected time of 10pm this evening. Following restoration of water supplies in the area residents are advised that precautions should be followed as outlined below. Water quality sampling will be carried out by Fingal County Council throughout the weekend and into next week to ensure that suitable quality is restored to the area in accordance with standard safe practice. A Town Hall meeting for SF Social Strike

San Francisco Bay Area, 24.06.2005 13:30

The MUNI fare increase, service cuts and driver layoffs has spawned the creation of a San Francisco Muni Social Strike. Organizers of the Social Strike are inviting the community to a Town Hall Meeting this Sunday, June 26th to discuss strategy and logistics for a city-wide fare strike against San Francisco's MUNI.

From the Social Strike organizers: "We also want to discuss the potential for a Bay Area-wide transit strike, involving AC Transit, SamTrans and BART employees, together with MUNI riders and drivers. We want to get the word out throughout the city for this with postering, leafleting and bus stop organizing. This is an effort to bring both drivers and riders of public transit to work together, and therefore we have invited MUNI drivers, as well as BART and AC Transit operators." They refer to recent Italian fare strikes as a model for organizing.

Borders at the G8

United Kingdom, 24.06.2005 12:25

p> G8 countries spearhead the world system of borders; a system which renders many people illegal and which leaves all of us divided. Restrictions on our movement, restrictions on our right to work, restrictions on our right to receive medical treatment or legal aid or any other social benefit are all standard. What's more these restrictions are largely based on the arbitrary notion of nationality and on its ugly twin: race.

The Istanbul session of the Tribunal will consist of three days of hearings investigating various issues related to the war on Iraq, such as the legality of the war, the role of the United Nations, war crimes and the role of the media, as well as the destruction of the cultural sites and the environment. The session in Istanbul is the culminating session of commissions of inquiry and hearings held around the world over the past two years. 6/26 Town Hall Meeting to Plan SF Fare Strike Against MUNI

San Francisco Bay Area, 24.06.2005 06:30

Read more

Day Four of Kendra James civil trial; The defense starts its case

Portland, 24.06.2005 06:20

First witness was Dr. Cliff Nelson who performed the autopsy on Kendra. He basically described the same bullet path as did Dr. Brady yesterday except that he claimed that the video re-enactment by Officer Scott McCollister would be consistent with the path. The video shows McCollister with one foot in the car, knee on edge of driver's seat and upper body leaning into car. His right arm is bent 45 degrees at the elbow, approx. 6 inches from his upper torso. Dr. Nelson stated the bullet path was consistent with this video even though he drew a line from an imagined gun barrel at the end of McCollister's right hand that went up and over where the defense claims Kendra was positioned, and would have exited out the passenger side front window.

Next came Officer Kenneth Reynolds, 28 years old who admitted he is close friends with McCollister. They do dinner every Tuesday nite with their wives and friends. Reynolds story of how he stood next to and slightly behind McCollister did not hold up too well during cross examination by Attorney Grimes for the plaintiff.

recent New York Times editorial an excellent example of propaganda

Portland, 24.06.2005 06:01

David Brooks recent New York Times editorial makes use of many common tricks.

"There's a reason George Washington didn't take a poll at Valley Forge. There are times in the course of war when the outcome is simply unknowable. Victory is clearly not imminent, yet people haven't really thought through the consequences of defeat. Everybody just wants the miserable present to go away."

(George Washingon would be for the war and you would too if you were a deep thinker like George Bush. George Bush = George Washington)

"We're at one of those moments in the war against the insurgency in Iraq. The polls show rising disenchantment with the war. Sixty percent of Americans say they want to withdraw some or all troops."

(If weenies like you were at Valley Forge, we won't have a country. Don't you feel ashamed and want to get in line? Valley Forge = Iraq)

AUDIO FILE: Iraqi Labor Tour 2005

Portland, 24.06.2005 06:01

Wednesday evening, on June 22, 2005 at Portland State University, at least 450 Portlanders had the rare opportunity to hear from two courageous Iraqi labor union leaders who struggled for years under Sadaam Hussein's repression and who have now stepped forward to organize workers under difficult circumstances of violence and occupation.

Both men would end the occupation immediately and state that the Iraqi people are perfectly capable of organizing and sustaining themselves, without U.S intervention. They do believe that they are better off without Sadaam, yet believe that the war was actually a war for oil and that under the current occupation, the people have no real power to determine their own fate. Hassan Juma'a Awad Al Asade stated that "we know that one of the main reasons for the invasion of Iraq was to control the oil resources in the Middle East, and because Iraq owns certain oil reserves in the world."

Fighting for our Rights!

San Francisco Bay Area, 24.06.2005 05:20

6/23/2005:People of Color spoke out today against the Fresno Police Department's Violation of their Civil Rights. At a press conference held in front of the Fresno Federal Courthouse, the Rev. Floyd Harris, California president of the National Action Network said that some Fresno Police Officers are engaged in racially discriminatory treatment of African Americans, Hispanic Americans and Asian Americans, harassing and abusing their authority under color of law; conducting race-based traffic stops; failing to adequately investigate and monitor discrimination complaints filed by citizens, and using excessive force. A press statement said “We believe that the City of Fresno is discriminating against our communities by failing to continue to provide assurances to our children, families and working poor that they can live in a society free of hate, fear and greed.”

Gloria Hernandez of the Coalition for Immigrant Rights invited the community to an all day meeting on Saturday where participants will learn how to defend their rights when confronted by the police. Go HERE for information about that meeting.
